Words and phrases that drive you insane...

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 11:25

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

Often paired with 'thinking outside the box' 😂

And "let's take this offline" - unless you're going to send me a letter in the post about it, you're still going to have to contact me online!

CoffeeMumForever · 26/01/2026 12:23

‘In my era’ , absolutely despise this!!!!! Eg in my fake tan era.

Imicola · 26/01/2026 12:24

I was "gifted" X.
And "bakes" as opposed to just simply baking or cakes.

Or unless they’re a member of The Four Tops

When DH was working he was approached by a lot of agencies who would start by saying.'im reaching out to you '..he said it made his skin crawl.

My hates are
Very much so
bla bla much... eg..upset much.
Why can't they say.' I'm really upset.
It broke the Internet...er..nope .net still working.
An American one.. " are you kidding me right now "..

thesecondmrsdewinter20 · 26/01/2026 12:25

‘gift’ used as a verb. For example ‘my husband gifted me x for Christmas’ instead of ‘my husband gave me x for Christmas’. HATE IT

Bleachedjeans · 26/01/2026 12:25
  • gifting
  • holibobs
  • drinky-poos
  • reaching out
  • between you and I (I know this is a grammar one but some people use it to sound correct when they are actually being most INcorrect!
  • ‘to I’ when it should be ‘me’. My adult stepson does this - ‘ He told wife and I’ Grrrr!
  • making memories
  • we are pregnant-ok and good luck with pushing a 7 pound baby out of the end of your penis.
peacefulpeach · 26/01/2026 12:26

Agree with all of yours op and all of the ones others have said!

Has anyone said (sorry if I’m repeating!)

‘Naice’ - strictly a MN feature afaik but I really really can’t stand it. Makes me shudder a bit when I see it.

Chillax is awful but I say it to my kids just to annoy them.

my truth / your truth - stop it

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 26/01/2026 12:26

The second I saw this thread, I immediately thought of "chillaxing" and then saw it right there in the OP ❤️

I agree that "give your head a wobble" is really annoying. How does it even make sense?

I hate "I'm based in...." When they mean they live there. I don't mean when they say it in relation to where they work, I mean when they are talking about where their home is. It's so annoying.

CrustyBread1977 · 26/01/2026 12:27

“Fast forward”. It’s everywhere on MN and adds nothing to the meaning of a sentence. For example, “DH and I got married in 2022. Fast forward to last week and he …”. Just say “Last week he …”!

Americans also say "real quick" for no reason. That's annoying.

ACR7 · 26/01/2026 12:28

I actually do say I’m going to the shop for picky bits 🤣 I didn't know that was annoying!

I hate when people say ‘as a ….’ Or ‘…..here’ makes me cringe. It’s like saying everyone listen to me I’m right.

I heard this the other day...I couldn't believe it....Unalived..instead of dead

Omg! I hope you stabbed the offender with your fork! What a ridiculous word. I hope it doesn’t catch on…

Bobbyelvis4ever · 26/01/2026 12:29

So many:
nom nom - no. Stop it.
live laugh love / let love live (or any similar thing), especially when on a decal
Holibobs
Chrimbo
Hubs
Making Memories / Memories Made
Bought instead of Brought
Draw instead of Drawer
Bubs
I’ll send you the deets.
Lets park that for now
Let’s circle back

all hateful.

RaraRachael · 26/01/2026 12:30

Curated sourced artisan - pretentious twaddle

You do you

I was today years old

Tell me you're xxx without telling me you're xxx

Over use of literally

The use of like in between every word in a sentence

Get your ducks in a row

havingoneofthosedays · 26/01/2026 12:30

Anything like 'my wee family' 'our bubble'

Just awful, usually said on here by a female who has been asked to shock horror go out/away with friends!!

Also school gate mums, mum mafia etc

peacefulpeach · 26/01/2026 12:30

It’s called “ill advised with bill nighy” - he promises to try and not make things worse 😂
