AIBU to be bothered by the way female presenters dress?

I was just watching Good Morning Britain and it seems ridiculous that the male presenters stick to their male uniform whereas the females, particularly Susanna and Kate wear very tight, colourful dresses that really emphasise their body shapes. The contrast is stark, I don’t understand it and it’s certainly distracting!

Why do so many women find offense at other women appearing attractive? I sense a lot of jealousy going on.

You know, a lot of women like wearing heels. And can do so without finding difficulty with walking.

Why do they like wearing them?

So despite clearly being the best person for the job, you’d be happy for her to be excluded because she doesn’t have an attractive enough body or face.

I think I’d be ashamed to have admitted that on a public forum, tbh.

Well, I'd argue that she wasn't the best person for the job. A more attractive presenter would make the show more successful 🤷‍♀️

I'm not ashamed to be a realist.

Good, we are half way there. Next bit isn’t hard: why do you think it’s okay to require those things of female journalists, then?

I genuinely have no idea what you are on about.

Defending sexism with misogyny, nice move.

Why do they like wearing them?

Many reasons. They're attractive, sexy, elevate many outfits and look more professional.

This is always the lazy trope which is trotted out. Jealousy! You really haven’t been following the discussion here. I hope you’ve never complained about the gender pay gap, or commented on why women still don’t make up 50% of CEOs or even board members of FTSE 500 companies, or felt you’ve been talked down to by a builder or car mechanic for being female, or had to struggle to have your voice heard in a meeting where men dominate. When some of the most visible women in our culture are clearly valued more for their appearance than their ability, this attitude will continue to pervade and hold woman back from achievement on merit. That should bother all women.

Yes, exactly. Hence, Piers Morgan, for example. And that's why most male presenters look, in a certain light, a lot like Chris Hemsworth.

How is it sexism? Millions of women choose to dress that way every day because they like to. Why does it bother you so much that other women have different tastes to you?

Don’t you want a better working world for your daughter, though? Things which are wrong can change, we just have to stop accepting that they can’t.

  1. Attractive to whom?
  2. why would one need or want to be sexy at work?
  3. elevate how?
  4. what profession? Why is it professional to be a few inches taller and less able to move around easily or quickly?

I mean i am not in agreement with some of the posters but throwing jealousy into the discussion, really doesn't hellp and is an immature response !

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 29/01/2026 09:59

I watch F1; the women usually seem to feel the need to look glamorous, whereas the men often look perfectly normally dressed, in jeans etc. I find it disappointing, especially when they're all sitting on a plinth and the camera is slightly below them, and the ladies are constantly 'tweaking' their skirts because they're clearly uncomfortable. Why can't they be as comfortable and work-like as the men? A couple of the pundits (Jamie Chadwick, for eg) often do this and look great.

When Naga Munchetty was asked why she wore stilettos she's simply replied 'because I want to' Nuff said.

The sexism inherent in the fact that men don't have to do the same. Men are taken seriously as they are, women are only welcome on screen as sexual objects.

No they are not. Emily Maitlis, Emma Barnett, Anita Rani, etc etc, are serious journalists. Even the likes of Claudia Winkleman are accepted as serious presenters with something to say.

Pushmepullu · 29/01/2026 10:03

I have to say that I find it worse when presenters dress badly. There’s a presenter on News at One who dresses so badly that it’s distracting. Poorly fitting, ill matched colours, shoes that don’t match the outfit.

That's how it sounds with ridiculous comments about not being able to walk in heels. Women are perfectly capable of walking in heels. It's coming across as having quite a bitter mindset towards women who like to look attractive.

I do think, to be fair, it's much more a breakfast/daytime TV aesthetic, so I agree on that

I am ever amazed by women who think it’s liberating - and indeed - about feminist choice - when women’s clothing is repeatedly created, marketed and worn to accentuate boobs and bums.

It is like some people cannot ask themselves WHY girls swimwear and shorts are quite so differently tailored than boys. For example. Why school uniform for girls involves the uniform ending sometimes just after the bum line - but not for boys. Why? Why do girls (and not boys) feel the need to have the skirts stop at the bum line?

how did we get here?

but no. If you ask these questions and link it to patriarchy you are shouted down because apparently it’s about choice. Such a shallow engagement with the notion of choice.

Yes and when women are "empowered" and wear what that like, it always involves as little or as tight as possible.

Why is female empowerment about being virtually naked? When men are empowered they wear normal clothing.

moderate · 29/01/2026 10:05

HopSpringsEternal · 29/01/2026 08:59

That's fine. But it is the patriarchy.

What about when gym bros wear tight tees and skinny jeans to make their bum and chest look good for the opposite sex? Is that the matriarchy?

Oh I think I look really attractive. Just in trainers and boots. It's not ridiculous to say that obviously it is more difficult to move around on mini stilts. That's why you see women walk to work in skirts with trainers and heels in a bag for when the arrive. That's why athletes don't do it, runners don't do it, walkers don't do it and .....men don't do it. Of course you can walk, but I defy you to say it's as easy or comfortable as in normal shoes, or that you'd be able to break into even a jog if you had to.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 29/01/2026 10:06

millymollymoomoo · 29/01/2026 08:17

And what’s wrong with emphasising the female body shape?

Are they selling sex or are they presenting the weather?

A time and a place. Different patriarchal standards for men and women. Sexist social pressure. Why do women have to be sexualised all the time when men aren't?

tuvamoodyson · 29/01/2026 10:06

Coffeeishot · 29/01/2026 08:58

So you want women to wear shirts and ties like the men ?

…or should Ed Balls wear a brightly coloured dress and heels?
