To think that everyone is getting far too excited about this Green win?

All this fuss about one Green win - I really don't think it's massively significant given the local demographic and the upcoming local elections will be the real test.

As if the Greens are going to get anywhere near power! Not going to happen.

Ratings mean nothing if you are comprehensively rejected at the ballot box, and the Tories are much more ready to reject their leaders than Labour are.

We’ll see. Starmer was worried enough about his own career to keep Burnham out and now he’s got his own G&D ballot box rejection.

Losing 13,000 and a 100 year seat is going to bite even if some prefer to focus on Kemi still.

SaulJunction · 28/02/2026 09:33

Will be interesting to see if Kemi's ratings keep going up now the Tory's are such a nothing that they didn't even get their deposit back.

Their traditional voter base continue to die off. About a third of a million elderly people die each year. Over 1.5 million older people by the next election. Whilst the rest of us get older knowing what a debacle the last Tory government was and what a state they left the country in.

Kemi is the caretaker. The Tories always put a woman in when they know there's trouble that will stick to someone and no chance of winning. She'll be replaced with a nice shiny faced public school boy the moment they see a glint of power in the distance again......if they ever do.

dancingredshoes · 28/02/2026 09:18

@Dragonscaledaisy a heartening story for those who support Palestine, deny Hamas and deny the atrocities of 7th October, the atrocities in Iran/Sudan etc etc! If she’d won on the basis of local issues I’d find it heartening. Seeing her come out and frame it as a win for normal people when the party mainly used pro Palestine to get votes (from all demographics) is just a bit ridiculous!

I don't disagree with you on any of those points.

Westfacing · 28/02/2026 09:33

ilovesooty · 28/02/2026 09:20

I suspect the Tories will dispose of her long before the next general election.

I think they won't - who would replace her for a start?

A bit like Labour and Starmer - they're stuck with her

daisychain01 · 28/02/2026 09:34

What made me laugh was Farage getting riled by the Green win, and quoting his mate Trump that the Greens only won because they cheated their way to victory.

🍇<<<<< sour grapes 😂

The Conservatives were never going to do well in that constituency. And its definitely too soon for people to forgive them. But that will fade with time and in comparison with the current government. So things will perk up. I like Kemi. She's straightforward and honest which is a novelty in politics.

She’s great. If you are a Labour voter it’s not going to be your choice. She gets support, not on mn of course but that’s just the usual.

If Starmer was so certain he was safe he’d have let Burnham stand.

But the independent Electoral Commission observers said there was a huge amount of cheating. So he's only stating facts?

This is sexist. No wonder Labour only have male leaders. Branch out. She’s doing better than the men.

Firry · 28/02/2026 09:39

What relevance is Palestine to
the people of the UK who are struggling under high utility / food / housing / tax costs, stagnant wages, terrible health care and poor job prospects for the young?

Some people who emigrated here have their heart still in Muslim homelands and therefore their main concerns lie outwith the UK. The Green Party have recognised this, recognised that these people have a vote still and have messaged accordingly.

Thats why some people are concerned. The issues winning elections aren’t those of concern to many.

genesis92 · 28/02/2026 09:39

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 28/02/2026 07:28

It's not about the Greens winning as such, no one is saying they are going to be the next Government - it's more a heartening story about people voting against Reform and their dangerous form of politics.

It’s not really a vote against Reform though is it. This is one of the most left wing seats in the whole country. For it to have swung to Reform would have been miraculous.

However, the fact they still came second, despite ultra left wing and ethnically diverse seat, probably gives an indication of what’s going to happen in other seats.

Alpacajigsaw · 28/02/2026 09:40

Let’s hope not anyway. Given they think any random man is a woman as long as he says he is, they’d be as bad for women’s rights and Reform’s proposed repeal of the Equality Act. Plus some of their politicians in Scotland are just appalling

Pineneedlesincarpet · 28/02/2026 09:42

SaulJunction · 28/02/2026 09:26

I've just looked up 'sectarian'.

"narrow-minded, often rigid, adherence to a specific religious, political, or social group, frequently fostering prejudice, discrimination, or intense conflict with other groups".

That sums up Reform and Restore doesn't it.

Not that ive noticed. What policies of Reform are sectarian? As far as I can see they are just standing up for UK citizens. Which are the people they should logically be standing up for, being in the UK? No need to stand up for people who live elsewhere like tbe Greens do.

I admit knowing nowt about Restore. They arent exactly an electoral force so I wouldnt worry about them too much.

Bertiebiscuit · 28/02/2026 09:46

I hope you are right, what on earth would happen if this monster raving loony party actually got into power, heaven help us.

Violetparis · 28/02/2026 09:46

ApplebyArrows · 28/02/2026 09:19

UKIP and now Reform have been very good at getting media attention. The Greens are in the news far less even when doing comparably well.

Hopefully now there will be more media scrutiny on the Greens especially on why they believe women shouldn't have single sex spaces.

If it's sexist then it's the Tories sexism.

Thinking of how Truss and May were left to take the fall and then a nice Eton/Winchester boy shoved in to do take the crown after the dust settled.

Great to see a young, working class woman MP do so well in Gorton and Denton.

MrThorpeHazell · 28/02/2026 09:51

It's been like that every time a government, of any party, loses a by-election for as far back as I can remember and Wilson was in No 10 when I started voting.

I think thats the by-product of standing up for UK citizens unfortunately. We can't take in the world or prioritise the rights of non UK citizens over the wellbeing of UK citizens. Its just a fact of life and tax. Many people on the left dont like it of course.

Eskarina1 · 28/02/2026 09:55

Pineneedlesincarpet · 28/02/2026 08:46

Its not a happy day for most people. Legal heroin, date rape drugs and open borders does not sound an enticing prospect.

But these aren't green policies. They want to decriminalise drugs for personal use so they can focus on treatment and support. Which is a policy with public health evidence. It doesn't legalise supply or date rape drugs.

They have a dream of a world without borders but that is not policy. Their immigration policy is probably not as tight as people would want but it isn't open borders.

Oh and while I'm at it, there's no suggestion that there was sufficient vote cheating to change the result. It's been clearly stated that the margin is large enough that it's very very unlikely to have made a difference. There has been no evidenced commentary on who is involved or why. I get we all think it's Muslim families but this isn't official. There's also zero evidence that it's forced - it could be a confidence or language barrier thing. They may have voted alone if reminded family voting was illegal.

Also I highly doubt these presumed Muslim women and young adults would be predominantly reform voters. The only way the result would have changed even in margins is if we blocked them from voting. They are entitled to vote so we need to look at why, if they exist, they can't do it independently.

thepariscrimefiles · 28/02/2026 09:55

Pineneedlesincarpet · 28/02/2026 09:13

No. Thats not the current danger...your approach is too superficial. Its block voting on sectarian grounds which is the worry. Historically its been class that has divided us and why the Labour Party was established. That's changing now as the political system is Balkanising on religious lines in certain constituencies. Labour have obviously been panding to the Muslim vote but they seem to have left Labour to go Green now.

That poster was taking the piss out of your Islamophobic views.

Where are the Labour female leaders? Sort that out before talking down yet another female politician.
