Do you home dye your hair?

If so, why and what colour?

I used to do it for fun when younger, but now at 48 have a fair few greys so will do again, does it look natural?

Box dye fucks your hair up and makes roots really obvious IMO.

DinoLil · 24/01/2026 01:26

Yes. Pink! But it's a temporary colour that only lasts 8 washes so easy to do and doesn't damage my hair.

blueshoes · 24/01/2026 01:28

I have dark hair and use Clairol Nice 'N Easy Creme Permanent Hair Dye to dye the roots every 4-5 weeks. It is for the whole head but I use half at a time so it lasts twice as long.

This colour is not super-black, but a softer black which does not look as harsh.

You can buy the root touch up version but you get more mileage out of the whole head one. Costs me less than 50 pounds a year.

I’ve been happiest with manic panic or henna. My hair is a very dark brown so the light and grey strands pick up a bit of colour and everything looks shiny. I had balayage professionally done this spring and after a correction it looked great for about 6 washes and then the toner wore off and I just had yellow streaks instead of hazlenut. I thought it would go 3 months between visits and that was already more than I was actually planning to do. So I did a demi permanent from Sally a few times which lasted much longer, but then I put henna over it and had a great result. it’s been 3 months and the hennaed part looks great, just have lots of dark showing grey again. I have dye but no henna left so I think I’ll do that and see how I like it - it’s more damaging than henna so might decide to stick with henna. My grey is very very obvious but less than 10% so I think I’ll dye it a few years and then go to pink and purple when it’s fully grey

Yes I have for years because my hair is naturally a dull mousy brown. I prefer it a few shades lighter but don’t like the roots. Currently light ash brown or dark ash blonde but it is a bit boring. Always ashy, with blue shampoo to top it up.

I’m one of few actually hoping for more greys (only got three and I’m in my 50s!) so I can eventually have a lighter ashy blonde that’s less rooty than it gets now. It just makes me look and feel brighter.

I think the trick with box dyes is to keep combing through it when the dye is on, so you don’t get any blocky sections, and I use half a bottle at a time so it’s not totally saturated in colour and do it every 5-6 weeks.

Cost: £2 per month.

caringcarer · 24/01/2026 01:48

I dye my hair light ash brown which is my natural hair colour before the grey set in. I do it once a month and comb it through whilst on my hair. I'm happy enough with it. I really hate the greys.

AlpacalypseLlamaggedon · 24/01/2026 01:59

I don't dye it myself, but DH does it for me maybe 4 times a year? I dye it a medium brown but my natural colour always shows through so I always get red highlights after a week or so.

UpMyself · 24/01/2026 02:07

Use a tone on tone one. Box dyes can look a bit flat.

Giraffehaver · 24/01/2026 02:10

My hair has been every colour under the sun. I'm pregnant atm so can't be bothered with it but as soon as baby is home, it'll be plum.
I choose colours which are obviously not my natural colour. Why spend all that money and effort for some boring mousy nonsense?

jamandcustard · 24/01/2026 07:40

Yep, I’ve dyed it all sorts of colours over the years - I do my own haircuts as well. Don’t think I’ve stepped foot in a hairdressers since my wedding day.

For clarity, I’m autistic and find the hairdressing experience to be incredibly unpleasant. If I do it myself at home I can control it a lot more.

WhatNoRaisins · 24/01/2026 07:50

I use semi permanent in a slightly lighter shade to cover up greys. I don't get obvious roots as the colour isn't that different to the the majority of my hair yet.

Catza · 24/01/2026 08:20

I buy professional dye and peroxide and do it at home myself. I find box dies pretty awful regardless of the brand and you have a much better selection of colours with pro dies (you can also mix them if you understand the numbering system).
I use Maxima and typically mix half and half 10N (natural light blond) and 8.44 (medium-light intense copper) to get a light natural copper. If you normally have your hair cut at the salon, you can have a chat with your hairdresser about level and tone they recommend. I was very open with mine, said I can't afford to see her for colour but would love her advice and she was happy to figure out the formula with me.

moondusteverywhere · 24/01/2026 08:22

Yes, I use professional dyes only. Currently, I am using Inoa and I use a combination of 4 different shades - 9,8, 8.3 and 9.3.

