It’s the potential censorship that’s the main worry isn’t it? Particularly around women’s rights.

That’s my concern. I’d worry that new owners might not like women expressing opinions about things like what a woman is.

SwedishEdith · 01/02/2026 17:18

I'm half expecting it to be bought by a po-faced American owner that censors swear words and user names.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 01/02/2026 17:19

I don't think it's worth worrying about what it might be like.

Better to cross that bridge when we have more info.

I'm surprised there's been nothing from Justine in Site Stuff though?

I would assume international means American. If it doesn’t, she could come out and say so.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 01/02/2026 17:20

I think the usership needs to be sensible. This is not a public utility. It’s a private business. If JR wants to raise a few quid and put her feet up, good luck to her. If MN gets more highly moderated and more commercial, well it was nice while it lasted.

Mikehunt2018 · 01/02/2026 17:09

I miss the old emojis. The one you've used looks like someone wearing a face mask.

You can still use the old ones Smile

Alltheyellowbirds · 01/02/2026 17:21

I do wonder whether some of the less enjoyable changes over the past few years have been done with a future sale in mind.

Freya1542 · 01/02/2026 17:21

Info here, should it be of any interest

eta; @Mikehunt2018 already posted this link, apologies

beigeybeige · 01/02/2026 17:22

This is shit news.
gutted they will be cashing in like this.
MN can be an essential support service to people.
If someone is paying millions to buy it it’s because they think that can make those millions and more off all of us users.

consideting we all provide the content I think MN should be left as a charity to run as a not for profit. The owners make a couple of
million clear profit off it a year already

Otherwise I hope someone else builds a chat site aimed at mums that’s going to take security very seriously and be free to users who provide the content.

AlbieJiggered · 01/02/2026 17:22

(oh and Mike isn't my name. It's a play on words) Well I'll be jiggered! Who'd have thought?

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 01/02/2026 17:22

I’ve only just reregistered after the ‘cookies or payment’ fiasco, and I’ll definitely be considering my position, as politicians used to say in the days when they had a modicum of morals, depending on how transparent they are about new leadership.

PS For the avoidance of any doubt, I am not Paul Whitehouse Smile

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 01/02/2026 17:23

Ill give Justine £4.50 for it all. My name isn't actually furniture either.

Mikehunt2018 · 01/02/2026 17:24

My name is not Susan 😎

OP posts:
EchoedSilence · 01/02/2026 17:25

I imagine it was to be done on the quiet with little information for MN users.

If American, the interest may well be significantly political. Socials like this are sought after for the ability to influence and change or seek to change views.
Making money might be an element. But fundamentally, the personal data, the views expressed, that info is what is wanted.

Kryten, is that you?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/02/2026 17:25

I hope it's not the Daily Mail. They bought and ruined Charlotte Street (speaking of user names) which was much like Mumsnet and which eventually morphed into the very unpleasant femail.com.

If it is, I'll be out.

Why on earth would such a group want it/us.
I read that Justine is negotiating with a private equity Group for part sale.
Perhaps this is why we have had so many more ads, including the full page ones.
Fattened up and taken to market.

BlessedCheesemaker · 01/02/2026 17:26

I would absolutely love to see more advertising posts and AI generated content. Also more of a forum for bored party political types to start dubious scaremongering threads and stuff 🙌💫🎉

SkelatorIamNot · 01/02/2026 17:26

Watching this with interest, Mumsnet had evolved massively over the years and this will just be another development.

I’m not Skelator

The thing is "I’ve only just reregistered after...." is a tale as old as time on Mumsnet so they know that no matter what they do to the site, loads of people will be back regardless.

ProfessorBinturong · 01/02/2026 17:27

She's entitled to, of.course, but it's almost certainly going to mean a change of character if it's run be people who primarily saw the potential of profit rather than the potentional to fill a need.

(I'm not a binturong. Or a professor.)

cleaningthebog · 01/02/2026 17:27

YABU to think that we thought your name was Mike. Oh dear.

JillyJoy · 01/02/2026 17:27

We might get the Sex Chat Thread back.

JustauseraskinganotheruserWTF · 01/02/2026 17:28

I've noticed some American forum(isms?) creeping in (32F 38M, etc) and I don't like it! I was on a wedding forum predominantly based in the States and it just didn't reflect me. The forum is fantastic for sign posting users to things and giving relevant advise (benefits etc) if we start getting (albeit well intentioned) comments from allover the globe it'll just get so confusing!
Plus also I wouldn't like my data selling, thanks.
