To not understand the Wetherspoons game on social media?

SayWibble · 24/02/2026 22:32

I occasionally see posts from a Wetherspoons game group on FB, whereby people in a branch of Wetherspoons post a photo of themselves and who they’re with, their table number, and ask strangers to buy them table-service drinks via the app.

I don’t really understand what the game element is, or what the buyers get out of this?

Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone explain?

Also just to say that the better run Facebook groups don't allow alcohol to be sent to families with young kids. They get soft drinks only.

It's pretty hilarious wherever you plonk it. She's talking about consensually sending pints and peas to a random table somewhere.

I’m convinced it’s a wind up , clearly nothing better to do . Prop do them good to get down to a weatherspoons and have a drink 🤣

It's hardly begging, is it? There's no pressure on anyone to buy anything. Often people don't get anything at all.

I don't understand what people don't get about it. It's really not that deep, or complicated.

The benefit to the drinker is potentially getting free items, and a funny story.
The benefit to the donater is a feeling of goodwill (i.e. like literally any other good deed) if they buy something nice, and a (mildly) funny joke if they buy something silly.
Both benefit from a bit of human connection from strangers they'd have otherwise never interacted with.
The benefit to wetherspoons is making money by having people who aren't even in their pub spending money.

Everyone's benefitting apart from sad losers who have nothing better to do than moan about something that doesn't affect them in the slightest.

I've never played but have seen it come up on FB a few times. The people who tend to get a lot of items usually have a funny/cute/heartwarming story that people like to donate to.

Which is probably lies designed to get the maximum benefit. It is begging like the gofundme rubbish. And the people going door to door wanting you to sponsor them on what is really a holiday of a lifetime dressed up as some charitable thing. They really have no shame.

Yes I'm aware of fun.

How is freeloading drinks and food " fun"?

In my world freeloaders are " insufferable.

Since when did this become a " fun" way to behave?

You know what - I don't particularly care if someone is sitting in a pub free loading. There are lots of reasons why someone might ask for a meal or a drink and no one is forced to send them anything. And on most of these groups you are asked to send before you ask for anything back

Might be, but I think I believe it. MN is full of people who can't wait to give ridiculous moralistic lectures about things with absolutely no moral value (last time I saw people declare something to be this much of a hazard to common decency, it was Christmas Eve boxes). It's a long and fine tradition on here. If it is a wind up, well, I'm enjoying it. Good trolling should be fun and ultimately harmless.

Someone who's on one of these groups, send them this thread. They'll be up for the giggle.

”I’m aware of fun” but I just don’t participate in such trivial activities, me, my starched knickers and pearls couldn’t possibly lower standards beyond a good game of bridge and raising my nightie on birthdays at any cost 🙄

i do feel sorry for you as you come across as someone that has forgotten how to belly laugh with real friends and live in the moment even if just for a few hours.

Itstimeforachangeagain · 25/02/2026 16:16

@ScholesPanda
I'm not forcing any one to live by my rules.

OP started this thread because she said she didn't understand the rules of this " game". I'd never heard of the thing before this thread. I voiced my opinion on it and have replied to various posters who have commented on what I've said.

Tbh although I used to like Wetherspoons when the brand was first introduced myself and most people I know actively boycott their pubs now because of the way their staff are treated and because of the views of their owner.

This " game" has confirmed my low opinion of what Wetherspoon's pubs have become and if this is what goes on in them I'm glad I don't go in them anymore.
But I'm not stopping the people who actually want to participate in this ridiculous nonsense doing so. I just thank goodness I don't have to witness it

Edited

How are the staff treated? I'm not the biggest fan of Martin but I don't think anyone can say with conviction that all staff aren't treated well. I know people who have worked for them for over 20 years

ClaredeBear · 25/02/2026 17:18

Itstimeforachangeagain · 24/02/2026 22:58

Has nobody got any self respect any more?
Absolutely gross begging strangers for drinks.
Nothing funny about it at all.

Well you’re a lot of fun!

Hedgesandbutterflies · 25/02/2026 17:30

😂😂😂😂😂
This thread is actually more fun than the game

Stop making me fall over laughing while I'm supposed to be making dinner.

Am I allowed to say "fuck off, you smug boring cunt" without naming names @Itstimeforachangeagain
I don't name change. Because I rarely regret what I post.

Former spoons employee here - we fucking hate them. I used to love kicking them out or cutting them off, like I would actually come out of the office to do it myself. It’s extremely annoying for the staff, especially the kitchen staff who already have it extremely shit (aircon never works, something is always broken, burning yourself on the pizza tray).

Tbf staff are treated well, especially managers. Good bonuses, great stock options, when me and DH left we both had like 5k of shares. Tim is a pain when he comes in though and an abysmal tipper.

RaininSummer · 25/02/2026 18:44

Creepy begging I think. Not cute or funny at all.

OK, if actual staff don't like it that's another matter. Do they really get that many orders coming in for it? Is it not good to improve sales and publicity?

(I never heard of this game until this thread. Don't know what people are struggling to understand though, concept seems pretty simple to me.)

Honestly sometimes it was like a couple of orders, but often (especially if it was attractive girls playing it) it would get ridiculous. I was in a city center pub with one of the busiest kitchens in the UK so we were often swamped as it is. It was also common on a Saturday night or football day for people to play it and they’re busy as it is.

Spoons has a 10 min rule (from order to table in sub 10 mins) if it’s longer than 10 mins the ticket goes red. If our average time goes above 10 mins you get bollocked by the area manager and your bonuses get cut. It also causes significant wastage which I really didn’t like, but that’s a me issue. Because of how the pubs are run if you get backed up it can really mess up service and then you get complaints ect.

There's always going to be people who abuse it but any time I received I didn't. It's not going to stop any time soon though with that fella Chris who dines out on the so called good work his group does. It's the people who sent peas and soy sauce or whatever that ruin it for others

scottishgirl69 · 25/02/2026 19:31

In my local spoons nothing comes to the table in ten minutes. It's mobbed and they don't have enough staff. I waited 45 a few months ago for food

Current Spoonie here! Yep, hate the game. Kids milk ha ha ha. It's not funny, it's wasteful and just makes my job harder.

No, and one or two drinks is fine but by the fifth bowl of peas it stops being funny.

You can cut that off surely. When I was in the pub and someone tried to send me peas staff asked me if I had ordered them and I said no and I didn't get them

notacooldad · 26/02/2026 04:31

*I follow an American called kalani (on fb). He did this the other day and he had dozens of bowls of peas sent to him.
Balance is fabulous! He has inadvertently done so much to promote the UK he should be on the Tourist Boards payroll!!

I just noticed Kalani's name was auto corrected to Balance.
My post made no sense!!!

HelpMeGetThrough · 26/02/2026 06:10

I’ll see if my youngest and his mates are doing this, as they go to Wetherspoons.

Zanatdy · 26/02/2026 06:24

It’s so wasteful. I get sending someone a drink who puts a sob story on (personally I wouldn’t participate either side) but sending bowls of peas? Ridiculous, and it’s clear it causes problems for staff. Hope they refuse all the pea orders and refuse to return the money.
