There are lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo and hippos in Africa, but when I lived there I did not have a house full of guns....

So you did not hunt nor target shoot nor kill off predatory animals which risked your livelyhood.

Helleofabore · 12/02/2026 11:05

Apparently, this guy used to post on social media about shooting and self reliance. His mother posted about him doing it too.

The 'transguns' sub-reddit temporarily suspended its board to remove this teenagers posts. There is speculation that he was one of the moderating team on that sub-reddit.

There’s having some appropriately-stored hunting paraphernalia and buying your unstable teen weapons.

Indeed.

The problem in Canada is that no professional councellor could have sat down and discussed his mental health or they would risk being ostracised, kicked out of their professional organisation and lose their job and get 10 years of harassment, look what happened to Jordan Peterson.

So all you have is affirmation and more affirmation. What he wants he gets or else.

Wot?

the editor was off getting coffee when the intern pressed upload or copy/paste/upload

It is unprofessional and clearly whoever originally wrote that placed the killer in the classification "victim" to have moved from killers/shooters/suspects mother

It's unprofessional - agreed. But it was clearly an error and its now been corrected in the article.

Helleofabore · 12/02/2026 11:14

I wonder whether merchandise like this will start disappearing. And whether the signs at protests that demand that people 'arm trans people' or 'arm the dolls' will now disappear.

These do not help people with already poor mental health, I would think.

Are modified handguns much use in seeing off marauding bears?

Tbf if you are under attack and by some miracle still had the capacity to engage a firearm a handgun is the better choice than a long barrel.
Bears are Usain Bolt fast or faster shooting something running at you and getting a kill shot is iffy. You want to hurt it enough that it will stop trying to kill you.

ProfMummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 12/02/2026 11:21

I notice this morning the BBC's story about police identify killer that the "male who identifies as a woman" bit has been moved from quite close to the start of the article to 10 paragraphs down about an hour ago. No she/her thank goodness, but down the truth goes.

Not even in the headlines on the BBC news channel anymore.

I do understand main stream UK culture is not familar with hunting or need for protection from wildlife and tends to be very anti guns but I image the Candian population including authorities may want to explore at what point do you step in with guns in house and mental health issues.

Reading this is does look like questions are being asked about guns and mental health support.

Police said they had attended the suspect's family home on multiple occasions over the past several years, with some calls related to mental health concerns.
...

Van Rootselaar was known to police, and "we've begun the process of reaching out to" the public health care system to "understand what interactions may have taken place," British Columbia Premier David Eby told a news conference outside the Tumbler Ridge town hall late on Wednesday evening.
The suspect previously had a valid gun licence that had since lapsed, McDonald said.
Police said Van Rootselaar had dropped out of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School four years ago.

A memorial of candles and flowers are laid at a vigil for victims of a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada.

Police identify 18-year-old as suspect in Tumbler Ridge shootings

A candlelit vigil was held on Wednesday night in the remote British Columbia town where six people were killed and dozens injured.

Presumably because the poster hates women and the mums of mumsnet

Its likely the lapsed was because the family /he was told it would not be renewed and likely this was part of the gun owner getting their guns returned/ licenced

I'm guessing because the poster thinks his mother was to blame for what he did, since women are responsible for what men do. Or at least are as bad as a mass murderer if they have a discussion that a misogynist doesn't like. One way or another, they're to blame.

It is a disgrace that the police have described this boy as female.

This is where this ideology leads to. The law in Canada forces the police to mis sex him.

Mentally ill boys and men who should be treated for mental health issues put on experimental drugs and told they are female.

If he had not shot himself he would be incarcerated in a women's prison.

You don't know that he was on meds.

likelysuspect · 12/02/2026 12:59

Bigcat25 · 12/02/2026 12:27

You don't know that he was on meds.

He might have been, he might not have been.

Either way the bottom line is, the treatment that he and other people like him (including girls who say they want to be boys), is not being given. They need the same support that an anorexic or someone with fantastical obsessive feelings needs, MH therapy to manage those feelings and change behaviour.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/02/2026 13:01

Bigcat25 · 12/02/2026 12:27

You don't know that he was on meds.

I was speaking generally not about the killer whose medical history I do not know.

However living in Canada and having been trans identified for several years according to reports is it likely he was.

So I absolutely stand by the points in my post.

Excellent and very thorough piece, from last year so it doesn’t include this shooting, the written article is partially paywalled but you can listen to the whole article narrated.

In other words, if women in Canada kill at the same rate as in the UK (and the figures seem to be roughly equivalent in developed Western nations), that[s around 80 people a year killed by women. This year that will be up to 90, a 12.5% increase.

Yes for 2021 (best data I could find) it was 83 female perpetrators (of which it’s possible one or more were men, given Canada’s approach to gender identity ideology).
