Do you home dye your hair?

If so, why and what colour?

I used to do it for fun when younger, but now at 48 have a fair few greys so will do again, does it look natural?

I think it slightly depends on hair type. I'm fortunate in having curly hair so it looks less blocky having one colour. People with very straight hair might find it more obvious?

Other thing is you have to obviously keep on doing it, every month at least.

Zov · 23/01/2026 22:52

Well, it's £55 to £70 at the hairdresser, and I can do it for a fiver, so yes I home dye it. Light brown or dark blonde or ash blonde. (My natural colour is mousy.) I am about 10% grey that's all, so cannot 'embrace the grey.' If I was mostly grey I would. But there is so little that it's easier to just dye the bit of grey I have!

Brandyb · 23/01/2026 22:52

So glad I did it though as I found my grey patch on my hairline very aging. Esp when I look back on pics.

I’m probably about 10% grey, if that, too, but my hair is dark so it can be seen

I dyed it my own medium brown and it's fine

PinkiOcelot · 23/01/2026 22:54

I used to. Then decided, I work. I don’t smoke or go out drinking, so I can treat myself to a hairdresser colour.

Yes I find the ones at the front near the hairline ageing on me

I use a semi perm on my roots every 4 weeks which keeps it looking ok until I see the hairdresser once every 3 months. Couldn’t afford more!

Do you have full colour all over?

Every couple of months. And yes it does look quite natural as it's close to my natural colour. Smile

Zov · 23/01/2026 23:08

Mine is usually pretty close to this colour @Wishmeloveawishingwellkissandtell

Dinosweetpea · 23/01/2026 23:16

Yes, I do mine light ash brown, very natural looking, Every few months a full top half permanent dye and then the root touch up boxes once a month. I use a colour as close to my own as I can get. I just can't afford to have it done at a salon. A cut alone is £70 let alone with a colour on top.

PullingOutHair123 · 23/01/2026 23:25

medium brown. Works fine. The colour doesn’t tend to be too blocky - there are tones within it somehow.

Although did try dark brown once - that was very obviously wrong, dark, un-natural looking.

So if trying, go lighter, then go a bit darker if you feel you need to.

Apply aprox every 6 weeks. Covers most of the greys!

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 23/01/2026 23:45

Cosmic blue XXL live - I'm 100% white since my early 20s, it happened overnight so I've coloured it since.. I was deep brown before that.

I'm now in my 50s. I do it at the beginning of the month. I generally let it sit for several hours before rinsing. I cut my own hair and sometimes do an undercut.

GU24Mum · 23/01/2026 23:50

I’ve had mine done at a salon for a few years (did it myself a bit before that) and have just started dying it myself again. I’ve made a pretty reasonable job I think.

For me, I didn’t enjoy just going to a salon for colour, think it’s expensive for the value I get from it and it takes ages. At least when I do it at home I don’t have to drive anywhere and can do something while the colour is on. I’ve used dye from Sally this time and mixed it myself.

mondaytosunday · 23/01/2026 23:59

Yes and have been doing so since I started going grey at 19! I’m 63 now. Three times I’ve tried a salon and the last time it was £200 and looked no better than my own efforts. I generally use L’Oréal Excellence in natural golden brown, in summer in lightest brown. It would look more natural if I stayed on top of my roots! I have wavy hair it doesn’t look like a solid block.

PeopleTheyAintNoGood · 24/01/2026 00:05

If you've only a few grey hairs, I'd recommend just brushing dye through the ones around your hairline in your colour.

You can just mix a little of the dye up and put it through with a mascara type brush.

BubblesandTiara · 24/01/2026 00:09

I used to, but now I really don't. I tried again during the lockdowns, and it was awful. I went darker rather than lighter to avoid any catastrophe but it sill looked awful

My hairdresser uses several colours, so it looks really natural. Home dye is just one block of colour, and never the exact tone I'd like.

Having it done professionally is expensive but worth every penny unless I live with a hat on

Whowhenwhatwear · 24/01/2026 00:57

I'm planning to dye my own hair so thanks for the thread @Wishmeloveawishingwellkissandtell

If anyone can recommend a permanent dye they like, and any tips for beginners that would be so appreciated thanks 😊

AppropriateAdult · 24/01/2026 01:09

Yes, have been doing it for years - would have been completely grey since my late 20s otherwise. My natural colour was dark brown, so I dye it a dark brown (permanent) every 4-6 weeks, and once I’ve washed it for the second time after dyeing it looks fairly natural. I have tried a lighter brown from time to time but there’s always too much red in it, which I don’t like.
Like other posters, I’ve had it done at a hairdresser from time to time and just don’t feel it’s worth the time and money to look not very different from what I can achieve at home.

7238SM · 24/01/2026 01:17

Yes, I've used L'oreal casting colour creme for about 10yrs. Its a semi, so washes out after 24washers apparently. I never leave it that long before colouring again though. I'm a similar age, and would likely be 50% grey I'd guess. As a child I was naturally a milk chocolate brown. I did have a few permanent colours in my 20's, but didn't like the permanent re growth line.

Why- I've had some dreadful results at a hair salon! Twice, 2 different salons and different countries I had some highlights put in- they were awful. 1st time they put highlights and low lights in. My hair was already dark so the low lights were invisible, and my hair looked like massive zebra stripes. The hairdresser said they'd settle and blend in- they didn't!

Another time, when the foils were removed- so was my hair! When they put the colour on the rest, instead of a chestnut brown, it was a mulberry purple. I spent months with tiny, spiky bits of hair sticky out where they'd all broken off. The hairdresser said it was due to me having some greys! I work full time and can't stand spending half a Saturday sitting in a salon, making idle chit chat, waiting for my hair to be done. Along with covid, I've just coloured my own hair for years.

The brand I use comes out darker than you'd think, so I always go several shades lighter. I buy light brown or chocolate caramel- which gives a slightly chestnut colour. I'm sure I will need to go to a permanent colour soon or back to a salon, but for the moment, I'm happy doing my own every 6 weeks of so- for a fraction of the cost and about 1/5 of the time sitting in a salon.

I like Clairol best. I colour my hair every three weeks.

I recommend you buy a box of decent disposable gloves. The ones in boxes of Hair Dye don't stay on properly.

I do

Which is unfortunately why I haven't had a hair cut in over 10 years and it's still the same bloody length it was then 😭

And basically every colour under the rainbow....except green for some reason! 😬🤣

I've only had it professionally done once. I was going to a summer uni ball any my ex kindly agreed to pay for a cut and colour. I wanted to be blonde.

£90 later I was a weird shitty brunette.

My flatmate got it blonde in one go with home hair dye and I've done it myself since 🤣

Mine grows all the time.
I have it cut every four weeks.

I've been colouring my hair for years.

No I pay someone to high and low light it. I’m red headed naturally and box dyed it for years. When the grey roots appeared and the grey batwings emerged I went to someone who only colours it. She is brilliant- I’m going grey blonde in stages while still being red.
