I try knickers on in shops.

My other thread got derailed by this issue.

I, and the friends I saw last night, all try knickers on in shops. We do this over our pants.

We sometimes buy the knickers. We sometimes don't.

We agreed we don't have money to burn on buying knickers that don't fit or don't look lovely or cut your bum up. We try them on as most shops don't allow you to return them for a refund. (Although you can return online)

To clarify from my other thread, the JL shop assistant told me to try on the matching knickers to a bra I was purchasing, as she didn't want me to waste my money.

AWBU in trying knickers on in shops and sometimes returning them to the rail?

(And yes, this is one of those threads where my behaviour will not change as a result of your opinions)

I get it's not great and not hygienic, even tried on over pants, but also surely people wash them before wearing them anyway?

I don’t wash new knickers before wearing them. But they’re usually packaged, or else 3 on one of those M&S hangers, with thin plastic threads holding them together, so nobody could ever have tried them on.

I dare say some dreaded Pervy Bloke might have heavy-breathed on them though…😱😂

I'm assuming you didn't catch it from buying knickers that the op had previously tried on 🤷‍♀️

I have no idea where I caught it from. I’ve had it all my adult life.

im gonna start trying on knickers over my pants. It’s fine sure so it is.

🙄🙄🙄

No this is grotty and can't believe people think this okay, discharge can leak through knickers, smells can transfer. Pls don't do this

How do you approach buying leggings or trousers? You know other people will have tried those on and they'll have touched their dischargy knickers too? Are you skirts only? Make all your own clothes?

UncannyFanny · 01/02/2026 11:35

So let’s go a little further here. When exactly are you and your friends all doing this? Obviously there is a certain time of the month where you already know that even over your pants that’s a bit gross especially if you’re going to put them back for someone else to take home and wear. Personally I wouldn’t want to pay full price for knickers someone else has already opened then tried on over their own pants regardless when they did it because they will now be second hand and no longer unworn.

FourSevenTwo · 01/02/2026 11:35

I wash pants and Tshirts before wearing because of the residual chemicals, not because someone might have tried them

I belive shops should have some unpacked trying on pieces - especially if they sell several different colours of the same model, they can just have an example dor each cut and size.

Windowseleventy · 01/02/2026 11:36

trousers aren’t up in your crack like knickers. I’ve never tried on or worn a pair of leggings in my life.

I mean it literally is fine… there’s a barrier between you and the second pants. Presumably your thrush isn’t leaking through your underwear in which case no you shouldn’t ruin the shop’s merchandise with that in the same way that you shouldn’t blow your nose on a dress or shit in a pair of shoes.

But most women do not have active thrush nor are they wiping their infection on the pants they’re trying on over their own pants. You are someone who is unwell.. not the norm.

TwistedWonder · 01/02/2026 11:36

That’s nice dear 👍

She’s talking about pants that are on hangers and are fancier than 3 briefs in a packet that need to be opened. Obviously.

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 01/02/2026 11:39

People who think this is okay - I presume you’d extend the thumbs up to all pant styles, including thongs? You must be fine with people checking they go far enough up their arse crack?

FastFood · 01/02/2026 11:40

I have never felt the need to try knickers. It's not a wedding dress it's knickers ffs.

SevenYellowHammers · 01/02/2026 11:41

Do what you like. I couldn’t be arsed (literally!)

If knickers fit well they shouldn't be up your crack either! Perhaps you should start trying knickers on before you buy them, then you could get a pair that fit.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 01/02/2026 11:41

Hmm lets see.

Random comes along.

Name changes.

Starts not one, but two threads about knickers.

No, not dodgy at all 🙄

Overtheatlantic · 01/02/2026 11:42

And on a Sunday!

Justgorgeous · 01/02/2026 11:43

I always wash underwear before using it.

Beachtastic · 01/02/2026 11:43

KimberleyClark · 01/02/2026 11:03

Would you be happy to buy a pair of knickers that someone else had tried on over their pants?

I would, unless they had leprosy or syphilis and had wiped the sores all over their pants...?

Topseyt123 · 01/02/2026 11:43

I suppose that if you are trying on over your existing pants then that's acceptable. It's what I would do with swimwear.

Like some others, I only buy multipacks of pants/knickers. I just select my size, ensure the pack hasn't been opened, pay and go. I don't wash them before first wear either.

So no, I don't try pants on in the store. I'm not after the super-sexy, lacy thong like crap that often come as sets with bras and that you pay a ridiculous amount for. Those would drive me round the bend anyway as they seem designed to go up your arse crack. I just want good, comfortable pants and multipacks fit the bill perfectly.

GrassMarketeer · 01/02/2026 11:44

I've never even considered doing this or that others would. Please tell us what shops/chains you and your friends regularly buy from so others can avoid them.

Even though I wash underwear after purchase, I don't want to even skim past this stuff on the rails.

Suspect you are a troll though.

Uhghg · 01/02/2026 11:45

I don’t see the issue.

I try swimwear on as I have big boobs but a small waist and finding swimwear can be an absolute nightmare.

But I’ve never felt the need to try on underwear as I’ve never bought any that didn’t fit.
Maybe it’s the type you wear, I tend to wear ones that show some/most of my butt cheeks and so it doesn’t matter if they are slight smaller on bigger as they just cover slightly more or less.

Quine0nline · 01/02/2026 11:45

Surely one washes the new ones before wearing once bought? After all they will have been kicking around a factory floor.

shhblackbag · 01/02/2026 11:46

Does the internet need to know, though?

Americano75 · 01/02/2026 11:46

MrTwisterHasABlister · 01/02/2026 11:08

This is why I wash underwear before wearing it (unless packed in plastic etc).

Me too.

Shedeboodinia · 01/02/2026 11:47

I never used to wash new knickers, but now I will. Thanks for the heads up😂

I saw a pic circulated of a bloke doing much worse than breathing on them... 😲
