A cottage pie ready meal with ‘use by 25th’ on it!

DS is 7 - will it cause any adverse effects?

OP posts:
stichguru · 26/02/2026 16:32

No - no company is ever going to want to be sued by someone who has eaten food on the use by date and become very unwell, so everyone will put a use by date a good week or so prior to the last day the food will be safe.

Hollowvoice · 26/02/2026 16:32

My eldest ate something yesterday which was 3 days "out of date"
Appears to be still alive...

kohlrabislaw · 26/02/2026 16:33

There must be more to this. I’m expecting a drip feed resulting in a unanimous LTB response.

Tableforjoan · 26/02/2026 16:34

Aye the food doesn’t know if its the 25/26 or 27th to know it has to instantly turn toxic at midnight.

If it looked ok and smelt ok it will be ok.

OnGoldenPond · 26/02/2026 16:35

Of course it will be fine! Use by dates are often a big con designed to get people to bin perfectly edible food and buy more, thus increasing the profits of the food retailers. If it does not smell off or look visibly discoloured, it will be fine. Trust me, I have a microbiology degree Smile

If it makes you feel any better there’s a thread where a DH and toddler ate sushi that had been sat in a car for a week AND had expired the week before, when OP last posted (a few hours after the event) they were still ok …

Alittlefrustrated · 26/02/2026 16:39

Not worth another thought OP. Do you suffer from anxiety?

Mydogisagentleman · 26/02/2026 16:39

111 now

stargirl27 · 26/02/2026 16:40

LTB and A&E like yesterday.

FartyAnimal · 26/02/2026 16:42

Sigh. Of course your son is at risk. As soon as midnight on the use by date passes, the food instantly grows tons of bacteria and causes DEATH!

Coconutter24 · 26/02/2026 16:42

He will be absolutely fine!! It’s all precooked anyway. If he had ate it at 10pm last night would you be so concerned about it? Probably not right because it says the 25th, it isn’t going to go extremely bad since midnight…. he will be fine!

Tempodrom · 26/02/2026 16:43

ffs Hmm

BauhausOfEliott · 26/02/2026 16:43

No.

Had you reported yourself to child services and serious crimes yet? 😂

Hey OP just out of curiously how many times have you taken (abused) your GP in the last year. I’m guessing double digits.

Christmassparkletree · 26/02/2026 16:44

I’m guessing this is piss take of the sushi post yesterday…if it’s not then I really worry how some adults function in everyday life with questions like this 😅

NewZebra · 26/02/2026 16:45

Jesus

TheMoanerLisa · 26/02/2026 16:28

Do you think food goes off at midnight on their use by date?

If I had £1 everything I had eaten "out of date" I would be a rich woman!

Of course it does...there is a little microchip inside, that pings at midnight and generates all the E coli, Campylobacter and Salmonella to cause Dysentery and shouts "Rot, rot, rot"!

amusedbush · 26/02/2026 16:48

I wouldn't give this a second thought, but admittedly I treat best before dates as a challenge rather than a recommendation 😅

HoorayHattie · 26/02/2026 16:48

I have an elderly neighbour who lives off ready meals. Her family turn up intermittently, sort through her fridge and bin anything which is past the use by date. As soon as the family have left, she takes the meals out the bin and puts them back in her fridge. She will soon be celebrating her 95th birthday . . .

ExtraOnions · 26/02/2026 16:50

Grey Rock it … ducks in a row and all that

WilfredsPies · 26/02/2026 16:51

If it didn’t smell funny, it didn’t taste funny and it didn’t look funny then it will be absolutely fine. They’re more of a guideline than

I mean this with kindness but it’s quite an unusual reaction to something so inconsequential. Do you struggle with this sort of stuff? I know lots of posters are taking the Mickey, but it’s ok if you do. I have stuff that I deal with completely irrationally. Loads of us do.

Arran2024 · 26/02/2026 16:56

What do you think happens at midnight on the 25th exactly?

gototogo · 26/02/2026 16:59

As long as it was cooked until piping hot it will be fine, they don’t become dangerous on a set date

AmusedMember · 26/02/2026 17:01

Oh dear, time to kick the husband out. How dare he! 😂

Lifeomars · 26/02/2026 17:03

The horror, the horror.... Seriously, some of the things that people post about on here are astonishing.
