To not understand the Wetherspoons game on social media?

SayWibble · 24/02/2026 22:32

I occasionally see posts from a Wetherspoons game group on FB, whereby people in a branch of Wetherspoons post a photo of themselves and who they’re with, their table number, and ask strangers to buy them table-service drinks via the app.

I don’t really understand what the game element is, or what the buyers get out of this?

Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone explain?

OP posts:

I'm not morally superior.

I just dont understand how cadging free drinks and food from other people when you are on a night out is a " game".

It's demeaning for the people cadging the stuff. And stupid of the people actually buying stuff and wasting it on freeloaders - more money than sense
.
And both lots are being made fools of by a marketing exercise by Wetherspoons to boost their sales.

How can people actually allow themselves to fall for this nonsense?

Oh fucking give over. You sound absolutely insufferable.
It's a bit of FUN. Are you aware of fun?

Itstimeforachangeagain · 25/02/2026 16:16

@ScholesPanda
I'm not forcing any one to live by my rules.

OP started this thread because she said she didn't understand the rules of this " game". I'd never heard of the thing before this thread. I voiced my opinion on it and have replied to various posters who have commented on what I've said.

Tbh although I used to like Wetherspoons when the brand was first introduced myself and most people I know actively boycott their pubs now because of the way their staff are treated and because of the views of their owner.

This " game" has confirmed my low opinion of what Wetherspoon's pubs have become and if this is what goes on in them I'm glad I don't go in them anymore.
But I'm not stopping the people who actually want to participate in this ridiculous nonsense doing so. I just thank goodness I don't have to witness it

Howarewealldoing · 25/02/2026 16:20

It’s not begging which someone has stated it’s a group and people on the group send each other drinks etc when in weatherspoons. The people that normally receive will normally buy others drinks on a different day . Just a bit of fun .

Yes I'm aware of fun.

How is freeloading drinks and food " fun"?

In my world freeloaders are " insufferable.

Since when did this become a " fun" way to behave?

Itstimeforachangeagain · 24/02/2026 23:01

Well why i wouldn't understand why my OH was wasting his money on , presumably, total strangers
Has he nothing better to do with his time and money ?

Wasting his money? It’s a side order of peas from Wetherspoons which are like £1…

Lighten up!

Again… some people find it funny, I freely admit I am one of them… why is that hard to accept? Why do you need to use derogatory language?
someone sends me a random drink via the app, saves me the price of a round, so paying that back to someone else who plays = net cost.
Even if it costs me more than I save, then I’m in a fortunate position that I don’t miss that £20 a month.
If it satisfy’s your confused heart they also run events where they get the pub involved and you order a set menu which is then distributed to local homeless… does that make it more palatable to you?
As you won’t answer what you do find amusing/fun, do you participate in random acts of kindness? Donate to food banks (and not the odd tin of own-brand beans)

It’s not freeloading is it?

it’s a social media game. Everyone taking part is willing and able to

Please explain it to me then.

I'm certainly struggling to see anything at all positive in this.

I thought going to the pub was something people did irl? To socialise with real people, in real time, in person.

Can people really not experience anything without involving Social Media? Are they really so addicted? Have they really no way of enjoying themselves without it?

He's American.

I wonder why they all think we like peas much.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall at that. What did you say? Grin

We just laughed and teased her a bit. She's absolutely bonkers anyway. I do like peas, mind.

As I've already said I gave up on Wetherspoons a long time ago. And reading this thread has confirmed i made the right decision. I honestly didn't know it had sunk quite so low.

GanninHyem · 25/02/2026 16:33

Well, the "fun" element is in the surprise surely. Are you going to get a pint or a portion of peas? I don't so much like the food waste but Spoons have cottoned on and usually reject those type of orders. I'm not sure why it's so awful?

You know what's also not awful? The good he has done with the group. I know at one point they fed over 400 homeless people in one night. It's not actually ran by Spoons though, you do realise that?

You're right, it's the collapse of society.

Backinajiffy · 25/02/2026 16:34

Flashing cleavage in the hope of getting free drinks from pervy strangers is so demeaning imo.
Christ knows what Emily Pankhurst would make of it.

Well yes actually.

I think the very fact you and your pals on this thread think that this is normal and acceptable behaviour, that you all are trying to present it as "fun" , is very much a symptom of a society that has been totally warped by Social Media.

A society that has totally lost it's way as regards normal and decent behaviour. And people who can't hack it in the real world because everything has to be played out for the benefit of Social Media.

I hope there are laws passed to outlaw the use of Social Media for under 16s. Unfortunately it's too late for the generations that have already been skewed by it

IwishIcouldconfess · 25/02/2026 16:48

Itstimeforachangeagain · 25/02/2026 15:57

I'm very sorry for their loss.

But if their reaction to losing a baby is to use their loss to guilt people into buying them alcohol that is absolutely repugnant.

I think my opinion of this nonsense " game" just got even lower than it was before..

I must admit it made me feel sick to my stomach!

Can't say after the 4 miscarriages I have had, that going to Wetherspoons, showing my sick note and asking for drinks, would have crossed my mind!

You're right, it's an absolute affront to public decency. The downfall of all that is moral and righteous. The death throes of a once thriving, upstanding culture. How are the mighty fallen.

nods even more gravely

I really hope some joy finds you soon. Something light-hearted. Not everything is so serious. This is literally a bit of fun.

Yes you get people taking the piss but you get that in everything. Look.at the Greggs thread. I personally think you find a giggle where you can.

I personally don't like weatherspoons. The place has no soul and it's miles to the bog.

Doesn't really bother me. Some groups are better than others and do stuff for charity. I've sent more than I have received. There's one really horrible group on Facebook that has no admins and it's just abusive.

It's pretty hilarious wherever you plonk it. She's talking about consensually sending pints and peas to a random table somewhere.

These groups have nothing to do with Wetherspoons at all. It's people playing a game
