I can’t lie, Home Bargains. I just love it.

I live 3 mins' drive from one branch of Booths and work round the corner from another Grin. I go there a lot, but never for a full shop, or I definitely would be bankrupt!

My closest is 40 minutes away. We only have occasion to head in that direction about twice a year.

Fodder in Harrogate is only 25 minutes away, so that's slightly more easy to get to.

Waitrose, just love it - apart from the prices!

For those who have said Lidl what do you recommend from there?
A local one has just opened and I've been in but couldn't find anything that I fancied, we've already got an Aldi.
I'd been told the bakery was amazing so I had a croissant and it was nice but no better than Morrisons.

I live within a minute’s walk from Lidl. They do fantastic offers on wine ( their Jammy Red is good). Have specials such as octopus, squid, Greek meatballs, and gorgeous pork belly. Their frozen sea bass is excellent too but it’s not available very often .
Their £2 veggie boxes are fabulous value and crammed full of fresh fruit and veg and most other stuff is cheaper than other supermarkets.
I make my own sourdough but theirs is also very good !
The only thing I wouldn’t buy are the fresh flowers as our local store doesn’t look after them and they’re usually looking dead by the time I get there .

John Lewis!

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 31/01/2026 14:50

M and S. I live in the countryside, a 50.minute drive from the nearest one. God I miss it, where I lived before it was a 10 minute walk.

I love the food Hall and I think the clothes are fab these days.

stickydough · 31/01/2026 14:50

Most practically, I’d love a little independent grocer type place that sells fruit and veg, wanky bread, free range eggs etc. And fresh salads and coffee to take away.

Id also love to live near a Toast shop!

ilovepixie · 31/01/2026 14:53

Harrods.

Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh.

I live less than 5 mins walk away from an M&S foodhall. It’s closing for 3 months at the end of February for a refurb. I don’t know what I’m going to do! I’ll have to plan ahead and use the car

It caused absolute chaos in our town when our M&S Foodhall closed for refurbishment!

I'd like to be walking distance to a full sized M&S for the clothes & homeware too.

I live next to a big Tesco . We did used to laugh we might aswell get our wages paid in Tesco vouchers , but then the cost of living hit and now I try not to go in that often and especially now the yellow reduced tickets are no longer what they used to be … we used to get the finest ready meals for 63p and my partner used to take them to work , our freezer used to be just yellow reduced labels 😂 it’s all changed now .

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 31/01/2026 15:04

I live pretty close to most shops tbh. I spend a lot of time in John Lewis and the big M&S.

But I’d pick Aldi because I hate lugging home a food shop.

CeeJay81 · 31/01/2026 15:08

Aldi, although i dont go often, as its 28 miles away. I live in a very rural place. 18 miles plus to anything other than coop or Spar plus a few independents and charity shops.

Tiptopflipflop · 31/01/2026 15:14

Wholefoods. Heaven.

Mithral · 31/01/2026 15:15

I'm 15 mins walk from a John Lewis with a Waitrose there too. And 10 from a big M&S food and a big Primark. 2 minutes from a Lidl.

Id like to be near a really great haberdashery, John Lewis used to be ok but now seems to be mostly kits and cricut stuff. Walkable to Selfridges would be fun!

Edited

Liberty can't come to Cornwall because I'm going to have it next to my house in Somerset.

I love it. Like a stylish museum full of the most uplifting and beautiful things.

Dollymylove · 31/01/2026 15:18

B&M or the Age UK chazza 😃

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 31/01/2026 15:18

I miss our local Aldi which was just a 5 minute walk away. We popped over several times a week to save us going to Tesco and spending a fortune! They moved the Aldi to an edge of town retail park. Sick of the good shops all being out of the way, I miss the days of big shops in the middle of towns when you didn't need to drive. Not very environmental friendly these retail parks! I would however love to live next door to M&S, the full shebang not just a foodhall. Would love a Waitrose close by too.

Booths. Although I'd be bankrupt within a year.

Ten minute walk from us - not bankrupt yet!

Greggs

I would be the size of a house if I lived next door to a Greggs. It's dangerous enough that they deliver now.

When DP's work moved to an office next to a Greggs, they all gained a stone and a half in the two years until they relocated again!

An entire office of people slowly inflating. 😄
