Jogger shoulder barged me today.

Notsuchafattynow · 29/01/2026 19:07

I was walking my dog this afternoon, when out of nowhere, a male jogger shoulder barged me. It was very intentional and my shoulder still aches now.

He carried on jogging, and we had the following exchange.

Me: excuse me! You just could have said excuse me!
Him: you took up all the path
Me: thats why you say excuse me! You wouldnt do that to a man.

He jogged futher on then said 'yes I would' and gave me the v's.

I live in a small village so likey to see him again. Should I report?

He was wearing a very distintive jogging outfit, but he kept his back to me, so I could not see his face. His legs were bare, so I could guess he was 60 plus as they were old man legs.

I feel like I was assulted!

This makes me feel sick. My DD21 tells me about stuff like this more or less weekly on her commute into London. She is petite and often feels men shoulder barge , stand right up behind her, push past her. I know tubes are busy but I think we just know when the intention is bad. What is happening to men? She also regularly gives up her seat for an older person while young men sit . Ugh!

Edited

My friend, aged 75 and 5 foot, was heavily shoulder-barged by a policeman at a London train station! She was behind him and a couple of other officers as they approached the escalator and he suddenly turned around to go the other way and bashed right into her head on! His walkie talkie caused later bruising to her shoulder.

Unbelievably he not only didn't apologise but didn't even acknowledge what he'd done and just walked away 😱

He sounds awful, i really don't understand the mindset of someone who gets so angry about being delayed for a couple of seconds, its part of living on a planet full of people, animals and things. He's probably the same behind the wheel, spreading his rage everywhere.

I pick my Dd up from the station and there are two men that run out of the station with little care for anyone else to get to their parked cars and leave the car park before any queue. The first time I saw it I thought there had been an emergency as it was after that train stabbing. Now after many repeats I realise they are just twats.

I’ll just tell you an incident that just happened to me. Me and DP walking along the pavement side by side. Oblivious to two runners behind us. As soon as I heard them we stepped aside and apologised for taking up the space. They said “no problem, we were glad of the rest!” and a brief exchange about the awful weather ensued. They went on their way merrily after a pleasant exchange.

It’s not hard to be considerate and polite It really isn’t.

We were the ones taking up the pavement. They didn’t feel the need to shoulder barge us.

DeathMetalMum · 30/01/2026 10:10

DD does an activity on a Sunday nearby a nice path on the river, I often go for a walk along the path for some exercise of my own sometimes dd1 would also come along for the walk. Lots of other people also around walking dogs, family walks etc

A local running club decided they were going to also use this path for their Sunday morning run. Some of the runners were so inconsiderate of anyone else walking along the path. Often too busy chatting (running three or four abreast) to be bothered to move out of the way. I always stood my ground and refused to move off the path. I was nearly shoulder bardged a number of times (by both men and women).

I do a fair bit of running and there is definitely a sizeable minority of joggers who think all trails and footpaths are exclusively their private property and everyone else has to give way because they are terribly serious high performance athletes dontchaknow. Equally, there are selfish morons who walk in large groups several people abreast and dont budge an inch when they see other people coming towards them and expect them to jump in a hedge or river.

Honestly never come across an inconsiderate fellow runner. Always perfectly respectful and willing to move to the opposite side when they see you coming towards them.

Definitely come across people walking side by side refusing to move when they see you coming. Sometimes I run around a park but I get so irritated by people, I can’t do it often. They know you’re coming and just make no attempt to move whatsoever so you’re forced to run in the mud on the side of the path and risk slipping.

Dog owners as well, they can be terrible for it. Their dogs aren’t trained well enough not to run straight at you and they seem to find it hilarious or cute or whatever but it really wouldn’t be if you fell and got injured or injured their stupid dog.

Sorry, I’m ranting because I know how infuriating people can be. Again, I’ll reiterate, I’d never get physical with anyone but can understand the rage as a fellow runner.

I live in an area with a lot of joggers and I do sometimes get barged (by men). I am fit, I walk many miles and run daily, but I am in my 70's, if one of these cunts knocks me down hard and I break a hip that is my mobility fucked.

I wouldn't bothered reporting but if I saw him again I would very definitely get in his way. What an A-hole!

Next time you see him trip him up 😂 maybe take a man with you ghough incase he becomes aggressive

It is a trend and has been discussed on MN at length. Remember the Putney Bridge jogger who shoved the woman into the path of a bus?

He was never found. Which seems mad as there is clear CCTV and he jogged back over the bridge after the incident. I'm not one for conspiracy theories but I feel like the police did investigate and do know who it is but he has connections. Either government agency, police himself or something else. It was just no way that in that situation he would not have been found and charged. That woman was so so lucky not to have died thanks to quick reactions of the bus driver.

Most runners are sound and if you are jogging the same route frequently enough you kind of build up a rapport with the same people you see. There are a few dick heads out there though, same with any sport.

I completely agree with your posts on this thread - solidarity as a fellow runner who has to navigate people's infuriating lack of path etiquette/awareness of their surroundings every time.

So many people either don't pay attention to what's around them (including behind them) or don't care. If you're on a public path, you should be prepared for runners and cyclists to exist, and for them to need to overtake you.

