Words and phrases that drive you insane...

1000 replies

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 11:25

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

I heard this the other day...I couldn't believe it....Unalived..instead of dead

That been really common for ages. I'm surprised you've only just heard it.

People say it online to avoid getting flagged and/or banned from certain places online, particularly tiktok.

Words like "suicide" "kill" "murder" etc can trigger social media bots and get your posts removed, so people started coming up with words to get around it.

No excuse for using them out loud in RL though. It's on par with saying "Oh Em Gee"

NiceCupOfChai · 26/01/2026 12:33

Agree with all of the above, especially din dins - who would’ve thought you could make that any worse?!

  • been instead of being
  • text instead of texted
  • you do you - actually causes a micro moment of rage!
  • rude ‘much’? - Or similar
  • fast forward
  • the complete muddle over me, myself and I. Drives me mad. People like to use myself and I because they think it makes them sound educated, and avoid me because there’s this idea it’s wrong/common/uneducated.

Bill Nighy has just started a fab podcast where he does a “banned word” list as one of the features - holibob has already featured!

Bill Nighy you say.?

mildlysweaty · 26/01/2026 12:34

“It’s giving”

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 26/01/2026 12:34

"Holding space." Always said by a certain type of knob.

blankcanvas3 · 26/01/2026 12:34

‘Girl dinner’ and ‘girl maths’ please fuck off and die

RaraRachael · 26/01/2026 12:35

Newname71 · 26/01/2026 12:32

In shops, cafes etc “Can I get?”

As has been said on numerous times, "Can I get" is the normal way of asking for things in Scotland and, I believe, Ireland.

"you do you" is often made worse by people saying "you do you, boo!" My sister says it and it's irritating as hell. Especially sine it's blatantly obvious that what she means is "what you're doing is stupid".

Coffeeishot · 26/01/2026 12:36

I heard a woman i follow on SM say "parasocial relationship" recently and it made me want to poke her in the eye !

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 26/01/2026 12:36

"I expressed that..." instead of "I said" or "I told him" or some other normal phrase. I see this a lot on MN and I hate it.

Chiefangel · 26/01/2026 12:38

I hate the phrase, ‘It is what it is’

My friend calls her slippers ‘slip slips’

BloodyBoilingInHere · 26/01/2026 12:38

I've got a friend who I genuinely really love, and appreciate all aspects of her personality, apart from the fact she calls breakfast "brekkie" and sandwiches "sarnies".

NiceCupOfChai · 26/01/2026 12:38

Oh and ‘adjacent’ in the context of looking for something similar. I first heard it in a wooden toy but/sell group when someone posted “wooden toy adjacent” items - I left the group.

UninitendedShark · 26/01/2026 12:39

‘Reaching out’

BoudiccaRuled · 26/01/2026 12:39

Invite as a noun (the word is invitation).
"Sat" instead of sitting.
Myself, yourself, himself instead of me, you, him.
There are many...

ohyesido · 26/01/2026 12:40

Snog. I hate that word so much

This! And electric as a noun, as in I need to buy electric.

Overtheatlantic · 26/01/2026 12:41

Myself, yourself
“Plenty” of water
No fool like an old fool
Picky bits/tea
Cuppa
Fucks me off
Boils my piss
Skint

Overtheatlantic · 26/01/2026 12:42

Sat, stood instead of sitting and standing.

Nicecatneighbour · 26/01/2026 12:42

Everything being "a journey" makes my eyes roll.

VictoriaEra · 26/01/2026 12:43

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/01/2026 11:36

People being encouraged to 'grab' things.

People who 'reach out' (unless they are short people trying to get items from high shelves in supermarkets.

Yep. Grab your mates, grab a ticket, grab a coffee. Please make it stop.

Abouttoblow · 26/01/2026 12:43

Pedant5corner · 26/01/2026 11:56

Literally when used to emphasise as in 'I literally died of embarrassment' or 'I literally just said that'.

I second that and add using literally when the thing/event etc they're referring to is most definitely not literal.

Scubanicki · 26/01/2026 12:44

CatMum27 · 26/01/2026 11:38

I had a friend who referred to going out to dinner with a group of ‘mature’ ladies as “girlie din dins”.

This is just one of many reasons I no longer attend!

Ugh, I would not go either!

Greenqueen40 · 26/01/2026 12:44

Gentle hugs or indeed gentle anything makes me want to scream
Picky bits is almost as bad

YourFairCyanReader · 26/01/2026 12:44

Bleachedjeans · 26/01/2026 11:52

‘Co-parenting’ always gets a massive eye roll from me.

Oh no! What should we be saying instead?
