Is this too big a portion?

Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

Do you know what actually is a mumsnet thing to do? Pile on people that have a different opinion to you and tell them they are wrong, have an eating disorder and are smug boasters.

Honestly, it’s pretty dull to read so many responses that refer to people’s bmi, choices and obvious disorders.

People come in different sizes / activity levels : ages / sex / lifestyle / preferences. A little comprehension of what is right for you might not be right for someone else would go a long way.

That’s why these threads are pointless really, I’d eat that and more for my dinner but bar Christmas Day I haven’t had a pudding since I was a child.

You've actively chosen to not have dessert your whole adult life?

Why?

What do you do when someone invites you to dinner, just sit there while everyone else has theirs? Never once gone out for tea and cake etc?

I just don’t really like sweet stuff. It’s not an ‘active choice’ so much as ‘why would I choose to eat something I don’t really like’? It’s nothing to do with wanting to save calories, I eat plenty. I just eat the stuff I want to eat. If we were eating out I’d opt for a cheese board if everyone else was having a pudding. It’s never been an issue though, when I go out with friends there’s always some who have starters, some who don’t, some who have puddings, some who don’t etc.
ETA I don’t drink tea 😂, so no to the tea and cake. I’d eat a slice of cake if it was impolite for me to refuse, but that’s never really happened. I think it would be weird to regularly eat something I don’t like though.

So why do you have dessert at Christmas? If you don't like it.

BlimeyOReillyO · 06/02/2026 07:37

You'd mentioned previously a yoghurt or fruit, which made your calorific intake very low. You now said apple crumble and chocolate!

And no one is “having a go at you”, just wondering how you get your calories.

Obviously from puddings and chocolate!

Not from puddings and chocolate (2 squares of very dark chocolate) but from my overall intake each day. Pudding is often plain yogurt with stewed unsweetened fruit. But I obviously get enough calories because I'm the right weight for my height, am fairly active and don't lose or gain weight.

Boomer55 · 06/02/2026 08:10

I couldn’t eat that amount, but everyone’s appetite is different. I’ve got a very small appetite. 🤷‍♀️

Like I said, I’ll have something if it’s impolite not to. Christmas Day is the only day really that everyone around me is eating a pudding, so I’ll have a bit. Not sure why it bothers you so much that I don’t like desserts and wouldn’t choose to eat them. Like I said, I eat plenty. I lift weights and am very active so it takes a lot of calories to maintain my weight. Just not from pudding, because I don’t really like it.

GalaxyJam · 06/02/2026 08:14

I also don’t like fish fingers so wouldn’t eat the meal in the OP, but in terms of portion size it’s on the small size for me.

RampantIvy · 06/02/2026 08:23

There are a lot of sanctimonious posts as well. Anyone would think that from the carb phobic posts that carbs contain arsenic.

For the record, I don't think this is too large or too small a meal. I'm 5'7" , not overweight and nearer 70 than 60 and still pretty active.

What a weird question.

Do you regularly eat stuff you dont like?

What do you think people do if they're too full up after dinner to have afters, they dont have any and other people might have some, so what? Or like me I might have a coffee as Im not keen on desserts as a whole.

Winederlust · 06/02/2026 08:32

Probably one less fish finger for me but couldn't eat any of it without sauce!

Well apparently it’s because you’ve got disordered eating, you’re competitive undereating and eat like a small bird.

If there’s any disordered eating on this thread it’s not from those with a smaller appetite..

wishingonastar101 · 06/02/2026 08:43

That is a lot of unhealthy food.

I would eat less than half of that.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 06/02/2026 08:44

I couldn't eat it because of acid reflux but that's a normal portion and I have a BMI of about 20 at the moment.

I'd have cucumber and sweet chilli sauce with fish fingers - it gives it a Thai feel :).

I've not seen any sanctimony or phobias here. Not wanting a lot of carbs isn't a phobia. Eating a lot or not much isn't being sanctimonious. People are mostly just expressing their personal preferences.

You don't think the post two above yours is sanctimonious?

This isn't a meal I would normally eat either, but one unhealthy meal as a one off if the diet is normally healthy and well balanced isn't going to kill you.

I think we’ve lost sight of what a normal portion of fish gingers is 🤣 (joke, eat as many as you like, I’ll wait to be told I’m a competitive underwater and for someone to refer to this as upf crap…)

Fish fingers 🙈😂😂😂 that cheered me up. Had a rubbish morning!

Sorry - I hadn't seen that one. So many comments, so little time... Yes, that is sanctimonious. But not necessarily carb phobic.

Womaninhouse17 · 06/02/2026 08:54

P.S. I've just looked at my packet of fish fingers and it suggests 3 fish fingers for a serving.

PeasePuddingPottage · 06/02/2026 08:56

Fish gingers! 😹

MidnightPatrol · 06/02/2026 08:59

I can’t believe anyone truly believes an adult portion of fish fingers is two.

depends what else you've eaten in the day.
The packets give the calorie count etc for 3 fish fingers as if that is the norm in a box of 6.

It’s three. That’s ample

Depends what you have with them and what you’ve eaten the rest of the day.
