AIBU to be bothered by the way female presenters dress?

I was just watching Good Morning Britain and it seems ridiculous that the male presenters stick to their male uniform whereas the females, particularly Susanna and Kate wear very tight, colourful dresses that really emphasise their body shapes. The contrast is stark, I don’t understand it and it’s certainly distracting!

What would you say to your daughter if she was a crack journalist with awards who wanted to become a tv journalist and present one of these shows, but failed her interview for not being conventionally attractive enough?

I'd say I'm sorry sweetheart, their loss?

Maybe try radio? (Just kidding)

That's how it sounds with ridiculous comments about not being able to walk in heels. Women are perfectly capable of walking in heels. It's coming across as having quite a bitter mindset towards women who like to look attractive.

Saying women are jealous of other women is part of the issue, imo

What about when gym bros wear tight tees and skinny jeans to make their bum and chest look good for the opposite sex? Is that the matriarchy?

They don't do it in all environments. Why do women always have to show their body when men don't? Are we ever just able to be appreciated for our ability or our minds? Or do we have to get our tits out to be relevant?

Imagine if I said I was sensing a lot of jealousy on the thread from posters who envy the cognitive and analytical skills of others

ApplebyArrows · 29/01/2026 10:10

I agree with many of the points raised above about a lot of women's clothing choices being driven by the patriarchy.

But I also think men are actively pressured against interesting clothing in our society. In many formal contexts the expectation is that a man wear a suit, with the option of about four dull colours: a male presenter or politician turning up in something patterned or brightly coloured would be ridiculed for it. And in other contexts too men will get flack from their mates for dressing in ways that go against the norm, and the norm again allows far less choice than it does for women. At the other end of the scale from TV presenters there are sectors of society where males are expected to wear nothing but black sportswear.

  1. Attractive to whom?
  2. why would one need or want to be sexy at work?
  3. elevate how?
  4. what profession? Why is it professional to be a few inches taller and less able to move around easily or quickly?

Attractive to most people or we wouldn't need to be having this discussion, clearly.
But I meant to the woman wearing them. Do you never wear an outfit that makes you feel attractive? Or feel better with your nails done, or your hair a certain way? It's important to feel good in yourself for yourself. And heels can have that affect too. As can feeling sexy.
They do elevate outfits, I don't need to explain that. Many outfits look better with heels, especially dresses. And especially on tv.
In my personal opinion, yes, heels look professional.

Manymoresometimes · 29/01/2026 10:11

I like the way they dress. I used to dress the same before Covid and loved form fitting dresses, had a bright yellow one that i adored!

Sadly WFH means a very different dress code 😋

Tunnocksmilkchocolatemallow · 29/01/2026 10:12

Tight revealing clothing and burkas are different sides of the same coin.

No ones talking about others intelligence. This thread is about women's appearances being 'distracting'.

ClairDeLaLune · 29/01/2026 10:13

I’d much rather wear colourful shapely dresses for work than a boring old suit. It would make me feel much more cheery and happy. Me. Not anyone else. I dress for myself.

Having a wide range of clothing to choose from is one of the many reasons I’m glad I’m a woman not a man.

brunettemic · 29/01/2026 10:13

My bum is a very nice shape, why shouldn’t I wear a dress accentuating that?
Funnily enough a couple of friends and I were talking the other day how it’s great when you go to events (weddings, work things etc) and all the women wear different dresses, tops, skirts, trousers, colours, styles but the men all wear a suit, which when you break it down is basically the same thing.

nOlives · 29/01/2026 10:14

YANBU op.
I have been distracted by news presenters shoes when they do the standing up bit. Every single one a pointy toed high stilletto indistiguishable from each other.
Oh, exept the men don' wear those. I've not been distracted by (or even noticed) the men's shoes.
In case someone comes on and says I'm wrong, this would be 3-8 years ago. Maybe they have a different uniform shoe now.
I can't help but think about what their poor feet look like, and whether they feel they have to wear them, or even have been told to. It genuinely distracts me.

vickyfowler · 29/01/2026 09:18

I agree re the difference in male v female outfits, but I don’t understand how you find a woman’s outfit distracting? Surely that just makes you part of the problem?

It was ever thus. Patriarchy innit. Depressing.

I think it's the opposite of "patriarchy" actually.

Don’t you want a better working world for your daughter, though? Things which are wrong can change, we just have to stop accepting that they can’t.

A better working world, if my daughter wanted to be a TV presenter? No, not really.

To me, tv presenter is in the same vein as modelling or acting. Being attractive is usually inherent to the role. And I don't see anything wrong with that so I'm not interested in changing it.

Manymoresometimes · 29/01/2026 10:16

Slightyamusedandsilly · 29/01/2026 10:06

Are they selling sex or are they presenting the weather?

A time and a place. Different patriarchal standards for men and women. Sexist social pressure. Why do women have to be sexualised all the time when men aren't?

Wearing a form fitting dress and heels is selling sex?!

God thats a horrible way to view women 😫

Tunnocksmilkchocolatemallow · 29/01/2026 10:16

The distraction is the dramatic difference in the way men and women are expected to dress. Not bums and tits. I think most of us are so accustomed to that difference we barely consider it.

Comtesse · 29/01/2026 10:17

It’s also dated and naff but seems to be expected that “wear a nice bright tight dress” is like a uniform. With big hair, high heels and a ton of make up. It’s old fashioned.

CreativeGreen · 29/01/2026 10:05

Oh I think I look really attractive. Just in trainers and boots. It's not ridiculous to say that obviously it is more difficult to move around on mini stilts. That's why you see women walk to work in skirts with trainers and heels in a bag for when the arrive. That's why athletes don't do it, runners don't do it, walkers don't do it and .....men don't do it. Of course you can walk, but I defy you to say it's as easy or comfortable as in normal shoes, or that you'd be able to break into even a jog if you had to.

Comparing an athlete running in heels to a woman who feels attractive in heels is ridiculous. I can walk perfectly fine in heels, and why on earth would I need to break into a jog? I don't do that in heels or otherwise

Would you suggest Ed Balls is as attractive as Charlotte Hawkins, Kate Garraway, or Susanna Reid?

Tunnocksmilkchocolatemallow · 29/01/2026 10:19

Wow, a lot of posters who probably also think strip clubs are empowering for women…

Kate Garroway had a pink neck high dress as i mentioned, did you find her breast shape distracting.would you like her to wear a more flowing dress tomorrow so you are not too distracted, or perhaps Kate could wear a.minimiser bra to tame those girls !
