I try knickers on in shops.

My other thread got derailed by this issue.

I, and the friends I saw last night, all try knickers on in shops. We do this over our pants.

We sometimes buy the knickers. We sometimes don't.

We agreed we don't have money to burn on buying knickers that don't fit or don't look lovely or cut your bum up. We try them on as most shops don't allow you to return them for a refund. (Although you can return online)

To clarify from my other thread, the JL shop assistant told me to try on the matching knickers to a bra I was purchasing, as she didn't want me to waste my money.

AWBU in trying knickers on in shops and sometimes returning them to the rail?

(And yes, this is one of those threads where my behaviour will not change as a result of your opinions)

Please use the changing rooms, rather than the shop. 😬

Windowseleventy · 01/02/2026 11:24

That is actually disgusting. I don’t want your thrush thanks.

This intrigues me, how do you know the knicker buying habits of everyone you know?

Is it a question you ask your co workers, family, friends? Dont they think you're a bit of a weirdo? 😂

Well tbf i don't maybe everyone is doing it in secret and it is an unspoken thing😳

AwfullyGood · 01/02/2026 11:25

Ffs, some people just have no hygeine or common decency.

The pyjamas in public brigade.

Yes that’s me too. Life’s too short for assessing the look of knickers.

I’m a big fan of practical grundies. As long as they wash well, aren’t scratchy (no lace!) and keep everything in, I’m all good.

KimberleyClark · 01/02/2026 11:26

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 01/02/2026 11:21

You wouldn't try socks on. That's just 🤢

But some people think it’s fine to try footwear on in bare feet. That is no different IMO.

MTOandMe · 01/02/2026 11:26

I buy the packet ones if I’m getting them form a shop, those are for every day! If I’m getting nice things I only only order from Pour Moi and Figleaves online anyway so I just get my usual size! I’ll be honest, I’d wash knickers that were bought off hanger anyway so I wouldn’t be arsed if anyone had tried them on in the shop.

Yes, I was wondering this.

I can’t say I know whether any of my friends, family or random acquaintances try on pants before buying.

I’m with the others that say they’ll stick to packaged pants from now on!

fndshalom · 01/02/2026 11:27

Of course you do

And have a wide enough gusset. I remember buying a matching underwear set from Next and the knickers were wretched scratchy little scraps of material with a 1.5 inch wide gusset. They looked ok on the hanger.

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 01/02/2026 11:28

That’s gross. You seem keen to talk about pants so I call bullshit anyway.

Damnd · 01/02/2026 11:29

No this is grotty and can't believe people think this okay, discharge can leak through knickers, smells can transfer. Pls don't do this

Overtheatlantic · 01/02/2026 11:29

If I did, and to be clear I don’t, I wouldn’t tell anyone. Because I have a healthy sense of shame when I do things I shouldn’t do.

Why assume they have thrush, what a weird thing to say. Just because MN thinks everything under the sun causes thrush doesn't mean it's true!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/02/2026 11:30

...most shops don't allow you to return them for a refund.

There's a good reason for that don't you think?

pizzaHeart · 01/02/2026 11:30

Itiswhysofew · 01/02/2026 11:07

Hearing that, I'm so glad I buy pants in the plastic packs.

it’s easily to open plastic pack, take out one pair and then put it back, you just need to fold them in a certain way. I can do it easily.
Just saying.
I never thought if you are allowed to try on knickers or not. I don’t buy expensive ones so maybe the rules are different for them but I always wash knickers (and other things) after buying in case someone tried them on or they were on the floor etc.

I have recurrent thrush. I have had 3 doses of the 6 month course of fluconazole.

wanna take the risk of getting mine?

SwingTheMonkey · 01/02/2026 11:31

Presumably people wouldn’t try on a form fitting garment like leggings, either then?

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 01/02/2026 11:31

KimberleyClark · 01/02/2026 11:03

Would you be happy to buy a pair of knickers that someone else had tried on over their pants?

Yes… why wouldn’t she? People try all the other clothes on over their pants too. That’s how clothes work.

People on MN are so weird sometimes.

I mean... I don't try knickers on, but tbf people presumably try trousers and leggings on over their pants!

Coffeeishot · 01/02/2026 11:04

You seem overly keen to share your pant behaviour, couldn't you have not said this on your man outside changing room thread, i don't know anybody who tries on pants i buy them and wear them

Same. Order online from M and S. I know what suits me and fits me. I’ve never heard of anyone trying on knickers in shops

I'm assuming you didn't catch it from buying knickers that the op had previously tried on 🤷‍♀️

NuffSaidSam · 01/02/2026 11:32

As long as it's over the top of your pants I don't think it's any different to trying on swimwear. Crack on.

Oh, that’s bad. Who needs a poorly designed skivvies that don’t keep your flaps in?
I did have the opposite problem once, bought a three pack that had gussets like hammocks.
