AIBU to be bothered by the way female presenters dress?

I was just watching Good Morning Britain and it seems ridiculous that the male presenters stick to their male uniform whereas the females, particularly Susanna and Kate wear very tight, colourful dresses that really emphasise their body shapes. The contrast is stark, I don’t understand it and it’s certainly distracting!

Personally, I don't think it's all because of the patriarchy that women generally put more thought and effort into their clothing.

And, sue me, sometimes I want my bum and boobs to look good for the opposite sex. I don't see anything wrong with that either.

Edited

Do those times you want your boobs and bum accentuated include when you are at work? Possibly delivering serious news? Because that’s where tv presenters are. I do hate the double standards at play here.

Dweetfidilove · 29/01/2026 08:44

The female form is a beautiful thing, not something to be hidden. Unless that's what you wish to do.

I also know very very very few men in TV who can pull of a brightly coloured, fitted outfit.

When I get dressed in the morning, I'll choose clothes that I think look good on me so, yes, at work too. Obviously, I don't have my whole bum/chest hanging out but I'll choose things that are flattering to my shape.

I'm not sure what that has to do with TV presenters sometimes delivering serious news. They deliver a lot of non-serious news too.

Thechaseison71 · 29/01/2026 08:49

I've never ever noticed what a tv presenter wears whether male or female

OvernightBloats · 29/01/2026 08:49

Some of the tight dresses that female weather presenters wear look like they can't breathe! So tight that it looks uncomfortable. It's about time they moved away from this uniform of bodycon clothes and showed that being presentable doesn't mean wearing clothes that are too constricting.

I don’t mind dresses or bright colours. I am just surprised they wear really unfashionable body con dresses and heels that haven’t been seen outside of TVLAND (looking at you The Apprentice) since the early noughties.

They just look like they are in a weird time warp.

It’s this!

Another PP asked the rhetorical question:
For example. Why school uniform for girls involves the uniform ending sometimes just after the bum line - but not for boys. Why? Why do girls (and not boys) feel the need to have the skirts stop at the bum line?

Well, most teenage girls want to impress teenage boys. It's been like this since forever. At that age showing your body seems the easiest way to do it. Teenage brains don't have the wisdom of grownups, don't understand the wider picture and hormones take over their lives. C'est la vie!

Now, this is a ridiculous trend that needs a quick death. The 2025-26 school skirts just look plain ridiculous.

The complete opposite of the very tame BBC presenters.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/01/2026 08:53

Dresses that really emphasise their body shapes

Mary Whitehouse will be spinning in her grave.

Coffeeishot · 29/01/2026 08:53

I just turned to ITV , Kate Garroway is wearing a half sleeve just to her neck pink dress ! What do you want her to wear op ?

Justwrong68 · 29/01/2026 08:56

The replies on here always go to the extreme. Since when has it been a choice between skin tight neon dresses or bin liners and grey boiler suits.
it feels like the emperor’s new clothes. To highlight it, they interviewed a headmistress at a school who was wearing a shirt and tie, she looked perfectly fine even though the shirt, god forbid, was not tight.

Oh i dunno my Dd is 33 she wore tiny skirts with tights for a while in secondary, it isn't "new"

SleepingStandingUp · 29/01/2026 08:57

If you're so distracted by their form fitted dress that you can't concentrate on the news for obsessing over their body, I think that's a YOU problem not a THEM problem.

They're on television, of course they're going to want to look good with millions watching. What's wrong with that? What's wrong with a woman wearing a dress designed for a female body?

So you want women to wear shirts and ties like the men ?

That's fine. But it is the patriarchy.

Yeah this was a terrible example of PPs point. There are lots of adult /workplace situations where this is salient but teenagers trying to get laid is not the one to demonstrate it

Idontspeakgermansorry · 29/01/2026 08:59

I would hate if I had to wear loose shirts and ties to be considered professional.

Disagree 🤷‍♀️. I think it's a natural difference between women and men and natural human behaviour to want to attract the opposite sex.

Laura Tobin weather presenter is wearing a trouser suit i mean it is pink so perhaps a bit to "girlie" for the Op tastes.

Totally. And now I’m forced to imagine Richard Madely in tight cycling shorts

So all of you who are ‘meh’ about this, I’m interested to know if you’d be happy if you were selected, or not selected, for a job based on what you look like? It is very clear that only women with great figures and who are attractive can get a job as a morning news presenter. I’m sure there are lots of very capable female journalists who would do a fantastic job in that role who are a bit fat or have not great hair, but they aren’t getting those roles. Meanwhile, the men age badly, are often podgy and their suits don’t fit properly, but have no problems getting this lucrative gig. Double standards. We shouldn’t be applauding women being held to different standards which have no bearing on their ability to do a job well. This stuff is pervasive and where it’s so visible is still, sadly, contributing to the holding back of women in other work environments.

I do personally hate hot pink but I’m not dictating. Can’t I point out this ridiculous optic without people thinking I’m a clothes nazi?

The trend annoys me too, although more broadly than only on TV. But then I love baggy clothes. Calling women females bothers me a lot more. It's dehumanising.
