If so, why and what colour?

I used to do it for fun when younger, but now at 48 have a fair few greys so will do again, does it look natural?

Yes I have for years. I use blonde but use a slightly different shade each time so it picks up multi tones and doesn't look "flat"

littleburn · 24/01/2026 09:03

I use henna - It’s Pure in natural brown - as it leaves my hair in lovely condition. Full root to tip dye every 3 months and roots every 2/3 weeks (as brown hair and about 50% grey). The henna takes differently to the greys, so it creates a natural mix of shades rather than a single block of colour. Cost-effective as you can just mix up the amount of powder you need for roots. It is a time commitment compared to box dye though, as the henna needs to stay on for 2 hours!

IsItSnowing · 24/01/2026 09:03

I dye my own. I've had all kinds of colours. Currently a few shades lighter than my natural colour.
I have shortish hair but I did it myself even when it was longer. I just massage the dye in like shampoo and make sure I get it all over and to the roots.
You can put vaseline around the hairline if you're doing a red or a darker colours but with lighter it doesn't seem to stain. I just make sure to clean up the hairline area straight away when I've finished applying the dye.
I've only had it done a few times at the hairdresser and they don't get better results than I do. If you buy one with 100% grey coverage it works really well. I find it comes out of the grey quicker though unfortunately.

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 24/01/2026 09:08

Yes, for 30 years! I get it cut twice a year but I've never had it dyed professionally.

Mcdhotchoc · 24/01/2026 09:11

I am 58 and have very short hair. It would never be worth having dyed at a salon as it needs doing every 4 weeks.
I use a box dye, non permanent, in a medium cool brown colour. I would like to transition to a dark grey colour (same sort of colour as Dawn French) but that will still involve dye ( my natural grey is very patchy).

KimberleyClark · 24/01/2026 09:12

I used to but got fed up of messing up my bathroom. I now have too much grey for box dyes to do the job but not enough to embrace it. The grey is mostly on top and at the front. So I'd rather pay an expert to colour it and put a few subtle highlights through.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 24/01/2026 09:12

Yes I do. Light ash blonde. Been colouring my own hair for nearly 40 years.

BubblesandTiara · 24/01/2026 09:20

I think the main thing when you home dye is to religiously do the allergy test you are supposed to do

Wickedlittledancer · 24/01/2026 09:21

Yes I use Josh woods, I’m brunette though, and I suspect it is easier for brunettes than blondes, my hair has a lot of tone in it, it’s not flat and pretty much my natural colour. I do it monthly.

it is more expensive than the L’Oréal etc, which I used to use, but this is way better and leaves the hair in fab condition and doesn’t fade so quickly.

I used to, tho couldn’t do effectively, and ruined a few duvet covers and stuff, my friend then did it for ages.
Went to hairdressers to have it done, last time a pale blue/ lilac, wasn’t great, decided to go grey, it’s ok, and I feel free, I’m 63

Which ones do you use please?

Happyjoe · 24/01/2026 09:34

Yeah, for years. I loathe going to the hairdressers. I was a punk so would dye it at home in my youth, then although mowhawk long gone, still dye it.
Tbh, it's a gamble sometimes. The colour result not matching the photo so I advise if you get one that you like, keep the top of the carton so remember which one it is, lol. Unlike me who stands by the many box dyes with menopause memory and nearly always picks up the wrong one!

Evaporateandlisten · 24/01/2026 09:39

I used to but my hair looks a lot healthier now I have it professionally done.

2old4thispoo · 24/01/2026 09:43

No, it rarely looks natural.

Personally if I cant afford to get my hair coloured professionally I will stop colouring it.

ChapmanFarm · 24/01/2026 09:44

AppropriateAdult · 24/01/2026 01:09

Yes, have been doing it for years - would have been completely grey since my late 20s otherwise. My natural colour was dark brown, so I dye it a dark brown (permanent) every 4-6 weeks, and once I’ve washed it for the second time after dyeing it looks fairly natural. I have tried a lighter brown from time to time but there’s always too much red in it, which I don’t like.
Like other posters, I’ve had it done at a hairdresser from time to time and just don’t feel it’s worth the time and money to look not very different from what I can achieve at home.

