To not understand the Wetherspoons game on social media?

SayWibble · 24/02/2026 22:32

I occasionally see posts from a Wetherspoons game group on FB, whereby people in a branch of Wetherspoons post a photo of themselves and who they’re with, their table number, and ask strangers to buy them table-service drinks via the app.

I don’t really understand what the game element is, or what the buyers get out of this?

Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone explain?

Someone I know did it and got an entire night out for free

Worth a shot with the price of everything these days

MrsMitford3 · 25/02/2026 11:43

My DC used to send me their table number when they were poor students and I'd often send a round.

Sometimes they'd post it somewhere and get random things-all in good fun and I think a very clever game!

soontobeamama · 25/02/2026 11:59

My brother in law was out with his son for his first legal pint when he turned 18 and let us know what table they were at - we were then able to buy him some drinks to help celebrate - we couldn’t be there, so it was a nice way to still be part of the occasion.

BillieWiper · 25/02/2026 12:05

People send stupid stuff over and it's a challenge for the recipient to consume it.

So they might get twelve portions of peas, or vodka mixed with milk, or an ice-cream with meat on it or something?

Seems kind of harmless could be seen as wasteful as a lot of it probably does get chucked.

But someone might just be feeling kind and buy someone a pint and some food then they ask someone else to do it next time. I guess?

JustAnotherWhinger · 25/02/2026 12:09

The game element is meant to be that hen you post people send drinks to you, then when others post you send to them. It was originally a reciprocal fun thing.

As with most things in social media it’s nowhere near as fun as it used to be

Has nobody got any self respect any more?
Absolutely gross begging strangers for drinks.
Nothing funny about it at all.

Might not be funny to you, why so sanctimonious about how others find amusement? Out of curiosity what do you find amusing?

I’ve played a couple of times and sent a few times too it’s funny when out with friend or two to see what you get!

How do you react when you seepeople begging in the street? The majority of them do it out of necessity. But you are happy to beg for fun . And to give to free loaders who don't need to beg to survive.
So no it's not amusing on any level.

The fact it's putting money in the pocket of the right wing obnoxious owner of Wetherspoons makes it even more disgusting.

I follow him as well. It was so funny. They closed the table in 3 minutes.

The random fries egg just finished me off next to all the peas.

That post made me laugh, i think it was for his friend visiting who doesn’t like peas?

I've never seen an example of this being 'begging', in every case I have seen, it has been someones followers who have asked for the table number and actively want to do this.

I guess people short of funds could try it but you'd need a significant number of followers on a platform for it to work, and tbh if you have that and tell them you're going to 'Spoons, they'll likely suggest if if they're the type to send stuff.

I think its daft, but I follow Kalani and it was pretty funny seeing all the peas coming out. They did ask the staff if it was ok, and shut it down in under 4 minutes when the staff said it'd crashed their ordering software. They also shared out the unwanted drinks with other people in the pub at the time, so no waste.

Yeah he thought the British all ate peas for breakfast or something so got tortured with them.

He's a good sport.

ThatCyanCat · 25/02/2026 15:14

There's not much to understand. It's just a way of having some fun. Put yourself up for it and see what you get, send a drink or a bowl of peas to a stranger if you're so inclined. A bit of slightly silly and at its heart good natured interaction between people. No need to overthink or, for the love of God, moralise. If it's not for you, don't do it.

someones followers

So who are these followers? Do you mean people they know irl, because that's not the impression pp were giving up thread.

Even if they are friends irl it still smacks of people having no self respect. If you can't afford to buy your own food and drink you should stay at home.

My OH sends them a side order of peas. I am not sure there is a lot to understand.

Me too!

Pollqueen · 25/02/2026 15:36

Just seems like a huge waste of food and wasting the time of already busy waiting staff. But crack on

I think you need to lighten up… this isn’t begging it’s a game on social media, if you don’t want to play then don’t.
How do I react when I see people begging? Well Dan and Luke who live rough near me, I buy them food whenever I see them, buy them Baccy on payday, that sort of thing, not sure that’s relevant to the spoons game though.

You didn’t mention what you do find amusing? Other than trying (and failing) to portray yourself as morally superior to others?

Where was his friend from? I have a German friend who made an enormous vat of peas when she had us round for dinner once, because she had it in her head that Brits love peas (and apparently eat them by the bucket).

He's American.

I wonder why they all think we like peas much.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall at that. What did you say? Grin

notacooldad · 25/02/2026 15:49

I follow an American called kalani (on fb). He did this the other day and he had dozens of bowls of peas sent to him.
Balance is fabulous! He has inadvertently done so much to promote the UK he should be on the Tourist Boards payroll!!

I'm not morally superior.

I just dont understand how cadging free drinks and food from other people when you are on a night out is a " game".

It's demeaning for the people cadging the stuff. And stupid of the people actually buying stuff and wasting it on freeloaders - more money than sense
.
And both lots are being made fools of by a marketing exercise by Wetherspoons to boost their sales.

How can people actually allow themselves to fall for this nonsense?

There was a couple on last week asking for drinks after a miscarriage!

I'm very sorry for their loss.

But if their reaction to losing a baby is to use their loss to guilt people into buying them alcohol that is absolutely repugnant.

I think my opinion of this nonsense " game" just got even lower than it was before..

Whenever I read posts like yours, I always think they must be from a very strong person.

It must be hard enough to stick to a stringent set of rules for yourself, but then to add this need to force everyone else to live their lives in the same way and getting wound up when you realise they won't do, and you can't make them.

It must be exhausting being you.

Has he nothing better to do with his time and money ?

You are on mumsnet, I’d say people in glass houses! Not the money but the wasting time. I’m here as well of course so guilty.
