Is this too big a portion?

Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

If a grown adult couldn’t eat 5 fish fingers and 8 thin waffles fries as their main meal of the day then something is wrong with you. My toddler could probably eat most of that and still have room for yogurt and fruit after.

A 2 year old really.

You're talking nonsense and this is a good example of the overeating claims which come out on these threads.

Theres nothing wrong with people with smaller appetites or smaller capacities.

Your massive plates are distorting all sense of proportion. They're more like serving platters.

We’ve forgotten what a normal size plate looks like.

This is why we need the laugh reaction back 👏

I never thought my plates were so controversial! I added the fork for scales and thought it was obvious scale wise with the fish fingers

I generally eat to enjoy my food, rather than seeing it as something necessary to sustain me. I can’t imagine many people would eat a meal of plain white fish, sweet potato, and broccoli with a view to enjoying it. That’s the sort of meal my mum cooked me whenever I went to see her when I was pregnant😆. Even with your added luxury of mayonnaise and mustard, I couldn’t bring myself to eat a meal like that - it sounds revolting.

I honestly would enjoy that white fish, sweet potato and broccoli option. Admittedly maybe seabass, grilled with plenty of lemon squeezed over to finish, then sweet potato and tenderstem broccoli, perhaps with a sprinkle of toasted hazelnuts. Nuts and lemon juice can do a lot to brighten light dishes. I'd probably rather have normal potato with it instead, but could perfectly well enjoy the sweet.

What I would say is, even though we have been asked not to comment on the quality (no judgment op; we all have feed-me-quick nights), I do think it is kind of relevant to contextualise the portion size.

Had that plate had two fillets of seabass (which is more fish than is there) and then a baked potato equivalent to the waffle things if they were actually stacked in a pile rather than spread like a carpet and with holes in them, then if the veg was a nice fresh pile of leafy tenderstem broccoli, it would probably have as much or more food but would seem perfectly ok. I think its because there is quite a lot of breadcrumb and upf-y potatoes that makes it look a big meal. I think your brain is trained to baulk at amounts of less healthy food more than piles of healthy food. I'd happily eat the meal I just described and it is probably just as filling. So no, op, I don't think that volume-wise it is massive when I look at it that way.

soupyspoon · 06/02/2026 12:51

It really comes to something when the narrative is being driven to people 'justifying' or explaining why a) they like a particular food type and b) when that is non processed or UPF food trying to explain 'its really nice'

Since when is it a surprise to someone that fish and some veg is very nice?

I mean I don’t like lamb or KFC but I get why other people would!

I know I don’t overeat as I count my calories (for macros to do with the gym not weight loss), have a healthy BMI and I am a size 8 but these threads really have me questioning myself.

That’s not really a meal I would ever really eat but if I did I would take away one of the fish fingers and the veg and add half a tin of beans and a slice of bread.

DH would have the same amount of fish fingers, more potato fries, half a tin of beans and two slices of bread.

We do usually eat a lot of veg but having steamed veg with fish fingers is a no go from me!

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 06/02/2026 13:27

It depends how much you have eaten so far.

If this is your first meal for several hours then it is fine. If you ate an hour ago then it is a lot.

YesSirICanNameChange · 06/02/2026 13:30

That looks banging.

You need some super cheap, super processed white bread and some salty butter, make a fish finger sandwich, perfection 👌

Haven't RTFT but are the "it would take me SIX WEEKS to eat all of that because I'm so teeny tiny I fall down drains" lot at it again?

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 06/02/2026 13:30

I wouldn't eat fried potato things. No nutritional value. Would do 2 fish fingers and the veg and it would be enough. Thats really a lot of food especially for such little value.

pestowithwalnuts · 06/02/2026 13:33

Your tired so your body is needing fuel.
You need something warm and comforting.
Get it down you girl.x

Tripe, liver and kidney

And in truth, trout and beetroot have a bit of an earthy taste that I dont like, same with eel but I will eat beetroot in vinegar and smoked trout and eel.

I love liver and kidney. Haven't had tripe for years but used to love that too. Also like trout and beetroot but have never tried - and never will try - eel!

Yesss! I really wish they’d bring this back. The flowers / sympathy are nice. But we also need the laugh reaction.

Biscuit wouldn’t hurt either… but they’re not really in use anymore! (Or I might just keep missing them…)

Why would a potato have no nutritional value? Do the potatoes you use not have vitamins or carbohydrates in them?

ABrownMouse · 06/02/2026 14:13

I normally just sniff the fish fingers and use my imagination for the chips to leave room for pudding (a lick of an apple)...but you do you

You should be sniffing unbattered, no UPF white fish instead, don't you understand how many calories and UPFs you're inhaling?

Snails and frogs legs, have you had those? I like those.

Ive had sweetbreads which were very nice. Hearts are 'ok'.

Oh tongue, dont like that.

Womaninhouse17 · 06/02/2026 08:54

P.S. I've just looked at my packet of fish fingers and it suggests 3 fish fingers for a serving.

And tube of smarties claims to be 2 portions 🤷🏻‍♀️

That would be about 200 calories and 9-10g of protein. Hardly a meal.

myglowupera · 06/02/2026 14:31

I’m a healthy weight and I think that portion is absolutely fine.

Ilovelurchers · 06/02/2026 14:51

I wouldn't eat that much, but my appetite is relatively small for an adult human. I know plenty of "normal" adults who would eat this much - it doesn't appear comment worthy to me.

Would you like to lose weight, OP? I only ask because you mentioned being over weight a few times.

If you would like to, reducing portion size is, in my experience, the best way to do so. You can faff around with fad diets, what you are eating, when you are eating it etc, all you like. But to lose weight you need to ingest fewer calories, and the easiest and most pain-free way to achieve this is to still eat the things you like, just less of them.

Not saying you have to. It's totally up to you. And I have no idea how you are defining "over weight", obviously.

It's actually really nice.

I wasn't suggesting other meals for @fishfingergate - I was pointing out that a much healthier (and far more satiating) version of her meal is as easily made as her fish fingers etc. I love fish fingers, but there's not much too them.

Fish fingers are white fish; sweet potato is nutritionally much better value for calories than UPF potato waffles; I prefer broccoli to sweetcorn & peas - so that bit of the meal is swappable!

All I was saying is that a much healthier & no UPF version of her meal is as easily made, as the OP mentioned it was the end of the week & she was tired.