The worst offenders when it comes to either a) taking up the entire width of the path so no one else can pass and/or b) paying no attention to someone coming up behind you - or worse, coming up in front of you - are easily heterosexual couples and big family groups. Sometimes big groups of cyclists can be dicks. Solo runners, solo cyclists and solo walkers are almost always ON IT when it comes to awareness that they're on a shared path.

I've never barged anyone but I think about it on most of my runs! Closest I came was a family group coming towards me on a wide path - we all clearly saw each other with time to spare - I moved to one side and assumed they would shift their arses over to the other side and they just... didn't?! Still unsure whether they expected me to dive into the ditch or stop to make way for them like some sort of serf? I was facing the awful swaggering paterfamilias of the group and so just didn't alter my course - he veered at the last minute. I swear he thought it was some sort of power play. I wish I could say that was a one-off incident but it's so common.

Yes. The Met police are one of the most corrupt forces in the UK and i am certain they know who he was.

But who gets barged is sexed.

My enormous, shaven headed, broken nosed, body building DH floats through life like a swan through water. Narry a bump. Never a cross word to him. Wonder why...

Exactly. You can absolutely guarantee that a woman jogger would never in a million years deliberately barge into a man. She might knock him by accident but never as an aggressive 'get out of my way' gesture .

A male jogger would almost never do it to another man either, at least not unless he was considerably smaller than him or frail/elderly looking. And big burly blokes are pretty much never on the receiving end of this sort of behaviour

So maybe it is more strictly a big bully vs weaker looking person thing but that maps pretty closely to a male /female thing

Balloonhearts · 30/01/2026 11:36

Should've gone after him and shoved him back. He's lucky your dog didn't go for him, mine would've. He doesn't like when people are aggressive to me.

IsItSnowing · 30/01/2026 12:25

Good for you for reporting it. He likely runs the same route regularly and will probably do it again.
I'd pots on a local FB page if you have one as it might encourage others to come forward and report also. It may also shame the entitled twat into thinking twice next time.
And for the people saying it's not a man vs women issue - it absolutely is. And it's time women stopped making excuses for these entitled (and aggressive) twats.

Legomania · 30/01/2026 12:31

Sartre · 29/01/2026 21:25

I wouldn’t barge someone but I am a bit of a rage runner so can understand. Of course some people will have headphones I can’t see or hearing loss I don’t know about but most people will hear and in certain cases even see you coming and make zero attempt
to move. It’s kind of infuriating because it happens almost every single run. Sometimes it will be two people walking side by side, they will turn back and see me pelting towards them but not move so I have to go in the road. It’s usually women to be honest, no idea why.

As I say, no excuse to make physical contact but equally you probably weren’t the only one who got in his way.

I am generally fairly considerate of space on the pavement and make sure I and the kids don't hog it. However if someone is running I would expect them to go around me if needed rather than me having to jump out of the way.
Also, there is a lot of ambient noise outside and it's easy not to notice someone running up behind you. This week I was walking back from the school run and two joggers I know came up behind me and the first I knew of it was when one said "Morning Legomania!"

I just looked at the Putney Bridge incident again. Still just as shocking.

I can’t believe nobody recognised him!

Seagullstopitnow · 30/01/2026 13:40

If you do not alter your path, I will not alter mine.

This approach may change as I age! 🤣
I've been called a Cunt for not diving out of the way of an ever so important young businessman

I've had a standoff in an underground walkway whilst I was ON CRUTCHES (I just blinked at him and said "don't think so, do you?")

I had some pigeon chested little squirt trying to act hard in front of his mates yell at me (once he was well out of my way, coward)

I smile sweetly and blink at them normally. I'll probably get punched one day, we will see.

I care not for Jogger's PBs.

The issue is when people don't leave any space for runners to go around them because they're ambling down the middle of the path. So I have to assess (at speed) whether I can squeeze through the gap (and if I get too close to them they huff), or whether I'll have to leap into a road or a ditch or slippery mud myself. (If I stopped to walk around everyone taking up the middle of the path then I wouldn't get to run at all, never mind any personal bests.)

Also, if I know I can't necessarily hear someone coming up behind me (I frequently run and walk with headphones in) then I firmly keep to the edge AND periodically look round to check, especially if I'm altering my course.

Really basic pavement etiquette to be mindful of others using the space and in what way they do so, but I get a huge vibe from both posters in this thread and people in real life that a lot of people just dislike runners (and cyclists) on principle.

Givemeausernamepls · 30/01/2026 14:01

Some of these comments are wild… I live off a busy walking / cycle route. Often get families / groups taking up a lot of the considerable pavement. I’ve managed to never barge someone out the way! I would just politely say excuse me and walk past.

I have done a lot of running in my time and someone being in front of you on a path and that you can't get through is NEVER an excuse to barge them. You hover and say excuse me or at worst tap them on the shoulder if they haven't heard, or just wait for a space to pass. Just because you are going faster than the person in front doesn't mean you have the god given right to overtake or for them to get out of your way. Same as when you are driving, you overtake only if it's safe to do so.

I would always assume when approaching from behind as well that they have not seen and have possibly not heard you either as they don't have eyes in the back of their heads. I'm also aware that I might make someone jump out of their skin.

Completely agree. There’s very clear CCTV footage of him. The
only reason the woman didn’t die was because the bus driver managed
to swerve.

So attempted murder. With quite a bit of CCTV footage. Yet never been found. Right.

he prob got away with it like you say because he pushed a ‘Pleb’ out the way

It is most definitely assault.
