Jogger shoulder barged me today.

I was walking my dog this afternoon, when out of nowhere, a male jogger shoulder barged me. It was very intentional and my shoulder still aches now.

He carried on jogging, and we had the following exchange.

Me: excuse me! You just could have said excuse me!
Him: you took up all the path
Me: thats why you say excuse me! You wouldnt do that to a man.

He jogged futher on then said 'yes I would' and gave me the v's.

I live in a small village so likey to see him again. Should I report?

He was wearing a very distintive jogging outfit, but he kept his back to me, so I could not see his face. His legs were bare, so I could guess he was 60 plus as they were old man legs.

I feel like I was assulted!

No. And the best I can up with is "sorry", like I am apologising for existing.

But in future, I will just stand my ground. I hope that is ok.

Wouldn't standing your ground be more confrontational and anxiety inducing? Whats wring with a small excuse me please and a smile?

Why should I excuse myself for not stepping into traffic to avoid a group of people who are so self absorbed not to notice someone approaching them in the opposite direction?

When you at the point you have to say excuse me, you are already too close.

Seems like you’re the one taking up all of the room on this conversational pavement and refusing to budge when this lady stands her ground

Its called assault when someone deliberately uses physical force against you with the intent of inflicting pain. Regardless of the circumstances, I would report to the police. What if next time he deliberately shoulder barges an elderly/frail person to the ground and they break a hip or bash their head??
He doesn't own the path, its there for everyone to share ffs.

Not me no, im v happy to move/share the space/ wait/stand aside on pavements and pathways, its not something i mind.

I do that now. I am absolutely sick of people with a stroller and a dog on a leash on the school run, allowing the dog to sniff around on the other side of the pavement from them, basically setting a trip wire for other people with the dog leash. Occupying the ENTIRE width of the pavement with enormous stroller and dog on a leash forcing people to jump over the leash or nudge the dog away - or most often, wait. Wait for their fucking dog to finish its sniffing. I stop a little too close to either the dog or the stroller and they suddenly realise that a stranger is in what they deem to be their personal space (the entire pavement) and move. People are so bloody inconsiderate.

or just say ‘excuse me’ like a normal human being?

This is true, people are inconsiderate, but you don't need to assault people just because they're in your way.

OP: You should put this on your local facebook and log it with the police.

elfendom1 · 29/01/2026 22:18

That is an assault. Male/female perpetrator, still the same, you don't cross a physical barrier with someone intentionally (and his words suggest it was completely deliberate) without it being defined as an assault. I'd be out to get him. Report it or watch and wait, whatever you feel suits you, but you did nothing wrong and were assaulted. and you must feel so angry right now. And everyone knows he damn well would not have done that to another male.

Notsuchafattynow · 29/01/2026 22:20

Thanks for the support, I have logged it online. So at least there's a record of it.

I feel better for making a record of it incase there are other reports or next time it's one of the old ladies who walk that path daily.

Well done. If it’s only you it’s awful but you haven’t lost anything except - a little time -by reporting it. If it isn’t only you, then there’s more chance that he’ll be stopped. Someone who does that so brazenly, gives justification and has no remorse may well want to do it again.

Get a GoPro for when you are out and about ? Useful for all sorts of things. Like a pedestrian's Dash Cam.

Why didn’t I think of that the first 2,000 times this happened

🙄

Give it a rest with the “old lady” and “old man legs” shtick op. 60 is not “old”.

Other than that YANBU. People’s awareness of those around then has deteriorated massively. Men’s aggression around “their” space has skyrocketed. (And no I’m not going to apologise for saying men here).

I’m glad you’ve reported.

Bimpy · 30/01/2026 06:57

Woman walking dog mindlessly taking up whole pavement gets jostled out of the way by runner as he tries to pass. ‘Assault’? Get a grip!

I’ve really noticed an increase in shoulder barging by men recently. It’s happened to me several times.

It is a trend and has been discussed on MN at length. Remember the Putney Bridge jogger who shoved the woman into the path of a bus?

User0311 · 30/01/2026 07:01

I would 100% be posting a description on the local Facebook page! It might make him think twice about doing it again in the future

Kelvinator1 · 30/01/2026 07:04

I haven't been barged, but as an often solo dog walker I find an increasing number of people just won't move...even a tiny bit....eg. walking three abreast taking the whole path, and I'm expected to go off into the bushes to make way for them.

EleanorReally · 30/01/2026 07:06

carry a big stick

CrikeyNumpty · 30/01/2026 07:13

It is a thing unfortunately. I know people have cited women also doing it. But the man thing is part of the Tate/Manosphere thing.

It has happened to me in central London. I was walking by the Thames on an empty pavement and a male jogger came towards me in. He was on the outside edge of the pavement, I was on the other side, so we were not going to collide or be in each other’s way. I saw him look at me, swerve, and then ran straight at me, and bashed me with his shoulder so I stumbled. He just carried on jogging. It felt like an assault because it was one. He targeted me. I was stunned. It felt malevolent. I did not report it. I would have assumed the police would give me short shrift. That was just before the Putney Bridge incident. I don’t think it is the same person, but if it had happened after Putney I would have reported it.

Also at a central London station I saw a man doing it to a young girl. He was big, she was slight. She was wearing a hijab so I think it was racially motivated. She looked so shocked and stunned. I asked her if she was ok. He was smirking as he did it. At that time there was no awareness of it as a thing. There is now and it should be reported.

If it’s intentional then of course it’s assault. Why do you have a problem with that description?

DontKillSteve · 30/01/2026 07:30

There are some awful men out there who clearly hate women. I travel on the tube and the volume of aggressive men has increased exponentially. It’s difficult to know how much to retaliate. In the moment you are shocked and a percentage of these types will be psycho. I’m glad you reported him and I would definitely be putting an alert and full description on the town Facebook. Shame the fucker!

CrikeyNumpty · 30/01/2026 07:33

I just looked at the Putney Bridge incident again. Still just as shocking.
