To not understand the Wetherspoons game on social media?

SayWibble · 24/02/2026 22:32

I occasionally see posts from a Wetherspoons game group on FB, whereby people in a branch of Wetherspoons post a photo of themselves and who they’re with, their table number, and ask strangers to buy them table-service drinks via the app.

I don’t really understand what the game element is, or what the buyers get out of this?

Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone explain?

People don't always put a sob story to get a drink. There are groups where people send and then after they send they can receive. There are also games where you buy meals for homeless people and it's Co ordinated with the pub managers.

I follow him as well. It was so funny. They closed the table in 3 minutes.

The random fries egg just finished me off next to all the peas.

You sit there and watch people get bowls off peas delivered to their table ordered by strangers in Wetherspoons?

is this not a massive waste of food/drink and the staff's time?

Meh, not sure what there is to understand?
You post a pic of you in Spoons, with your table number and drink preferences or whatever, and somebody might send you a drink or they might not. Or a food item, I've seen people get desserts.
It's just a bit of fun. Buy somebody a drink or don't. No harm done. Each to their own, there's some right miseries on MN.

Itstimeforachangeagain · 25/02/2026 16:46

Well yes actually.

I think the very fact you and your pals on this thread think that this is normal and acceptable behaviour, that you all are trying to present it as "fun" , is very much a symptom of a society that has been totally warped by Social Media.

A society that has totally lost it's way as regards normal and decent behaviour. And people who can't hack it in the real world because everything has to be played out for the benefit of Social Media.

I hope there are laws passed to outlaw the use of Social Media for under 16s. Unfortunately it's too late for the generations that have already been skewed by it

FFS man, get a grip

The people who spoil it are the ones who send eggs and peas. There's a huge group (instant approval) on Facebook. The mods have been locked out and it's pretty much just a page full of bots and people abusing one another but the other ones seem to be well run

No one forces people to send.

Seems it can be.

The idea behind it, though, about sending a random drink or plate to someone, is quite quirky and fun. Shame it can go wrong in practice but I still like the concept. Time was people would occasionally pay for the order of the person right behind them or the table next to them or something.

No, I follow him in general.

Kinda 1+1 stuff dude, did you mean to ask that? You could have taken your time and made it really good. Try harder. 😉

I'm just very surprised someone would sit there and watch that. Yes I meant to ask that. Checking that you really do sit there and watch videos of that. But you said no. So I guess it's not 1+1 stuff. I still have no idea if you do or not, as you said no.

I guess it's because it's taken to social media so much and now you have people filming their most 'hilarious' sends to people that it's gotten out of control then. What a pain that must be for the staff!

No I get that part! I mean the PP watches the videos of people getting plates of random food delivered to them, apparently bowls of peas over and over. Sounds really odd (IMO)

The staff can refuse to make the orders. Someone sent me peas once when friends were sending me a drink - obviously someone thought it would be funny and staff came over to me and asked if I wanted them and I said no -they can cut people off and halt the game at any point

Some people get their kicks watching people's reactions to consensually receiving random drinks and plates, some people get theirs from performatively pretending to be so far above it that they are incapable of understanding it. When it's MN, bonus points for finding it "odd", "bizarre" and "baffling". (Even more bonus points for claiming it is in fact the actual collapse of society.)

Obviously, they still click on and engage with threads about it.

ScholesPanda · 25/02/2026 16:03

Whenever I read posts like yours, I always think they must be from a very strong person.

It must be hard enough to stick to a stringent set of rules for yourself, but then to add this need to force everyone else to live their lives in the same way and getting wound up when you realise they won't do, and you can't make them.

It must be exhausting being you.

Indeed. To misquote Darth Vadar, "the "Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells" force is strong in this one"

If people want a feeling of goodwill why don't they donate to a charity that actually does some good in the world instead of to a bunch of freeloaders?

People who actually buy stuff for these people must have more money than sense. And Tim Martin must be laughing at how easily he can con people into parting with their money.

Edited

You could as easily say why buy yourself a treat when people are starving elsewhere in the world? Why donate to an animal charity when actual humans are suffering? Why buy your mate a drink when they can afford to get one themselves?

People can spend their OWN money however they like. A pint in spoons is almost always less than a fiver, we aren't talking about world hunger solving amounts.

I don't think Tim Martin created the game!

scottishgirl69 · 26/02/2026 15:57

I personally do donate to charity. Always have
