AIBU to Serve Pancakes as Dinner Tonight?

It’s Shrove Tuesday, DS finishes at holiday club soon and I don’t think anyone is going to eat an entire dinner AND pancakes this evening so thinking of doing pancakes with a few healthy ‘bits’ on the side, possibly a few savoury pancakes. Lazy or justified?

The history of pancakes is to use up rich foods like fat, butter, and eggs before the Christian fasting period of Lent. They were seen as quite the treat, rather than an add on, or punishment dinner!

Thisisnotmyid · 17/02/2026 17:30

Pancakes here for dinner. Sausages, bacon and maple syrup alongside it

Secretseverywhere · 17/02/2026 17:32

I like savoury pancakes cheese, bacon and mushroom. I stick them in air fryer after filling to get cheese to melt. Then sweet. Pancakes for dinner is the best.

Kendodd · 17/02/2026 17:36

Are pancakes even unhealthy anyway?
It's eggs, flour, milk and a bit of oil.
We usually top with fruit or lemon and sugar.
What's wrong with that?

FcukBreastCancer · 17/02/2026 17:38

Mum always did savoury ones first.
Kids are keen just to go straight to sweet ones. I got lots of fruit so I guess it's ok.

I might have a waffle with smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion and spinach. Had similar at fluffy fluffy and it was lovely (chain pancake restaurant)

Breadcat24 · 17/02/2026 17:40

We always do one savoury one each as a note to it being dinner, then lemon and sugar until the mix is done.

TappyGilmore · 17/02/2026 17:40

I did. Why would you not?

Tisfortired · 17/02/2026 17:41

More than fine! It’s what my mum always did when we were growing up. Not everyone in this house likes pancakes (I know) so I usually do a small meal for tea and the pancakes as dessert. Tea tonight was a bowl of pasta pomodoro but sometimes I’ll do eg hot dogs or jacket potato.

TimetoPour · 17/02/2026 17:41

Yep. Pancakes for dinner, hold the healthy stuff. It’s one day a year. No fun day started with a salad.

If anyone is hungry later, they can have cereal.

I don’t think the copious quantities of sugar/nutella that always got eaten in my house could be described as healthy! They had free access to the fruit bowl too though - and we usually combined it all with a glass of milk or a milky hot chocolate.

namechanged3210 · 17/02/2026 17:56

We normally do that! This year we’re having chicken burgers too, as I can’t be arsed to make enough pancakes to be filling as the only thing. So we’ll have a burger then a pancake or two with fillings.

Ilovepastafortea · 17/02/2026 17:59

People of my era will remember the 'Little Black Sambo' book when after the tigers had chased each other around a tree & turned themselves into butter his mother gave him a huge plate of pancakes. I always wanted a huge plate of pancakes like that & every Shrove Tuesday that's exactly what my DCs had. I'd make a pile of them, kept warm over a pan of boiling water. We'd have them with cheese & tomato to start with & then lemon & honey - YUM. 😍

whatsit84 · 17/02/2026 18:01

We did/do this. It’s one meal, and it’s fun! Pancakes are really filling!

ThisYearIsMyYear · 17/02/2026 18:03

Never heard of anyone having pancakes and dinner. Seems like having two dinners to me. I think we just had orange/lemon juice and sugar as children but when my own were growing up I did bacon and maple syrup as well, plus fruit and ice cream for those with staying power. There are lots of less healthy dinners you could have, though probably no one here will admit to serving them.

BlackCat14 · 17/02/2026 18:04

We always did this as kids growing up, I assumed everyone did until I went to uni and my housemates cooked their dinner and THEN made pancakes. We always had a load with lemon and sugar and our final one with ice cream and chocolate sauce!
Now my boyfriend has just lemon and sugar, but I have a couple with blue cheese and salad, and then a couple with M&S blonde spread. Yum! No “proper” meal needed!

Topseyt123 · 17/02/2026 16:57

I loved Shrove Tuesday as a child. Dinner was always just pancakes with lemon juice and sugar or golden syrup.

We survived and the sky didn't fall in. 😃

Same.

My DC are spoilt though as have chocolate spreads, fruit and savory toppings over the years as well as traditional one above.

Today we started with mushrooms and bacon on pancakes then had syrup chocolate spread bannana kiwi fruit and blueberries and some cream.

user2848502016 · 17/02/2026 18:09

That’s what we always do on pancake day!

LadyCrustybread · 17/02/2026 18:17

Isn’t that the whole point of pancake day? To have pancakes as dinner?

popcornandpotatoes · 17/02/2026 18:21

I don't really understand the question tbh, is this not what you are supposed to do on shrove Tuesday? I guess some people have them for breakfast but most people wouldn't have the time

itsgettingweird · 17/02/2026 18:24

The only “healthy bit” on my pancakes will be stewed apple.

But that’s only because I love stewed apple, caramel sauce, caramel/fudge pieces and squirty cream!

Its definitely not an attempt at being healthy - rather a coincidence really 🤣

Freshcoffeeonly · 17/02/2026 18:26

Double pancakes for us.

American style fluffy ones with maple syrup bacon and mushrooms first then good old fashioned crepe style with lemon and sugar or Nutella/strawberries/meringue for puds.

Its what pancake day is for.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 17/02/2026 18:32

I had pale, soggy, lumps as a pud after dinner when I was a child.
Never wanted them since !

Amiunemployable · 17/02/2026 18:36

See, DH reckons you have pancakes for pudding on pancake day. AND still have a normal dinner.

I was brought up just having pancakes for dinner. Some with nutella and some with lemon and sugar.

So that's what me and DS have done tonight. Just pancakes! And DH had a normal dinner and 1 pancake for pudding!

Sahara123 · 17/02/2026 18:36

I was starting to think I am a complete glutton as I’ve just had chilli and rice, and am about to have pancakes with lemon and sugar! But then I thought about it, I’ll have maybe 3-4 crepes and there’s no way that would fill me up on their own so I’ll stick with them as dessert 😋

Amsylou · 17/02/2026 18:38

I love all these replies. Thanks for making my evening. DS was thrilled we had pancakes for tea!
