Jogger shoulder barged me today.

I was walking my dog this afternoon, when out of nowhere, a male jogger shoulder barged me. It was very intentional and my shoulder still aches now.

He carried on jogging, and we had the following exchange.

Me: excuse me! You just could have said excuse me!
Him: you took up all the path
Me: thats why you say excuse me! You wouldnt do that to a man.

He jogged futher on then said 'yes I would' and gave me the v's.

I live in a small village so likey to see him again. Should I report?

He was wearing a very distintive jogging outfit, but he kept his back to me, so I could not see his face. His legs were bare, so I could guess he was 60 plus as they were old man legs.

I feel like I was assulted!

The issue is when people don't leave any space for runners to go around them because they're ambling down the middle of the path. So I have to assess (at speed) whether I can squeeze through the gap (and if I get too close to them they huff), or whether I'll have to leap into a road or a ditch or slippery mud myself. (If I stopped to walk around everyone taking up the middle of the path then I wouldn't get to run at all, never mind any personal bests.)

Also, if I know I can't necessarily hear someone coming up behind me (I frequently run and walk with headphones in) then I firmly keep to the edge AND periodically look round to check, especially if I'm altering my course.

Really basic pavement etiquette to be mindful of others using the space and in what way they do so, but I get a huge vibe from both posters in this thread and people in real life that a lot of people just dislike runners (and cyclists) on principle.

People dislike runners and cyclists because they live a sedentary lifestyle and people that don’t make them feel slovenly. Basic psychology.

Would love to know how you came up with that theory? I walk minimum of 20k steps every day (not strolling either, walking at a fast pace) and go to the gym 3-4 times a week. Hardly sedentary 😂

My lifestyle is not sedentary, but I dislike it when SOME cyclists and runners see other road/pavement users merely as an inconvenience that gets in the way of their PB. It's a public pavement, not a racetrack! If it's too busy to run, you will need to slow down/stop for a moment.
I once had a runner get pissed off with me because she collided with me as she rounded a corner

Agree with this - nothing about slovenly

I wish they would just go the running track rather than expect to run round streets and park with no obstacles as if it’s the london marathon

Honestly never come across an inconsiderate fellow runner. Always perfectly respectful and willing to move to the opposite side when they see you coming towards them.

Definitely come across people walking side by side refusing to move when they see you coming. Sometimes I run around a park but I get so irritated by people, I can’t do it often. They know you’re coming and just make no attempt to move whatsoever so you’re forced to run in the mud on the side of the path and risk slipping.

Dog owners as well, they can be terrible for it. Their dogs aren’t trained well enough not to run straight at you and they seem to find it hilarious or cute or whatever but it really wouldn’t be if you fell and got injured or injured their stupid dog.

Sorry, I’m ranting because I know how infuriating people can be. Again, I’ll reiterate, I’d never get physical with anyone but can understand the rage as a fellow runner.

I get blocked from using a path in the nearby woods by Parkrunners who seem to think that congregating at the finish line across the breadth of the entire path is acceptable (about 12ft wide).

They don't always move on the first ask either, and often step backwards into me / my dog (whose lead I keep short near moving and stationary runners) because they're paying fuck all attention to anyone but themselves.

Bearing in mind it's a public footpath in the woods where loads of people walk, with and without dogs, I really wish they'd be less bloody selfish and unaware of their surroundings.

Parkrunners drive me insane and I say that as someone who parkruns and parkwalks 🤣.

I had a run in with a local park run once where runners trampled my (on lead) dog, literally ran over her as they’re so desperate trying to barge past on a narrow bit. Public footpath and no i wasn’t partaking in the park run. It was the inaugural run of a new parkrun so I’d had no idea it was going to be on. It was like being stampeded by a herd of bison! I had nowhere to go, ditch on one side and fence on another narrow 3ft path for hundreds of feet and I went as far to one side as I could off the path.

and yes hundreds of people at the start of another local one, totally blocking the path. Which is a cycle route, nobody moves at all if you cycle up to the group as they’re standing around. Ringing the bell and shouting cyclist coming and they stand there staring at you.

SingtotheCat · 30/01/2026 22:11

I am sorry this happened to you. How are you feeling now?
There was something wrong with that man. He did it on purpose after believing you were at worst a bit dozy and inconsiderate.
It was an assault, not an accident. I hope you feel ok.

bumptybum · 31/01/2026 07:30

ParmaVioletTea · 29/01/2026 21:13

But were you taking up all the path breadth? I do think we’re all have a responsibility in shared space to well actually share it.

