Wonder If it’s a minority or majority stake she’s selling.

And wonder if she’s selling a part to eg Australia to “franchise”. It’s evident that the local market is where the money is because that’s where people spend the most time and engage most energetically (politics, health, national news etc).

My lips are sealed.

Have you tried WD40?

I've been on 2 forums that were sold, both of them died a death within months and are now ghost towns. It's never the same once a forum is sold.

Same. I was on a fantastic parenting forum that was sold to Disney, years ago, and it just withered and died.

Not forgetting his cousin, Ivor Biggun. 😐

There are ways of expanding internationally that do not require private equity investment, eg franchising.

This is the owner(s) planning an exit, clearly.

FairPearlSnake · 01/02/2026 17:39

Maybe by the same people who have bought TikTok in America. Leading to a considerable spike in the rate of app uninstalls.

If it goes Stateside, I can imagine that will happen here.

Look at it this way. Current users could get all “it used to be so much better!” like some now who go on about the ‘old days’ when the site was smaller, wittier, friendlier, sooo much more intelligent etc etc. In other words a great opportunity for feeling superior.

(I was a frequenter of MN many years ago and it used to be full of terrible snobs and unfunny in-jokes. There were some fucking obnoxious posters then too.)

I experienced this once, but in this case the forum was only a small part of the brand which was sold. The new owners didn't understand the forum, found it a bit controversial and eventually shut it down. It was a shame because it was a large and thriving international community. The previous forum managers understood the need for allowing off-topic discussions for the sake of building an online community where many people wanted to spend their time.

The brand did not perform well under its new owners and was sold yet again at a massive loss.

A couple of phrases spring to mind; "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "do not remove a fence until you know why it was put up in the first place".

I don't for one minute think this will be good news for MN users.

No

Ju stine would sell and lose control.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 01/02/2026 17:42

A local Facebook group was recently sold (not sure how you can sell a Facebook group but they did), it's now turned into just adverts for businesses. It used to be great for discussions and recommendations.

Digital Spy went downhill really quickly when they started fiddling with it.

Can see any investor with a large enough stake wanting a say on how this is run and contents.

snoopyfanaccountant · 01/02/2026 17:42

I was part of an amazing online community many years ago called "Raising Kids". It was sold to Disney and ultimately folded.

Ill give Justine £4.50 for it all. My name isn't actually furniture either.

We could all chip in, apparently there are several million of us, like the Rochdale pioneers...but not all in Rochdale. Shareholder meetings in AIBU will be a bunfight.

Interesting, I wonder how that will affect user experience.

None of the words in my user name are my name either. Just in case Grin

How is Patricia, did she take the quiche in the end 😂

My nn might be Bunny 🤔

£9million profit and they can’t moderate properly. 🤔 Might be the much needed incentive for me to leave.

I'm surprised it has taken this long to be honest, it's had a very good run of 25 years. I will change my feelings about it. Although according to that article I have aged out of the demographic anyway!

FYI not an egg.

Same, dd is 25yo so have been here ages and older than most according to that article

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/02/2026 17:29

Interesting.

According to accounts filed at Companies House for the year ended December 31, 2024, Mumsnet recorded turnover of £9.4m, a year-on-year rise of almost 20%.
Post-tax profit was up 14% to £2.65m, while users spent a total of 45.7 million hours on the site - a rise of 6.5%.
Among the new products it referred to was the launch of MumsGPT, an AI-driven consumer insights tool.
One source said the sale of a stake in the business was expected to provide capital to facilitate an international expansion strategy for Mumsnet.

So it's being flogged to private equity to sell products and data on women's political opinions, relationship issues, domestic violence, experiences of sexual assault, miscarriage, terminal illnesses, fertility and family planning and as a resource for AI.

Absolutely spiffing.

Yes, I looked at them too. Did you look at the holding company as well?

Perhaps the new owners will pay for overnight mods.

If only.

I rarely post nowadays, but this has been asked for consistently for I would ay a decade or more.

Surprised the site has got away with not having paid night mods.

I worry that this will mean more adverts and more censorship. What a shame.

It's really really hard to imagine more adverts.

quantumbutterfly · 01/02/2026 17:43

JillyJoy · 01/02/2026 17:26

Why on earth would such a group want it/us.
I read that Justine is negotiating with a private equity Group for part sale.
Perhaps this is why we have had so many more ads, including the full page ones.
Fattened up and taken to market.

moo.
