Valentine's meal deal...people have become so shameless.

AIBU to think that people have become shameless, selfish and greedy?

I noticed the Asda Valentine's meal for two offer earlier this week: starter, main, two sides, pudding, and a bottle of wine, all for £12 quid. Amazing deal really and a nice idea for a night in together.

Went back today to get it... Absolute hoards round the fridge, loading their trollies with multiples meals worth, everything times five or six... scrambling for all the best dishes. By the times I got to the fridge there was hardly anything left.

Am I being unreasonable, or have people always been like this?? I'd be embarrassed to do that, but no-one seemed to care.

I think it’s kind of fair to buy up a good deal, whether it’s for an occasion or not. People seem to have the same idea because there was a 96p ring in a heart shaped box which is completely sold out. I wonder if any will be used for engagements later in the year!

That poster is going through something shattering. You can choose to ignore it if that's better for your equilibrium.

Just have a bit of heart.

It is turning the convo to them, though.

Not really. Given what that poster is going through, how hard is to just give them a break for posting a brief comment on a 'lighthearted' thread?

I cannot believe that posters want to stick the boot into someone going through something so heartbreaking.

Must be Love Island

Are you discriminating against polygamous relationships, OP? 😆

It's a bit sticky, I don't disagree with you, but it is a bit strange to do that. It's derailing, really.
I don't disagree that person is in an awful place, but to go onto lighthearted threads and dump.... is, self-centred 🤷‍♀️

ShesGotAPlan · 14/02/2026 03:02

This can’t be serious. 🤪

I bought a few of these meal deals from another supermarket. Supermarkets should limit them if they’re bothered. Or maybe people should have to sit a test which proves they have a partner and will be eating their valentines meal with them, and single people or those not celebrating valentines shouldn’t be able to buy them. 🤪🤪🤪

The deal in my Asda was not processed ready meals it was great cook from scratch foods. Prawns in breadcrumbs, rump steaks, garlic new potatoes and chantenay carrots. The pudding was a processed sticky toffee pudding admittedly. Really enjoyed it. So went back and bought it again!

Breaded prawns are processed!

As are the potatoes!

Hippee · 14/02/2026 03:40

The Co-op one is amazing - £10 with a membership card - for one of their Truly Irresistible meals, 2 sides and a bottle of Prosecco. A friend asked me to get her the steak one and it saved over £12.

Oneandanotheroneistwo · 14/02/2026 05:59

I shop online from Asda and was impressed yesterday that I actually got everything i ordered on the valentines meal deal - on the couple of occasions I've tried before they've either substituted heavily or not sent anything. Tbf It was a really good deal - I wasn't going to bother and just get steak for dinner tonight, but decided to chance it for a few quid extra and go for the meal deal and get a starter, sides, dessert and wine too. No brainer really. Don't blame people of stocking up.... kind of wish I had too 😆

BoudiccaRuled · 14/02/2026 06:06

Nothing says romance like a cheap ready meal from ASDA.
Where is the imagination and effort?! I used to get handwritten poems (copied out of books, admittedly🤣).

DeftGoldHedgehog · 14/02/2026 06:19

It's not greedy unless they are eating all these dinners in one night between two people.

If you expect that after the initial honeymoon phase in a relationship you've got another think coming. Many people see Valentine's Day as absolute nonsense. We see it as an excuse to go out for dinner as we like eating out, but it's bloody expensive.

For many people a posh ready meal is indeed as luxurious as they are going to get. And we certainly went down a similar route when the kids were small.

Oh nooooooooooooooooooooo! 😱

The people who worry about a portion of breaded prawns being ultra processed aren't shopping for ASDA ready meals.

Just pointing out they are processed, are you ok?

£12 for 3 courses and wine????

the ingredients must be really really shit, the taxes on wine alone would take most oc this amount, then the margin asda is making so can you kmagine how much £ is left for the food?

you would be better off not buying it. Nd cooking something simpler from scratch - and buy a £12 wine much much less crap

FFS. Really @Haffiana???

Let's hope you never find out then.

What a fucking post.

@hopes2409
My husband did die of brain tumours, left me with three children, two with SN. He was misdiagnosed, we'd sold our house, thinking we were making long term care plans. I regret that we put things off, we had future holidays planned, restaurantswe wanted to eat at etc. If people don't get the meal deal they wanted, they don't get back, this Valentines day. For many, that's their budget. Celebrating things together is important. I've got lovely memories of our Christmas eve and the Christmas period, to look back on.

Ninerainbows · 14/02/2026 06:43

I got mine on Tuesday - the error was leaving it until the 13th! I wouldn't really class most of the options as a ready meal. We had it last night and had the scallops then beer battered haddock with mushy peas. Was delicious.

It's already been explained it was a loss leader. The individual items for mine came to £27. They want people to go in for that then do a shop alongside it.

LlynTegid · 14/02/2026 06:47

People taking advantage of something that is, or that they think is, a good deal. Nothing bad in that.

Why they are on a low income, if they are, could be something you have contributed to, say by not voting or supporting the Tories in many elections.

Ponoka7 · 14/02/2026 06:47

@Bubblesgun one of the mains is lamb shanks, the jus has ingredients that you cook with. It's a loss leader. I got M&S meal deal, wagu pie, but steaks were on offer. The whole point is that it's something to make life a bit easier, for those who don't want to go out etc. This forum is going to get one big borefest if posters don't calm down about processed food.

Their point was both fair enough (in response to the non-issue presented by the OP) and understandable (in light of their own situation).

If an OP wants only validation rather than a range of normal human responses, they should vent to chatGPT which will tell them they are quite right and only getting potato side dishes is a terrible cross to bear.
