A cottage pie ready meal with ‘use by 25th’ on it!

DS is 7 - will it cause any adverse effects?

OP posts:
JessLou80 · 26/02/2026 17:26

I’m sure he will be ok OP - I think I would be questioning the cottage pie too but I think just one day should be fine

ChaToilLeam · 26/02/2026 17:27

I agree, there will be preservatives in it and it was cooked for a long time.

Do you think food goes off at midnight on their use by date?

If I had £1 everything I had eaten "out of date" I would be a rich woman!

I am an olio food waste hero - its unusual we eat anything in date lol. If I had £1 for anything I had eaten out of date I would be a millionaire. In 2 years of being an olio fwh we have never had food poisoning. I have a massive freezer and use it well but even then things may be in the fridge for 1 or 2 days past the use by and I will still use it happily. Only thing I am careful of is fish

Soontobe60 · 26/02/2026 17:27

LTB!!!

ExtraOnions · 26/02/2026 17:28

Thanks - so far have shared 6951 listings with 264 people in my community - they all seem to still be alive as they keep coming back

Good work! 👍 Genuinely!

Hankunamatata · 26/02/2026 17:42

It doesn't magically go off at midnight

Bluespottedfrog · 26/02/2026 17:42

25th Feb? Or Jan?

MarjorieWestriding · 26/02/2026 17:43

Given the amount of out of date food I've eaten over the years, it's probably a miracle I'm still alive. I think the most out of date things have been some tinned beans and tomatoes that were about five years out of date and some vacuum packed pitta breads that were ten years old. They didn't taste as good as they might have done but nothing untoward happened.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 26/02/2026 17:46

He'll be fine, food won't be giving anyone a dose of the runs if stored correctly, it doesn't know its only one day past its date.....I've just opened, portioned out and shoved some bacon in the freezer that went OOD on the 20th.. smelt fine...will obviously give it the ok to eat once defrosted and cooked.

Infact I'm on a mission to actually eat things before they go OOD, not going to well hence the bacon, but at least my Greek yogurt is only 4 days past its best.

Jlom · 26/02/2026 17:48

When I was a student one of my flat mates worked for a supermarket and lived off out of date ready meals because she got them for free. We all ate quite a lot of them and never got ill.

GrinchPink · 26/02/2026 17:49

Divorce immediately. Horrible father

Somersetbaker · 26/02/2026 17:50

Wallywobbles · 26/02/2026 16:20

I despair. Did it smell ok, taste ok and look ok? Presumably yes or he wouldn’t have eaten it. It’s a ready meal so about as chemically stable and likely to go rancid as a macdonalds.

I'm not sure a McDonalds is a good example, there's one on display in Iceland (the country not the shop) that still shows no sign of going off after many years, the last McDonalds their closed in 2009! I suspect a cottage pie from Iceland (the shop) may not last as long.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 26/02/2026 17:53

Brewtiful · 26/02/2026 16:20

Likewise!

It's also quite concerning that such people can vote.

When I’ve been teaching or training people, I always tell them there’s no such thing as a stupid question. We all have gaps in our knowledge. The smart thing to do is ask questions and find out.

People sometimes keep quiet because they don’t want to look stupid. I tell them the truth: if anything’s silly, it’s missing your chance to find out something you need to know.

Delphiniumandlupins · 26/02/2026 17:54

Presumably this meal had been in your fridge for a few days? Why do you think it would suddenly become Inedible at midnight? Obviously it would gradually deteriorate in quality over time but probably weeks rather than hours.

gingercat02 · 26/02/2026 17:56

There will be so many preservatives in it it would probably last forever 🤣

Sid9nie · 26/02/2026 17:58

No it'll be fine.

TheWibble · 26/02/2026 17:58

No.

Megifer · 26/02/2026 17:58

Op was your 7 year old eating a meal at midnight?