You are someone who thinks aggressive acts of violence are appropriate when someone in your way? Even if someone was taking up too much space there is no justification for aggressively shoulder bashing them. Do you push people into the road and kick them off their bikes too? I hope this isn’t how you behave

Yes. The Met police are one of the most corrupt forces in the UK and i am certain they know who he was.

Possibly…but I wonder about the possibility of him being a tourist/short-term immigrant who has subsequently went back to his country?

That would explain why no-one recognised him or has spotted him out in public since, as I assume it was more a UK news story than a global news story.

Lolights · 31/01/2026 07:56

I’m not a runner myself but I agree with this @Sartre

I am currently dealing with some health issues that mean if a dog jumped on me I could end up in a lot of pain and possibly a visit to the a&e. It was pretty terrifying yesterday- I was standing outside my apartments waiting for an uber to take me to the local GP and already feeling poorly when I saw a huge dog bounding ahead of its owner and coming in my general direction.

I quickly went back in my apartment building just in case it ran at me! It was also stupid of the owner to allow that because the bit it was running on is like a wide cobbled street where many cars park and drive through.

I would add that a jogger shoulder barging me would be an issue to though, I don’t think that’s right but I have to say it’s never happened to me whereas dogs running at me/on me has happened.

I had someone's dog jump up at me which I didn't see as the dog was black and it was starting to get light. No apology from the owner, she just told me he gets excited

I wonder if she'd say the same if the dog had knocked over a child or an older person

That’s so rude. I hate it when the owners say either that or “he’s just friendly” 🙄

Has it never occurred to them some people don’t like dogs jumping at them irrespective of how “excited” or “friendly” their dog is?

Well unfortunately I read on here plenty of cases where a dog has knocked over a small child and the owner just laughs it off!

averylongtimeago · 31/01/2026 10:53

All this whataboutary, trying to blame the OP for getting in the way- it doesn’t matter if she was taking up the whole path, it doesn’t matter if she really really annoyed the jogger by going slowly, it doesn’t matter if she had an annoying dog/pushchair/toddler/ any combination of the above.
Public paths are for everyone- we have to share. The cyclist, the jogger, the family with kids and the dog walkers, all should behave properly.
So you don’t drop litter, you keep your dog under control (and poop scoop) , you don’t let your kid ram their scooter into people and if you are running or cycling you slow down to pass others.
If you want to have sole use of a race track, you go to a race track. Your desire to improve your personal best time is not more important than others right to a nice slow amble.

No excuse- you deliberately barging into another person is assault.

Im glad the OP reported this to the police. I would also post on local social media to alert others to watch out for this person.

Beeinalily · 07/02/2026 16:58

I've only just read this thread and commiserations to the OP, I hope you weren't hurt badly. But what has amazed me is the claim that 40% of people go running. Honestly, 40? Who? Why? Are they mad?

igelkott2026 · 07/02/2026 17:06

Bad enough that he barges into you running. I wonder what he's like in a car?

igelkott2026 · 07/02/2026 17:10

Has it never occurred to them some people don’t like dogs jumping at them irrespective of how “excited” or “friendly” their dog is

Nope we all have to love their dog and not worry if its muddy paws ruin our coat or it knocks us off our bike and we break our collar bone (didn't happen to me but did happen to someone I know).

The other thing is how many people move their dog between them and oncoming pedestrians. Why would you do that? Put yourself between me and your dog please!

But although I am not a dog fan the most annoying thing when I am walking or running on narrow paths is middle aged couples who refuse to walk single file when they see you coming towards them. LET GO HANDS! THE WORLD WILL NOT STOP TURNING! YOU CAN HOLD HANDS AGAIN AFTER I HAVE GONE BY!

Well that shouldn't happen if you are both keeping left. I wonder which of you was hugging the right hand side. Might well have been her in which case she was in the wrong. I always peer round corners to see if anyone is coming.

In fact a lot of pavement conflict wouldn't happen if people kept to the left.

I was barged hard last week whilst on a dog walk

the barger was a woman

This is not a man versus women issue

Actually, it is a man vs woman thing.

One woman doing it to you does not make an equivalent to all the men deliberately targeting women with this bullshit.

A man did it to me years ago - I can still see his face, the determination, and feel the force of it.

You feel attacked because you were attacked. By a coward.

Fern95 · 07/02/2026 17:30

It is assault to come up behind a woman and touch her in a painful way without asking. I'd report him. I have horrible recurring shoulder/neck problems and if it was me he could have made it worse or set it off thus impacting my ability to do the most basic things for several days.
