I experienced this once, but in this case the forum was only a small part of the brand which was sold. The new owners didn't understand the forum, found it a bit controversial and eventually shut it down. It was a shame because it was a large and thriving international community. The previous forum managers understood the need for allowing off-topic discussions for the sake of building an online community where many people wanted to spend their time.
The brand did not perform well under its new owners and was sold yet again at a massive loss.
A couple of phrases spring to mind; "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "do not remove a fence until you know why it was put up in the first place".
