My DH has been brainwashed by tick tock conspiracies

Stressymessymum · 27/02/2026 12:45

It’s a bit long but I’m unsure how to deal with this behaviour.

during lockdown my DH ( previously was never into anything like this. was very normal, works in a hospital) fell into a habit of listening to conspiracy podcasts - he thought it was interesting and I didn’t think much of it. This hobby has carried on but increased and the last 3 months his behaviour is really off.

examples

No longer wants to vaccinate our children (oldest 2 are fully vaccinated, baby has had newborn jabs but not one year yet)

wants to home educate because he believes the schools are full of paedophiles and other kids ‘shed’ vaccinations. He doesn’t actually want to do any home ed. I think it’s something called unschooling but we both work full time. I’ve asked him for a plan on how he thinks it will work and he can’t tell me.

won’t let children socialise outside of school. Has removed them from clubs (for the same reasons as above.

wont socialise with vaccinated people (included our families)

wont drink Tap water. Baths in bottled water

refusing to pay council tax as it’s a made up scam (I do pay this 😂)

believes NASA/ moon landing/ 911/ holocaust ( and a long list of other things) is made up

That’s just the tip of the iceberg really…

I’ve tried to talk to him about it but he gets really angry and starts ranting.

who on earth do i talk to about this? I know he’s allowed his own beliefs but he’s dragging our children into it and the way it’s escalated I’m a bit scared xx

Were conspiracy theories around 50 years ago? I mean I'm 49 and Facebook, You Tube and tik tok weren't around when I was a kid so how did these people start believing in them then?

they wrote them in books then and radio shows coast to coast am with art bell and george norway

I think op has probably tried to support and help him already, and has come to the end of her tether. She says that now she’s ’a bit scared’. Time to put herself and her children first.

The JFK shooting was a big one. George Orwell and Aldous Huxley would have been classed as conspiracy theorists by some, probably still are even they moved in elite circles, and were light years ahead of many people.

The gnostic texts were interesting. The Alexandria library that was burned down with ancient texts so the church kept control of Christianity and kept people in fear. Conspiring against the masses is a conspiracy theoriy, and one that many in power have always done to keep masses subservient and sometimes obey rules that are absurd and dangerous. Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany used psyops to manipulate the minds of many as well as propaganda.

Actually religions itself is a mostly conspiracies. The moons landing has always been one, before social media.

Not all are to be dismissed, it depends on one’s perception and how they view events and their environment/culture.

  • you think this is why the library got burnt down? 🤔

It does sound like some kind of mental health issue. occupational Health is a good shout. What about community mental health team?
well done for putting yourself and your DC first OP. Hopefully his brother can help.

SparklyLeader · 28/02/2026 22:37

You speak to mental health services.

Laurmolonlabe · 28/02/2026 23:00

You shouldn't let him make decisions for the kids- he is clearly unbalanced, wanting alternative solutions but having no idea what they are means he is mentally ill- cut him out of the decision making now, before he causes irreparable damage to your children.

ChineseKeravan · 28/02/2026 23:10

Obviously when a man stops kids going to places they might enjoy, bathes himself in mineral water but does not care what his children will bathe themselves in, the show is over. He has put himself at the centre of his sick fantasy and no one else matters. This is what I cannot forgive

She needs to put her dc first.
Her dh needs professional help . Or may not meet criteria for help so she cannot support his crazy ideas

I couldn't stay married to someone who believed that Sandy Hook was a fabrication, and the bereaved parents were actors.

I very nearly didn't. The fact that me being so upset actually made a real impression was the saving grace.

A big conspiracy theory from 50 years ago was that "they" were controlling the weather. Unfortunately it turned out to be true, there are companies whose services you can employ if you have enough money, to make precipitation for you, with both aerial and ground based cloud seeding operations. For example http://weathermodification.com/cloud-seeding.php sells cloud seeding seeding services. Weather modification companies are now on the stock market, and some even boast that they have been refining the technology since the 1960's, eek. The people who found out first were made a laughing stock, for decades, and people will still call you stupid/crazy/conspiracy nut if you suggest the weather is bad from weather modification messing up the patterns- even though the weather modification company stocks are proudly and openly traded now. They don't bother to check before they shred you

I am not trying to be flippant, but I am concerned for his mental health reading this. He sounds deeply unwell.

There are definitely people in these communities who have mental health issues that are exacerbated or even caused by the rabbit holes they go down. But I don't think that should be the default assumption.

The majority of them are just really, really stupid. The problem we're having now is that during COVID, they had time on their hands and found eachother on the internet. Social media has empowered them with a platform to share all their stupid ideas and an audience that will agree with them, because they're also stupid.

Laurmolonlabe · 01/03/2026 07:26

Andouillette · 01/03/2026 00:00

Yeah, in 48BC. No Christianity around then. Make it make sense!

The library in Alexandria burnt down several times, religions are structured to control people- burning down a library is unnecessary.
There are elements of conspiracy woven throughout our lives, but for the purposes of the OP this is irrelevant, conspiracies about JFK or religion do not leave our children unprotected and uneducated-that is what is important here.

Not protecting or educating your children because of a conspiracy theory pretty much qualifies I would say.

Small scale cloud-seeding experiments have been going on for decades. This is info that’s in the public domain. It’s available on Wikipedia and elsewhere.

But that is where the truth stops.

It’s a notoriously difficult to ‘cloud seed’. There are too many variables - notably wind direction and humidity, which make it a very inexact science with unpredictable results. It has never taken off as a weather-modification tool, and has not been widely adopted because it’s too difficult to get it right.

Because there have been various, very localised experiments, over so many years (with only partial or very mixed success), some people have picked up this particular baton and sprinted with it, and are now suggesting that ‘they’ are ‘blocking the sun’ via ‘chemtrails’. Facebook has thousands of reels on the subject, mostly presented by pseudo- / bogus academics or scientists (I have looked a couple of them up). Even GB News has run stories on it. Unfortunately, as other posters have pointed out, the gullible and the people who want this to be true, can find themselves helplessly lost in this echo chamber.

Weather modification is not taking place on any scale, and certainly not above the British Isles or neighbouring countries. Even in regions where there is a more pressing need for it, the technology hasn’t been refined sufficiently for cloud seeding to take place frequently, systematically or with any accuracy.

When people mention ‘cloud seeding’ / ‘chemtrails’ / ‘spraying the skies’ in an invested way, it is a shorthand way for them to announce that they are willing to adopt the views of dubious two-minute FB reels, without doing any further research or critical thinking about the subject.

Yes!!!! He’s recently started ( about 12 months ago) not at home but with friends.

I know nothing about weed but could this be a big issue?! He claims it’s a tiny amount

So he’s happy to poison his body with whatever’s in those smokes?
Maybe make a bargain you’ll do what he says IF & WHEN he gives up the drugs…
(I wouldnt believe he only started a yr ago either)

I didnt offer half baked pseudo science, I offered the website where you can PURCHASE cloud seeding SERVICES, both land based and aerial.

The industry is alive and well, because it is very difficult to do, so the people who can do it have a very unique product.

Same as heart surgeons, and other difficult things, it doesn't stop people, it just increases the value of the service.

I answered a question that caught my eye, that I could answer. It shouldn't have sparked a "debunking" response because there's no pseudo science, theory or opinion, its literally a link to where you can purchase precipitation.
