AIBU to be bothered by the way female presenters dress?

I was just watching Good Morning Britain and it seems ridiculous that the male presenters stick to their male uniform whereas the females, particularly Susanna and Kate wear very tight, colourful dresses that really emphasise their body shapes. The contrast is stark, I don’t understand it and it’s certainly distracting!

Remember 'Marjorie and Joan' on Victoria Woods' show? They wore sensible clothes 😄

You're kidding aren't you? One of them has bare shoulders. Oh the horror 🤣

Sartre · 29/01/2026 15:10

I don’t think many men want to wear rainbow suits. Of course some ostentatious types may but the majority are only happy in a neutral suit. Women can definitely pull lots of colours off better and still be smart.

I haven’t watched GMB since it was GMTV years ago but is that the one with Ed Balls? I don’t really want to see him in a bright red spandex suit or anything so happy for him not to accentuate his body thanks!

justtheotheronemrswembley · 29/01/2026 15:10

Both male and female presenters are wearing what they want to wear. If you are offended by women wearing clothes they have chosen themselves and have decided are appropriate, write to them via the tv production people.

We, as women, have absolutely no right to tell other women what they should or should not wear.

That’s me in a nutshell…telling women what to wear all the time 🙄

Well at least you're admitting it.

Branster · 29/01/2026 18:57

@HazelMember . No, school uniform for girls is the proper length. The girls themselves shorten the skirts. It has always been like this and it will always be so.
You, me, the school, their parents can tell them and educate them as much as we want. The reality is that the majority of girls want to wear tiny short skirts. So they make them shorter.

shoopdoop · 29/01/2026 19:00

Do you think that women should wear grey ankle length dresses and walk with their head down in case a man dares to glance at them as they pass by?

No, of course not and I don't know how that follows from what I said! It's a matter of taste and choice. I wasn't referring to clothes or how they walk let alone how men react. Jeez, bit of a reach there. Some over sized flamboyant jewellery is a bit OTT in some TV contexts IMO and is distracting or jarring visually.

It is not the proper length. I will quote what @Ecrire said:

I am ever amazed by women who think it’s liberating - and indeed - about feminist choice - when women’s clothing is repeatedly created, marketed and worn to accentuate boobs and bums.
It is like some people cannot ask themselves WHY girls swimwear and shorts are quite so differently tailored than boys. For example. Why school uniform for girls involves the uniform ending sometimes just after the bum line - but not for boys. Why? Why do girls (and not boys) feel the need to have the skirts stop at the bum line?
how did we get here?
but no. If you ask these questions and link it to patriarchy you are shouted down because apparently it’s about choice. Such a shallow engagement with the notion of choice.

I will add that a lot of clothing is designed by men.

Branster · 29/01/2026 19:35

But they don't! If you buy the proper school skirts uniform in the correct size, they would absolutely not be mini or micro skirts. If you follow the school uniform rules, they don't allow short tiny skirts.
The parents have to buy the correct uniform. It really is not difficult at all. It's called parenting.
But even then, the girls will roll up the skirts because that's what happens.

HateBeingInsideMyHead · 29/01/2026 20:09

I have a degree, a masters, a PhD and a professional job... I also like to wear tight fitting clothes and heels that accentuate my figure and make me feel more confident.... absolutely nothing to do with being brain dead, the male gaze, the patriarchy, etc. etc.

I mean for a start I'm 5'2" without them which doesn't exactly scream 'powerful'

I have some days at work where for safety reasons I have to dress down, absolutely dread it as I barely own anything fitting the bill

BitOutOfPractice · 29/01/2026 21:45

sharkstale · 29/01/2026 10:48

And yet, you seem to think it's impossible for a woman to like wearing heels, or feel good wearing them, without it having been pushed by a man.

No further discussion to be had then?

Are you normally this obtuse or was today just a bad day? You seem determined to wilfully misinterpret any opposing views and / or see them as a personal attack. Not very edifying.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/01/2026 21:46

Zov · 29/01/2026 10:51

I don't think some women will be happy until all women wear a sackcloth, a big hat, and wellies. And make sure you cover that cleavage up ladies. You're a disgrace! 😆

Jesus Christ on an actual bike. Are you that unable to see any nuance at all in an argument?!

A timely article for anyone saying this is all a matter of individual choice and how dare anyone notice it or think it might not be great for women - www.theguardian.com/media/2026/jan/30/older-women-disappear-from-bbc-presenting-roles-internal-review-finds

I think some of the way the Women are dressed on BBC Breakfast, leaves a lot to be desired sometimes, imo. The Men seem to have it easier, they just don a suit. Job done!

I actually find some of Nagas weird clothing choices distracting. I often wish she would wear a fairly neutral boring suit like the men.

Greenwitchart · 30/01/2026 08:14

I have already commented but I also saw the Guardian article this morning.

Reading it just reinforces my belief that people who fail to see that female presenters and news readers have different expectations and rules placed on them compared to their male peers in term of how they look and dress are very naive.

Freysimo · 30/01/2026 08:22

On BBC alone, standards are totally different. For example, Sarah Smith has been noticeably glammed up since she became America correspondent. Gary O'Donohue also an American correspondent, is an excellent reporter, blind from birth, middle aged and overweight. Can't see BBC employing a female version of him.

I couldn’t see a female version of Lewis Capaldi making it big as a pop star either.

I would say Lola young has Lewis Capaldi "vibes" about her, also Cmat.

Yes her, i don't know why you are so aggressive about a 20something young woman.

I’m not being aggressive, just wondering why Lewis Capaldi didn’t need to expose any flesh to become a huge star. And chat is decidedly glam, not a female version of Capaldi at all.

They don't do it in all environments. Why do women always have to show their body when men don't? Are we ever just able to be appreciated for our ability or our minds? Or do we have to get our tits out to be relevant?

Have you seen how men dress these days. Their clothes are tighter than any woman's. Tight jeans showing tiny, squeezed, offensive bulges and terrible legs. Tight shirts showing sometimes great physique, but more often moobs and fat bellies... Now, that is something I wish we could do away with. Most of them look like Gru and the others just look like their suffocating ☹️.

Yeah, I REALLY don't want to see the shape of a blokes penis, or his nipples, if I'm not shagging him. I'm with you on this!

100% at school I remember the sports shorts/knickers! Even in the freezing cold of winter playing hockey! Teachers in full tracksuits while us girls were expected to wear essentially knickers! Some of us refused and made a fuss! So glad we had parents to support us and then they finally changed the rules to navy tracksuits can be worn as long as you wear the correct shirt. This was a very pro feminist, loads of feminist teachers school. We had the best discussions loved some of those teachers they were amazing, just couldn't understand what the PE unifrom was supposed to be for!
