I can’t lie, Home Bargains. I just love it.

I already have every single supermarket (inc waitrose) within walking distance. On one particularly exciting day I timed myself to M&S food, 14 mins. I'm in sainsburys, m&s or waitrose every day.

I'd be lost without sainsburys.

Tbh I used to live nearly opposite a Tesco express. It was amazing just to pop over and get everything…from stuff I’d ran out of…for a lunch we fancied to getting a bit of chocolate when they mood took me 😋😋. Even if I’d just cleaned my house and fancied some flowers 🌷!!! Emergency cards, cheese, whatever!!!

whrn I first moved away, it felt like something was missing! I found I had to be super organised also at my weekly shop as there was no popping out now. But omg the costs I have saved is astronomical. I can’t pop out for anything. Can’t even fancy a meal deal anymore 😆. And the money it’s saved me is huge…so tbh I don’t wish I lived near any store based on that experience!!! Sure I can’t lie a supermarket would be “handy” …a tkmaxx would be a dream….but I know my purse is sooooo much better off not having everything on your doorstep!!!!

albeit if you’re elderly, it would be a godsend. My grandmother lived 25 years after my grandads passing. Unable to drive, she did use the buses to begin with but it became harder for her as got older and more frail. A little supermarket would have done wonders for her 😞

IKEA, for the meatballs. It's a 2 hour drive to IKEA for us.

I had these this week after about a 15 year gap. They were revolting, I couldn't finish them!
Wholefoods might be my choice if they are all like the one I went to in LA. Otherwise I'll make go with a Booths!

whatisforteamum · 31/01/2026 18:13

I live by Waitrose and Lidl is planned to go 5 minutes away.😁😁
I wish Dunelm or b and m would come here though

I don't this is right sadly. The ciabatta has emulsifiers doesn't it?

I live near a Lidl and it's handy for veg but I find the meat and most of their own brand stuff pretty shit. Bread is okish - similar quality to other supermarkets.

No, ciabatta is only allowed to be made with flour, yeast, water, salt, and extra virgin olive oil. Otherwise it has to be described as ciabatta-style. I'm in the EU though so it's possibly different in the UK, especially if suppliers have changed since Brexit.
I've been trying to improve our diet and had been thinking about getting a breadmaker so was pleased to discover over-the-counter bread.

M&S within walking distance or a market like Bury market within walking distance.

My nearest shop is Home Bargains (10 minute walk).

I live 15 minutes walk from M & S and 20 minutes walk from Bury market. 15 minutes from a Tesco Extra, 10 minutes from Aldi. All other shops, restaurants and cinema within 20 minute walk. One of the main reasons I live here.

sundayvibeswig22 · 31/01/2026 18:29

M&S. I currently live a 5-10 minute drive.

abathofmilkwithladydi · 31/01/2026 18:30

A Lidl, an Aldi, a Waitrose, and an M&S. No doubt

lljkk · 31/01/2026 18:31

Big supermarket. 1st choice = Sainsbury's.

ElizabethsTailor · 31/01/2026 18:32

We had to choose between two houses when we moved. Chose the one closest to Lidl (5 minute drive). Absolutely the right choice!

Hwart · 31/01/2026 18:37

M&S. And I do, I'm in there twice a day and it's great.

JMSA · 31/01/2026 17:47

Wait, some of them have cafes??

Yes Clifton Moor at York. 2 bacon buttiess and 2 lattes £7.40.
It's not the Ritz but nice enough.

Oh, that's really sad.

Tbh I probably only love the meatballs so much as it's such a novelty to go to IKEA!

Rayqueen2026 · 31/01/2026 19:08

Home bargains or B&M

Girasoli · 31/01/2026 19:08

I live a 10 minute walk from a big Asda with a chemist and opticians. It's super handy - can get food/clothes/birthday presents/small house stuff all in one place.

There’s a fabulous independent green grocer that isn’t quite in walking distance. Getting there is doable but they lugging the haul home isn’t.

I use my trusty shopping trolley. No one gives a shite or thinks it’s for old people only (which I am!). It makes SUCH a difference

Catladywithacat · 31/01/2026 19:14

With you on home bargains only if it’s a good one, bmn or the range. Also M n S

Ponoka7 · 31/01/2026 19:15

Not popular but, Primark. I live within walking distance of many of the shops mentioned and a short bus ride away from Dunelm and Matalan. I miss shops that no longer exist, the discount shops and the markets. We used to have a big, Outfit store (Arcadia group). The Wallis dresses used to go down to £15 in the sales.

Vetoncall · 31/01/2026 19:18

Waitrose definitely.

We're a 5 minute drive from an M&S Foodhall where we do most of our shopping, but we don't have Waitrose at all here in NI. I lived in England for 7 years with a big Waitrose 10 minutes drive away and I still really miss it. Every time I go to Edinburgh or England now I make sure I can get in at least one Waitrose visit!

no not the meatballs. The hotdogs are good and the frozen cinnamon buns are sublime.

Lucky, lucky you....oh to be able to nip into the market and buy something for dinner that day depending upon what's in season or what you fancy!

Crikeyalmighty · 01/02/2026 13:10

M&S food hall -

OttersMayHaveShifted · 01/02/2026 13:11

Ooh I said John Lewis, but I'd be very tempted by IKEA!

Mydogisagentleman · 01/02/2026 17:44

Dunelm, waitrose, john Lewis, big big big Mark's.
Me and DH went to a giant one in Peterborough. He loathes shopping, but was impressed by the household stuff

WhitePudding · 01/02/2026 17:47

Waitrose is sort of my corner shop with Lidl directly opposite -perfect combo!

That said, if it ever was feasible to move (which it’s not), I’d love to be close to the fabulous M&S at Cheshire Oaks. I’m a very sad person I know!