I use the K18 mist prior to dying which prevents damage and the combo of these colours is stunning - its a beautiful honey/wheat blonde which really shimmers with various tones.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 24/01/2026 08:25

I do and I recommend going lighter than your natural colour. I’m dark brown but I go for a lighter brown using the box as a guide as the dark brown tends to look false and harsh. The lighter colour gives my hair more texture if that makes sense.

parkezvous · 23/01/2026 22:54

I use a semi perm on my roots every 4 weeks which keeps it looking ok until I see the hairdresser once every 3 months. Couldn’t afford more!

That’s my approach too. Using professional toner afterwards has been a game changer, so admittedly I spend more than the proverbial fiver, but I’m happy with the results.

GU24Mum · 24/01/2026 08:32

I used to use Casting Crème Gloss but this time I’ve been to Sally and they talked me through various options. I’ve used Wella Koleston and separately bought the developer. The paintbrush things are good as you can use one end to comb really small amount each time then paint it on. Agree that you need better gloves too. You’ll be fine!

50NotFat · 24/01/2026 08:34

Ive done my own hair dye on and off for years, especially since lockdown. I dye mine medium warm auburn. I have it on subscription with Amazon, pay around £11/12 for 2 boxes and dye it once a fortnight.

LookingThroughGlass · 24/01/2026 08:35

Yes, I do.

Why? I do not trust hair dressers. I have not been to a hairdresser since July 1989.

What colour? "Menopause mahogany" 😄

Does it look natural? No, but as long as I keep up with the roots it passes for brown hair that's been intentionally highlighted reddish rather than grey hair.

PinkiOcelot · 24/01/2026 08:40

Wishmeloveawishingwellkissandtell · 23/01/2026 22:55

Do you have full colour all over?

Yes. Full head.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 24/01/2026 08:43

Where are you all based for those salon prices? 😬
Here up north, I pay £35 for regrowth and blow dry every 6-8weeks.
I've tried doing my own over the years, but I'm so rubbish I can't manage the roots only (have brushes, all the equipment) and just end up washing it in like a shampoo.
Inevitably it breaks, snaps off.
It's a shame as I enjoy the routine at home.
It's the only thing I do though as I don't have nails or any other beauty treatments.
Doesn't interest me.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 24/01/2026 08:48

Yes. I have done but using salon products. I usually have highlights twice a year, a toner does the job if I need a top up.
If you are using a dark colour, rub plenty of moisturiser around the hairline 10
minutes before applying, reduces face/neck staining.

Missingpate · 24/01/2026 08:53

I have box dyed for 20 years. I use L’Oreal’s Casting Crème Gloss and usually a dark brown but have tried various over the years. I only do it about 4 x a year, both because I’m lazy and I worry about the chemicals, so tend to plan to do it when I have a lot of social events coming up and then leave it for as long as I can bear it before it’s getting too many greys and too dull to cope with then I do it again. Works fine, I like how it looks. Couldn’t possibly afford salon prices, I only get my hair cut a couple of times a year at most as well.

Sievecandle · 24/01/2026 08:53

I use Daniel Field watercolour dye. It's great - it leaves my hair in a lovely condition and covers the grey nicely. Hair is about 30% grey and wavy so I don't get a very obvious solid regrowth line and I dye it approx every 6 weeks. I would go lighter than you think to begin with, as box dyes can sometimes be darker than they look.

DominoLover51 · 24/01/2026 08:56

Yes, I’ve been dying my hair bright colours for years, currently pink. I usually buy dye from Afro-Caribbean shops. So much cheaper and I love just being able to put my dye on and get on with something else

EmeraldShamrock000 · 24/01/2026 08:56

I would mix a small bit separately, concentrate on grey, roots, hairline and behind ears, once they are colouring for 20 minutes, throw the rest all over even coverage.
