'Being Gordon Ramsay' featuring dead pig!

Ffs! I'm just watching this Netflix show about Gordon Ramsay and his opening of a new restaurant with amazing views in the city. I'm not interested in him particularly, but thought I might go to this 'Lucky Cat' just for the views over London, if and whenever it opens.

BUT - then there is a scene where he is consulting with his head chef about the menu and there is a whole dead baby suckling pig on a plate. They are talking about making this a restaurant feature, requiring two chefs who carve it at your table.

AIBU to think this is obscene? Yes, I'm vegetarian, but I think even most meat eaters would balk at this?

If I were in his restaurant and that was going at the the next table, I would leave. Wtf is wrong with humans?

I once went to a wedding with 9 pigs on a hog roast. No veggie option (unless you just ate baguette).
It was in France though.

Are these baby pigs slaughtered the minute they are born? How is this considered appetising in any shape or form? What is wrong with people?

Wait till you hear about lamb.

And the poor lobsters? I think they get the worst deal.

paloma7 · 27/02/2026 17:27

I do think a lot of people who eat pork, probably do so because they like it but don't particularly want to dwell on where it comes from or how it was killed.

Buying bacon in Tesco or wherever is something millions do. But sitting eating pork with the pig's head in the table would not go down well with a lot of meat-eaters. It's just vile in any reckoning. Imagine paying for that.

I am vegetarian but I'm not going to tell other people what they can or can't eat.

What I find obscene is the making a spectacle of the whole dead animal. Like it's supposed to be a 'wow' factor. What can possibly be 'wow' about a baby pig, slaughtered at birth. To me, it's totally unnecessary and actually depraved.

Why is it ‘depraved’? The pig is dead either way. It’s neither more nor less dead than the pigs used to make bacon sandwiches, but those are presumably far enough removed from the animal to escape your depravity brush? You’re fine with people eating meat as long as it doesn’t look like the animal?

Chilena2022 · 27/02/2026 17:29

This is a typical dish from a Spanish city called Segovia. It is known as cochinillo.

Inextremis · 27/02/2026 17:29

I popped in to see a friend once, and she was in the middle of boiling a whole pig's head to make brawn. I thought it was a good thing that she was using every part of the animal that had been slaughtered. Also, the brawn was lovely.

Thought as much. And you’re not seeing how this is hypocritical and a bit stupid? No?

GenuineWorkOfFart · 27/02/2026 17:30

I've been veggie for over 40 years and it wouldn't bother me tbh.

If you are happy to eat dead animals then you have no business being upset at the sight of a dead animal being eaten! And if it bothers you that much, stop eating them [shrug]

paloma7 · 27/02/2026 17:32

I'm not particularly 'fine' with the meat industry, no, but I can't do much about it. I can only control what I eat myself and make a small difference that way.

I am not going to tell people they can't eat meat in restaurants, that is not the point. My point is, don't make a spectacle of the poor baby pig so that GR can whack his prices up and get on TikTok or whatever. That is what I find obscene.

You said you’re not going to tell people they can’t eat meat but at the same time calling it depraved.

Presentation of food in general is a huge part of the work of restaurants and it's how they market themselves.

What level of high-end presentation of meat would you find acceptable?

Tableforjoan · 27/02/2026 17:34

So it’s ok to eat meat as long as we don’t see the entire dead body. Lol

Frankly I’d rather people knew exactly how it was.

love a hog roast as well.

Hedgesandbutterflies · 27/02/2026 17:35

It's really normal meat elsewhere. Hog roast are equal "spectacle", so is rotisserie chicken🤷

showyourquality · 27/02/2026 17:35

I think it’s much healthier to own what meat actually is, which is dead animals than to prepackage it beyond recognition.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 27/02/2026 17:36

Most meat eaters would not care. I’ve been at parties and weddings with whole hog roasts on the spit.

Yabu to decide this is not ok for everyone and also to mention the Muslim perspective, as if this needs to be a primary concern in the UK.

DinoLil · 27/02/2026 17:36

What about a fish on the plate?

paloma7 · 27/02/2026 17:37

If you ordered veal, would you want the cow's head on the table while you ate?

Yes, people know where meat comes from, but many of them don't like to dwell on it too much. No meat eater I know would be particularly delighted with the head of a lamb, pig or cow on the table while they ate. Let's be honest.

FreshInks · 27/02/2026 17:37

@paloma7 you’re on another thread today calling the beef industry evil, so it’s meat eating in general that you appear to have a problem with. Not just Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant.

But I'm going to make sure they damn well know how disgusting I think it is and how awful they are as human beings.

Multiple times.

I would be inclined to say that's actually worse than telling people what they can and can't eat.

But you are doing just that ! . If you don’t want to be around meat then perhaps frequent a vegetarian restaurant!

DarkEyedSailor · 27/02/2026 17:38

I get a pigs head or half of one every so often. I make brawn. It's delicious.
I also buy trotters and cheeks from the market. I know where meat comes from. It doesn't bother me.

faerylights · 27/02/2026 17:38

I can't see the issue, tbh, but then my primary school had a pig that we "raised" and that got slaughtered for a bonfire night hog roast 😂

Sheeps head is a delicacy in many countries. Same with goat.

Do you feel the same way about whole fish being served? Or prawns?
