Words and phrases that drive you insane...

1000 replies

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 11:25

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

"I expressed that..." instead of "I said" or "I told him" or some other normal phrase. I see this a lot on MN and I hate it.

A colleague uses “I shared…” and “I named that…” and it makes me feel murderous.

Nicecatneighbour · 26/01/2026 12:42

Everything being "a journey" makes my eyes roll.

And everything being a 'rollercoaster of emotions'.

Tsunami and poonami can do one too.

ClaredeBear · 26/01/2026 12:46

“OP, I say this gently”. But we all hear the patronising tone.

Lordofmyflies · 26/01/2026 12:47

People who say they have 'done" a country.
e.g Me : "I'm going to Italy this summer"
Annoying person " Ah, well we DID Italy the year before.
What? ! What are you "doing"?

Askingforafriendtoday · 26/01/2026 12:47

24Dogcuddler · 26/01/2026 12:16

Would of, could of should of etc
In my eyes

Also not understanding that 'me' comes after 'from', not 'I', as in this is 'from Tim and me.' You wouldn't say 'from I.'

Also brought and bought are surely not that difficult 🤷‍♀️

Crinkle77 · 26/01/2026 12:48

'Absolutely' when yes will suffice.

PleaseAccepyMyUserNames · 26/01/2026 12:48

I don't know why this bothers me so much, but loads of history podcasts I listen to like to use the word 'spaces'. As in:
"They inhabited these spaces"
"They moved through these spaces"
"They had a shared experience of those spaces"
Instead of bedroom, house, town, room etc. I now can't stop noticing it and it winds me up! I'm willing to be wrong, but it seems they think it makes it all sound more academic.

Monty34 · 26/01/2026 12:48

I got emotional. I was so emotional. I didn’t expect to get emotional.

There are other words to use to describe feelings.

Scubanicki · 26/01/2026 12:48

"I was today years old"
his instead of he's

ClaredeBear · 26/01/2026 12:48

YourFairCyanReader · 26/01/2026 12:44

Oh no! What should we be saying instead?

lIt was t used by millions of line parents before. I just used to say “her father”, or just use his name. I guess we just didn’t give it a name before but perhaps it needed one.

LilacHedgehog123 · 26/01/2026 12:48
  • Making Memories (where is the vomit emoji?)
  • It is what it is (the most pointless description of anything, ever)
  • You do you (also pointless)
  • People calling themselves "naughty" for having a biscuit
  • "What's the chat" (??)
  • My rock
  • BFF
Maggee · 26/01/2026 12:49

Hubbie, hon, fur baby, chippy tea, I’m going for a “cheeky” Nando’s or a “cheeky” drink.
People describing other people’s kids as “feral” when most of the time , it’s just kids being kids.
“Use your words”

Quite a few corporate ones…
“I wanted to touch base with you”
“I just want to sense check the list”
“Let’s regroup and come back with some blue sky ideas”
I’d keep a straight face when management said shit like this but I’d be secretly thinking, oh, shut up, stop with this nonsensical office jargon.

Monty34 · 26/01/2026 12:50

I reached out to you. I am reaching out to you.
Please, just say I am contacting you.

jocktamsonsbairn · 26/01/2026 12:50

My bad 😤
draw instead of drawer
yummy
nom nom
axe or aks instead of ask
mix up of me/I

Squeakymoo1 · 26/01/2026 12:50

Bunch as I "just add a bunch of water to it"

Tarkan · 26/01/2026 12:50

Chop chop
Moreish
My bad
Chillax
Guesstimate

And on the subject of “unalived”, I got a 24 hour FB ban for saying the word “kill”, and my appeal was rejected. My comment was on a post about mushrooms and I said, “I was taught how to forage for mushrooms as a child. I wouldn’t do it now though, as I wouldn’t want to accidentally kill someone”. And apparently that was a ban, so while it’s a shite word I totally understand online use of “unalived” now.

Monty34 · 26/01/2026 12:51

It was outside of my comfort zone.

Think of something new to say…. Please !

BigBilly · 26/01/2026 12:52

How come no-one has said the MN perennial favourite "put your big girl pants on"????

Tarkan · 26/01/2026 12:53

Oh and posts with some sort of sale (usually not THAT good) and it says “don’t walk, RUN!”

Wheresthebeach · 26/01/2026 12:53

Educate yourself. So condescending.

BeanQuisine · 26/01/2026 12:53

People starting accounts with "So...", and entering a conversation with "I mean..." as if they'd already contributed something that they're now expanding on.

Elltothebeetothejay · 26/01/2026 12:53

Draws instead of drawers
"Eatery" 🙄

EasternEcho · 26/01/2026 12:54

Something I've only read on MN: Tell me you're X without telling me you are X. I feel it's a silly phrase.

allthedragons · 26/01/2026 12:55

Simples. The minute I hear/read that I instantly dismiss whatever else is said or written. Moronic.

And 'tummy' from an adult. 😬

Grammarnut · 26/01/2026 12:56

MonsteraDeliciosa · 26/01/2026 11:41

“Your X, your rules”

Utterly stupid.

Meaningless, as well. Frequently it is not 'your rules'. I always wonder if that means they can murder someone at home and it's ok because 'their rules'?
Loathe Chrimbo (horrid abbreviation for the Mass of Christ), and 'you do you', which is indeed condescending.
