Words and phrases that drive you insane...

1000 replies

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 11:25

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

People that can't speak without the constant unnecessary use of 'like in every single sentence. Makes you sound thick. I'm surprised schools/parents haven't clamped down on it. They'll have no chance at interviews, meetings etc in the real world.

I’ve started using “making space for” as I was pulled up for saying that I was having a good clear-out” - which was, wrongly, interpreted as meaning in the toilet department🤣

I wish there was a laughing reaction option!

It's used on social media because dead and killed and murdered get flagged up and blocked

24Dogcuddler · 26/01/2026 12:16

Would of, could of should of etc
In my eyes

NeverHadHaveHas · 26/01/2026 12:16

A corporate wanky one - ‘we are aligned’ 🤢 Just say ‘I agree’ with you!

takealettermsjones · 26/01/2026 12:16

Girlie din dins is awful 😫

I have a colleague who adds cutesy endings to lots of words, like lunchypoos and coffeebobs. It's... quite hard to listen to. 😅

I haven't heard anyone say chillax since about 2012 though!

sammylady37 · 26/01/2026 12:17

“If that makes sense”. Without exception, it’s said in a patronising tone, after the person has discussed something incredibly basic (and usually tedious) that requires little intelligence to understand, but yet they finish with that, as if they’re saying they’d be happy to dumb it down for you.

Enko · 26/01/2026 12:17

Another vote for picky bits..

zipadeeday · 26/01/2026 12:17

bits and bobs
fess up

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 12:18

Another one just came to me - again, it's a millenial one. 'Aks' / 'Axe' instead of 'Ask'

Also ‘scum’. I don’t know why but there seems to be a close link between people who use the word scum and stupidity.

Often paired with 'thinking outside the box' 😂

I think people started using this because on FB and Instagram, comments or posts with the actual word can get flagged or banned hence “unalived.”
There’s actually a whole list of banned or heavily monitored words that bots pick up on and can get content blocked such as: blood, kill, suicide, rape, murder, even dead in some contexts. Still doesn’t make it sound any better though 😂

CatMum27 · 26/01/2026 11:38

I had a friend who referred to going out to dinner with a group of ‘mature’ ladies as “girlie din dins”.

This is just one of many reasons I no longer attend!

😂I swear to God if one of my mates said that I'd punch em straight in the mouth! 😂

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/01/2026 11:36

People being encouraged to 'grab' things.

People who 'reach out' (unless they are short people trying to get items from high shelves in supermarkets.

Or unless they’re a member of The Four Tops
