AIBU to Serve Pancakes as Dinner Tonight?

It’s Shrove Tuesday, DS finishes at holiday club soon and I don’t think anyone is going to eat an entire dinner AND pancakes this evening so thinking of doing pancakes with a few healthy ‘bits’ on the side, possibly a few savoury pancakes. Lazy or justified?

More than fair and this is what my mum did every pancake day when we were kids. I loved it!

Jellybunny56 · 17/02/2026 16:40

We always did this as kids and it’s exactly what I’m doing tonight!

Amsylou · 17/02/2026 16:40

My mum never bothers so I feel I missed out. I feel more justified now!

Definitely justified. We're having pancakes for dinner too, not even savoury ones. They will be topped with fruit and maple syrup.

ReignOfError · 17/02/2026 16:43

I’ve always done this. I do savoury (possibly vaguely healthy) fillings followed by sweet ones.

Celiathebanshee · 17/02/2026 16:43

We don’t even bother with healthy bits. It’s just pancakes. One day a year!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 17/02/2026 16:44

We are only having pancakes for tea.

Tradition.

waitandfeed · 17/02/2026 16:44

My first pancake day with now DH I was horrified when he was wondering what we would have for dinner after our pancakes Grin only ever had pancakes on pancake day

Amsylou · 17/02/2026 16:45

Very happy to hear that this is the standard. Never had it as a kid and my DS has only recently started liking them so didn’t know the done thing!

Why would this not be okay? This place boggles my mind.

ThejoyofNC · 17/02/2026 16:45

I'm surprised you had to ask!

neverbeenskiing · 17/02/2026 16:46

Of course it's fine. Its only once a year!

Marylou2 · 17/02/2026 16:46

Definitely OK. I always do this.

HeadyLamarr · 17/02/2026 16:47

I thought that was what pancake day was for - eating pancakes instead of dinner

LightningMode · 17/02/2026 16:47

YABU to bother with "healthy bits" 😆

Why does it matter if it's "a done thing" or not? You get to decide the rules in your own home.

LittlePetitePsychopath · 17/02/2026 16:48

Not everyone does it that way, to be fair.

As a kid, we didn't have pancakes at all. I have friends who had pancakes for breakfast but not for dinner. Some people do have dinner first.

I do think that pancakes for dinner is probably the most common, though! It's what we're planning but I do have tacos ready incase DS or DD wants something extra.

Amsylou · 17/02/2026 16:48

Thanks all! I appreciate it’s once per year but I always think of pancakes as breakfast food or dessert.

I thought that was the point, to have pancakes for dinner. We eat well at all others meals, it won't kill us to eat pancakes tonight. There won't be a veggie in sight, as it should be.

tootyflooty · 17/02/2026 16:50

Sat at my desk drooling thinking of my pancakes tonight, with bacon and maple syrup topping, followed by a pancake with chocolate sauce and ice cream. I'm fully embracing Shrove Tuesday. 🤗

Lavender14 · 17/02/2026 16:55

I think it's part of pancake Tuesday op!! Ds had his pancakes this morning as I'm working late otherwise that would have been his tea tonight! I think it's fine as a treat!

ohtowinthelottery · 17/02/2026 16:56

Cheese and bacon pancakes for dinner here, followed by sweet pancakes - lemon and sugar or maple syrup. Done it that way for years.
We never have pancakes for breakfast though.

Shedmistress · 17/02/2026 16:57

I made veg pancakes with coleslaw and chippy chip chips for lunch and another pancake for tea; jam for him, cheese for me

Domino211 · 17/02/2026 16:57

We have pancakes for very meal on Pancake Day! Today we’re had fluffy ones with bacon and maple syrup for breakfast, ham/cheese/spinach for lunch and we’ll have them with potato curry for savoury dinner then crepe suzette or chocolate and cream for pudding. DH and I will then eat extra healthily for the rest of the week to make up for it, DSs are teenagers so can eat a monumental amount of food everyday 😂

Topseyt123 · 17/02/2026 16:57

I loved Shrove Tuesday as a child. Dinner was always just pancakes with lemon juice and sugar or golden syrup.

We survived and the sky didn't fall in. 😃
