This country is doomed

While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

This is true, but not all Muslims are the same. I worked in the Middle East for 20 years and they cannot believe what we are allowing in the UK. Hence the UAE no longer allowing students to attend UK universities. A serious state sanctioned action that seems largely ignored by the media.

Its true that not all Muslims think the same way. But there are certain groups largely non ME culture that think certain ways, Gaza etc. Ignoring this fact is why the UK is doomed. Stopping people discussing this is definitely a tactic.

The UAE is an authoritarian regime.

It’s funny how you right wingers love those when it suits you, eh?

And you need to wake up @nomas and open you eyes to what’s going on

What is ‘going on’ exactly?

Marmalademorning · 27/02/2026 09:56

How frightening that nearly 50% of people voted YABU. You have to wonder what’s going through the minds of all the so-called loving parents who are happy for their children to grow up in a country ruled by a hard-left extremist party.

I've voted Green for years and would be delighted if they were successful at the next election. Obviously a Reform win would be highly problematic though. What's your issue with the Green party exactly?

What are you excited about policy wise?

Apparently the Greens are a Trojan horse for an Islamic State government.

Can this not turn into yet another thread where everyone gets accused of antisemitism?

As long as nobody posts anything anti-semitic, there'll be nothing for anyone else to call out.

glitterpaperchain · 27/02/2026 09:57

dubbie · 27/02/2026 09:56

What policies?

If you want to know what Green's policies are there's plenty of information on their website

But we get worse every year so it’s kind of true.

I think as people get older they think the world is always coming to an end. I remember my father saying the same thing in the 90/2000s.

Who would you have voted for in a choice between Reform and Greens?

So smart of these militant Islamists to elect a gay Jewish man as leader, it makes the perfect smokescreen for their true intentions.😉

What a weird, patronising post to say voting green is just a protest vote

I know many people who are planning to vote green in full seriousness because they support the party and their policies

Wow. It is not a new tactic to vote for somebody as a protest. The last GE was mainly fought on a protest against the Conservatives and the likelihood yesterday was a protest vote against Labour (and to keep out Reform) so not patronising at all to state it was a protest vote.

Would it be more efficient to just allow community leaders or husbands to vote on behalf of women? That way they don’t need to leave the house.

They make me cringe, especially Hannah Spencer

That's because Islam is at a different stage in its evolution than Christianity. It's a younger religion. We were still fighting religious wars 500 years ago and if we'd been a democracy then (we weren't) then probably it would have helped win or lose some votes.

I don't disagree with you. The problem is, though, that it's a problem.

It's really interesting. Whilst most of the country has moved right, the Greens have succeeded by going very very left.

I'd like to think it's a protest against the Right Wing movement as much as against the government.

I don’t think most of the country has moved right. The electorate has been more left wing than the FPTP system would have you believe. it’s just that the left has been more fragmented.

My guess is that a lot is accounted for by the parties that have moved because Farage has split the right and everyone is chasing a proportion of the electorate that is further right than would be normal for them. Except for greens who are mopping up the left of the party left by Labour moving further right. There are some other things going on within that that have to do with Farage being extremely good at what he does.

Maia77 · 27/02/2026 09:02

I like Greens. They are a new and improved Labour.

In what way?

Mangelwurzelfortea · 27/02/2026 10:00

There's another thread about right-wingers being sore losers and I thought I was on that one for a minute.

Looking forward to the Greens resurrecting Osama Bin Laden and making him Prime Minister.

MissScarletInTheBedroom · 27/02/2026 10:00

adlitem · 27/02/2026 08:31

Or maybe it's a wake up call to the main political parties that they need to do better. It's always just been Conservatives vs Labour, competition has been limited, they've not really had to work terribly hard for it. Maybe people have had enough.

This, basically.

The county is no "doomed" as the OP so eloquently surmises; if it were that that doom already happened when the electorate decided it was a good idea to shoot itself in the foot over Brexit.

What we are seeing, in dramatic realtime, is nothing short of a revolution; the dismantling of the tired, old regimes. The only thing that worries me, as a left-leaning academic, is whether this country lurches further to the right or takes a step back to breathe and reflect before committing any more acts of national self-sabotage.

BunfightBetty · 27/02/2026 10:01

plutosache · 27/02/2026 09:55

But radicals of any kind (green and reform) are by definition, radical. I don’t want a radical government. I want a kind of centre party that judges each issue on its merits rather than some stupid fucking unthinking party line.

Exactly this.

If only we could have this.

Hard left extremist?

I didn't see anything in their manifesto that is hard left extremist. Left certainly, but nowhere near hard left extremism.

Do you even understand the phrase you used?

Fortunately it is unlikely that we only have two choices to vote for. If that were the case I'd destroy my ballot paper.

It's frustrating but it is what it is. The genie is out of the bottle there so we just have to deal with it. I live in an area with a large Muslim population and of course Gaza is a big issue, but it's not an election-winner here. I suspect the Greens also did well because of anti-Labour, anti-Starmer sentiment leading to their usual voters switching to Green to keep Reform out. They just had a better campaign.
