I try knickers on in shops.

My other thread got derailed by this issue.

I, and the friends I saw last night, all try knickers on in shops. We do this over our pants.

We sometimes buy the knickers. We sometimes don't.

We agreed we don't have money to burn on buying knickers that don't fit or don't look lovely or cut your bum up. We try them on as most shops don't allow you to return them for a refund. (Although you can return online)

To clarify from my other thread, the JL shop assistant told me to try on the matching knickers to a bra I was purchasing, as she didn't want me to waste my money.

AWBU in trying knickers on in shops and sometimes returning them to the rail?

(And yes, this is one of those threads where my behaviour will not change as a result of your opinions)

Narcissism is when people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance,

I was thinking very much of the myth about Narcissus: seeing his reflection in the pool and falling in love with himself because he looked so beautiful.
That's what sprang to mind when OP talked about looking at herself in the changing room mirror and thinking how lovely she looked in a pair of knickers.

when I've dressed up in something that really suits me and put some makeup on and done my hair I do look in the mirror before going out and think 'yeah, I look really pretty today'.
I think that's reasonable. And vastly different from what you posted earlier about looking in the mirror and thinking you look beautiful and gorgeous.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with looking in the mirror and thinking you look beautiful or gorgeous!

It's a matter of opinion.

I certainly wouldn't want to have to interact with any one who was so vain. Vanity is a very unappealing character trait

It’s not vain to think yourself attractive. What an odd opinion.

That's what you said in your previous post.
And it is vastly different from what you are now saying which is talking about thinking you are " attractive" for heaven's sake!

The first thread was my disgust at a man in a changing room whilst I'm having a bra fitting.

It got derailed by trying on knicker talk.

I wish I hadn't mentioned trying on the matching knickers in the previous thread, as it meant people didn't hear how vulnerable I felt knowing that my breasts were repeatedly exposed a metre away from an unknown man with only a badly fitting curtain for protection.

Well clearly there shouldn't be a man in there and you should complain and/or boycott.

And John Lithgow can go fuck himself if he thinks otherwise, he's never going to be affected is he, the silly wanker. Just another common or garden misogynist who thinks that it's fine for women to be raped in prisons and hospitals by men who say they are women. He'd fucking keel over if a white person insisted on identifying as black.

That said, if knickers were meant to be tried on, they would have a plastic protective strip. They don't and you can't return knickers for the very reason that you may have tried them on. I'm surprised that you are surprised that other people don't do this, and honestly it comes across a bit goady and gloaty that you are taunting posters that they may have bought something with your bodily fluids on.

That’s just semantics. Thinking yourself attractive is no different to thinking yourself beautiful or gorgeous.

That's disgusting

I’m still interested in how it’s different to trying on a pair of leggings in a shop - which I’ve definitely done myself…

There is a world of difference.

It's the difference between those who are quietly confident in how they present themselves and those who are totally vain and egocentric.

Thinking you look beautiful isn’t vain! You’ve got some very odd ideas. Are you from a generation that frowned upon women with good self esteem?

I think good self esteem is very important and actually vital in order to have a happy, successful and fulfilled life.

But looking in the mirror and knowing you have made the best of your appearance before you leave the house is so vastly different from looking in the mirror and thinking" aren't I beautiful". That is nothing to do with self esteem and everything to do with ego and vanity. And an attitude that smacks of superiority.

No wonder everyday life is so difficult these days with all the self obsessed people in it expecting others to kowtow to them because they are so beautiful- in their own estimation at least.

I can't believe that any one would try knickers on before they buy them.
And trying them on and returning them to the rail is just gross.

But there again buying knickers because they " look lovely" is just so self indulgent it's untrue. Just how vain are some people?

Knickers are knickers for heaven's sake. They serve a function.

So do you just wear a grey utilitarian boiler suit every day because it’s functional.

life is too short to wear ugly pants every day.

You've made a bit of a leap there haven't you ?

If your daily happiness depends on your choice knickers then it actually sounds quite sad.

BeanQuisine · 02/02/2026 13:53

Knicker wars still raging I see.

Molly bickers over knickers
With her mate who thinks she's grim,
Tries them on in Next and Primark
She don't care for manners prim.

She'll leave residues and skidmarks
On the poshest pair of drawers,
In John Lewis where the queue is,
Come and join the knicker wars!

Sorry but you said one of the reasons you tried the knickers on in the shop was because you wanted to ensure you looked lovely in them. That implies that you gave a very high opinion of yourself at the very least.

Not really no.

certainly implies you need nice knickers to make your day go well.

Not that it's of any importance here but I don't wear " ugly pants". I wear black sloggi knickers and have done for years . They may be boring but they are functional and not " ugly". So your jibe about " grey boiler suits" is a bit wide of the mark. Again, imo .

I mean, that’s what I do too. Why would I (or anyone) buy knickers that either didn’t fit or flatter my body?
If you don’t care what you look like then good for you. But if I’m spending a decent amount on knickers I want them to be right.

JayJayj · 02/02/2026 14:48

Some of these responses must be trolls surely. Either in the internet sense or looks. I can’t imagine any other reason why they’d be so upset because some women want to look nice in underwear! 🤷🏻‍♀️

thesecondmrsdewinter20 · 02/02/2026 14:52

If I’m buying nice knickers I’d try on over my pants. If I’m buying a multipack (more likely) I wouldn’t try on because you can’t really can you? In either case I’d always, always wash new knickers before wearing them. I once read about clothes being treated with formaldehyde and would never not wash new knickers after that.
