To think that everyone is getting far too excited about this Green win?

All this fuss about one Green win - I really don't think it's massively significant given the local demographic and the upcoming local elections will be the real test.

As if the Greens are going to get anywhere near power! Not going to happen.

Why wont they, have you a crystal ball?

Voters are going to have 5 parties to chose from at the next GE... according to current polling.
So the Greens could well be part of a coalition.

Voter turn out in council elections is very low, around 35%, so not really an indication.

The real story from G&D is the total collapse of the Tories and Reform failing to win, miles behind the Greens.

The combined vote of left leaning parties, totally wiped out the 'right.

BlusteryLake · 28/02/2026 07:26

I don't think anyone is expecting the Greens to win a swathe of other constituencies are they? It's significant because a minority party has ousted a Labour candidate in a previously safe seat, and another minority party came second. The question raised is, might we see a shift from the long-running two party stronghold on votes. I don't think the noise is specifically about the greens.

Westfacing · 28/02/2026 07:26

They are unlikely to get into power but they will give Labour a very bloody nose over the coming years, and at the next GE.

They will split the left/liberal vote and that will benefit Reform.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 28/02/2026 07:28

It's not about the Greens winning as such, no one is saying they are going to be the next Government - it's more a heartening story about people voting against Reform and their dangerous form of politics.

Dragonscaledaisy · 28/02/2026 07:29

The real significance is Labour losing an extremely safe seat and not only coming second, but third. That's catastrophic for a party already in crisis with no leadership.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 28/02/2026 07:34

Why wont they, have you a crystal ball?

Because they are as mad as a box of frogs (and by the way they have completely forgotten about the frogs at this point).

You also quoted my OP right after the OP. Why would you do that? 🤣

I agree, yet listening to the media, you wouldn't realise this.

Tories and Restore will split the nasty fuckwit Reform vote.

If only, but I'm not sure that Lowe's party will amount to much even with the supposed backing of Musk.

They did a shockingly poor job in Brighton.

People are so blinded by reform they just cannot see how dangerous this "new " green party is.

No i disagree, Labour still got 10k votes and still command a v large majority in the commons.

Badenoch was supposed to herald a new beginning for the Tories after their worst defeat ever in 2024, yet they got just 706 votes, again, their worst by election defeat ever and vote share lower than in 2024.

No-one expected them to win but the loss was catastrophic for her.

DonnaBanana · 28/02/2026 07:47

I think it is actually the perfect result for Reform. By not winning they avoid a strong anti Reform reaction and it invigorates their supporters to push even harder next time. Also notice how the left vote was diluted into Green and Labour but the Tories didn’t even get their deposit back. The greens eating into Labour could hand a GE to Reform.

It was a complete collapse of the vote for Labour and to try and claim otherwise is laughable. It's this kind of mentality that's led to the situation the Labour party is currently in.

Tbf to Kemi, it's still too soon.

I think the best thing to come out of it is for people, especially in the government, to realise that there are plenty of voters out there who support more progressive politics, rather than everyone trying to just win over those on the very right of the spectrum.

PersephoneParlormaid · 28/02/2026 07:56

I don’t see it as a victory for the greens, more a two fingers up from the voters to the other parties.

We are moving to a situation where large numbers of people support both further left and right parties and the centre risks crumbling away.

Personally I'd rather have the dull centrists back.

HagsRule · 28/02/2026 07:59

I'm not excited the Greens are absolutely mental. The Scottish greens are even worse I think than the English greens, but generally they are not a party I would be happy in control. See the lunacy of the Bristol green candidates as examples.

Not sure the New Greens form of politics can be described as "progressive". Sectarian politics is a regressive step, surely.

Anyway eventually they must be found out. Their policies of legalising drugs and prostitution is contradictory with the religious views of the Muslim vote on which they rely. Im not sure all the voters knew what they were voting for...

The Conservatives would never have featured strongly in this particular seat though. It has always been a safe Labour seat.

EasternStandard · 28/02/2026 08:02

It’s good to see Labour lose votes, especially for such a safe seat as pp says, but yes it’s the local elections that are the bigger test for them.

Or even knew they were voting.

TsunamiTsunami · 28/02/2026 08:06

I have only seen what has been in the news, but the new Green MP does seem pretty good. I have always voted Labour in general elections, but I do think they are so unpopular now (rightly so - they have massively fucked up). I struggle with all the main parties now and it doesn't surprise me that people are casting their votes elsewhere. I am more concerned about Reform than I am pleased about the Greens. I also don't like some of the Greens' policies and I really dislike Polanski.

But of a waffle sorry, but TL:DR, YANBU

Wakethefuckup · 28/02/2026 08:04

😆Very true. The Greens are going to have to reconcile relying on the votes of women who didn't know they were voting because men were voting for them, with their left wing progressive (ahem) views. This seems to happen a lot these days with left wing parties. But they seem to justify it to themselves somehow.
