AIBU to be bothered by the way female presenters dress?

I was just watching Good Morning Britain and it seems ridiculous that the male presenters stick to their male uniform whereas the females, particularly Susanna and Kate wear very tight, colourful dresses that really emphasise their body shapes. The contrast is stark, I don’t understand it and it’s certainly distracting!

And what’s wrong with emphasising the female body shape?

Screamingabdabz · 29/01/2026 08:18

It was ever thus. Patriarchy innit. Depressing.

SENmumof22026 · 29/01/2026 08:18

I agree, they should wear black bin bags instead.

bunnypenny · 29/01/2026 08:19

Burn them!

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 29/01/2026 08:20

Distracting for who??? Does your husband watch them, by any chance?
Email immediately and demand they get back to wearing a nice twin-set and pearls, sensible heels and a benign smile.

Or maybe, just maybe, they like to dress like this....

The sexism inherent in the fact that men don't have to do the same. Men are taken seriously as they are, women are only welcome on screen as sexual objects.

Branster · 29/01/2026 08:23

You clearly never watched tv programmes from other countries. Where even news presenters dress on what you would probably class as glamorous. The only other notable difference is that they are also incredibly telegenic (I don't want to upset anyone and say they happen to be better looking; not their fault, that's probably part of the selection process alongside with professional knowledge in whatever topic they are presenting in) compared to Good Morning presenters.
There is an element of entertainment as far as tv watching goes. Controversial maybe.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 29/01/2026 08:24

Can't say I've ever been distracted by a brightly coloured dress on a TV presenter.

LadyKenya · 29/01/2026 08:25

I think some of the way the Women are dressed on BBC Breakfast, leaves a lot to be desired sometimes, imo. The Men seem to have it easier, they just don a suit. Job done!

MissAustenMadeAQuilt · 29/01/2026 08:28

Apart from a brief period in history, women have usually dressed in more "peacock" clothing than men.

I enjoy doing it and don't look forward to wearing unisex grey boiler suits any time in the future.

I imagine most of us, if we are going out or are going to be on show anywhere enjoy dressing up-and the presenters are certainly on show and want to look their best.

Brides usually put a lot of effort in to their dress.

Are we all conditioned in to it? Maybe. I don't care. I like it!

I would hate to see the day when we all wear utilitarian grey jumpsuits to show how free of the patriarchy we are.

Of course, if you want to, do so, but I bet those presenters would be pretty appalled!

Just editing to add-female politicians do it too! When Kemi Badenoch stands up in PMQ, she wears more colourful clothing than Keir Starmer and looks as if she enjoys wearing it. No-one says she is a poor whimpering victim of the patriarchy-she likes clothes, as does Angela Raynor-good on them!

Ecrire · 29/01/2026 08:29

I am ever amazed by women who think it’s liberating - and indeed - about feminist choice - when women’s clothing is repeatedly created, marketed and worn to accentuate boobs and bums.

It is like some people cannot ask themselves WHY girls swimwear and shorts are quite so differently tailored than boys. For example. Why school uniform for girls involves the uniform ending sometimes just after the bum line - but not for boys. Why? Why do girls (and not boys) feel the need to have the skirts stop at the bum line?

how did we get here?

but no. If you ask these questions and link it to patriarchy you are shouted down because apparently it’s about choice. Such a shallow engagement with the notion of choice.

😂 sorry this made me laugh, imagine women wearing colourful clothes to work!

Naga on bbc is wearing a nice grey jumper dress that might be more to your taste op.

WhitsunWedding · 29/01/2026 08:30

I agree with you, OP.

Awaybore · 29/01/2026 08:31

It's a very long time since I've watched morning television but last week I was staying in a hotel so I had GMB on a few times, I didn't notice what they were wearing but I did notice the women's ridiculously long eyelashes and I found them really off putting.

I did think that Ed bloke didn't have to suffer the indignity of trying to present serious segments while trying to peer through spiders legs. They seemed to be very low hanging.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 29/01/2026 08:33

Personally, I don't think it's all because of the patriarchy that women generally put more thought and effort into their clothing.

And, sue me, sometimes I want my bum and boobs to look good for the opposite sex. I don't see anything wrong with that either.

Viva la Difference!

peacefulpeach · 29/01/2026 08:35

It’s even worse on Italian tv. Usually some decrepit old bloke in a suit with a 20 something fake boobed Barbie. We’re basically the same here but pretend to be better.

BCBird · 29/01/2026 08:38

I agree. Sometimes if u looked at them separately u would not even know they were about to do the same job.

Knitterofcrap · 29/01/2026 08:38

I don’t mind dresses or bright colours. I am just surprised they wear really unfashionable body con dresses and heels that haven’t been seen outside of TVLAND (looking at you The Apprentice) since the early noughties.

They just look like they are in a weird time warp.

DeathBanana · 29/01/2026 08:38

Not their bodies 😱.

May god smite them down for their lascivious ways. They’ve been tempted by the devil. Pray for them.

Branster · 29/01/2026 08:39

Another PP asked the rhetorical question:
For example. Why school uniform for girls involves the uniform ending sometimes just after the bum line - but not for boys. Why? Why do girls (and not boys) feel the need to have the skirts stop at the bum line?

Well, most teenage girls want to impress teenage boys. It's been like this since forever. At that age showing your body seems the easiest way to do it. Teenage brains don't have the wisdom of grownups, don't understand the wider picture and hormones take over their lives. C'est la vie!

LittleJustice · 29/01/2026 08:41

It would be good if there was some variety so if women wanted to not dress like that if they feel uncomfortable doing so because all the other women presenters addressed up like they're going out on the town.

I mean honestly women at work don't dress like that so I'm not sure why they have to dress like that on the telly.

itsthetea · 29/01/2026 08:42

if men started dressing like women - in tight clothes that show the size of their dick we would probably find it revolting and indicative that the man was a bit pervy / interested too much in sex and not enough in everything else that matters

the idea that women need to look good when men can get by on their brains is very offensive to women . still glad some see it