This is my approach now as well. I have to go darker than I really like and I'm not keen for the first couple of washes but after that it looks fine for several months.

If I go for the more medium or ash colours they just end up red and although it looks better when first done, that only lasts a week or two before it starts to look brassy.

I've found Olia to be the darkest brown without it being too black in tone (well after the first wash anyway).

Lennonjingles · 24/01/2026 09:45

I’ve home dyed my hair for about 25 years. I have thick straight hair which helps, originally mid brown, so I dye it mid blonde so it covers my grey. I dye it every 8/10 weeks, my hairdresser says I do a good job and the coverage is good. I start by dividing up hair and do roots first, then all over for last 20 minutes. I use Lloreal Preferance.

80smonster · 24/01/2026 09:47

I have cut, blow dry and highlights/low lights in a honey-ish old money blonde every 3 months at my hairdressers, then tone myself using https://www.superdrug.com/hair/hair-colourants/semi-permanent/glaze-supergloss-toning-conditioning-glosshoney-blonde-190ml/p/827063 I find applying once a month keeps everything looking good. I have very thick wavy hair and have only ever dyed it a weird orange shade with home box dye.

TickTickTock · 24/01/2026 09:47

No. I hardly spend anything on my appearance, so my hair colour is the one thing I allow myself to have. I have a home hairdresser who comes every 6 weeks. She'll do my roots one time, and the next time a full head of colour. It works really well for me but it's more expensive of course. She's brilliant with the colour though and she manages to blend it all perfectly. I don't think I could achieve the same with a home die kit

ChapmanFarm · 24/01/2026 09:47

KimberleyClark · 24/01/2026 09:12

I always rinse mine in the stainless steel sink before going in the shower. Bathroom stays nice and clean that way.

Gloriia · 24/01/2026 09:49

I use semi permanent, leave it on long enough and they cover any greys then you get all all over fade rather than that obvious growth at the roots with a permanent.

I just cba wirh hairdressers, not so much the cost but the time involved all that faffing on and once you start that route you're committed to at least every 8 weeks redo.

Mosaic80 · 24/01/2026 09:49

I use esalon which is meant to be professionally mixed and I do like it. It doesn’t go super saturated and dark over time like some box dyes and you can ask them to adjust it if it’s not quite right. I use a golden brown and have mid to dark brown hair with maybe 15 % or so greys. I do my roots about monthly and only mix half the pack but could reduce to 1/3 probably as it’s a fairly generous amount. I’ve added a pic.

Do you home dye your hair?
JadeSeahorse · 24/01/2026 09:51

I started dyeing my hair at home after one disaster at the hairdresser over 20 years ago.

I always used to use Clairol Nice n easy, which was fine, until 2 years ago when I was overseas and could only find Garnier Nutrisse in light brown. What a revelation!

I am 70 now so obviously have quite a bit of grey. I use Nutrisse roughly every 6 weeks but find the greys start poking through after 2 weeks so I use Root Perfect light brown to keep roots fresh until the next dye session. I

I feel I have become a bit of an expert over the years now as I don't have any mess or accidents and my hairdresser - who trims my hair every 8 weeks - raves about my colour and condition.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 24/01/2026 09:54

I dye mine every 2 months from home with dark brown hair dye. My greys are getting worse though. Maybe 20% so probably should do it more often but I can't be bothered. 😂🙈 I try to use the same dye and colour. I do the roots first, leave for 20mins and then put the rest on my ends and leave for a further 5 (instructions on the box).

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 24/01/2026 10:02

I do my own roots at home with a semi permanent in between getting highlights done at the hairdressers every 3-4 months.

I use a dark blonde/ very light brown, so it lifts very well when they bleach it with highlights. I’m pretty happy with the results, as I still get the lovely highlighed effect on the rest of my hair and it blends well.

Would love to get my roots done professionally every month, but it would cost a fortune, so this will have to do.

phoenixrosehere · 24/01/2026 10:08

Yes but it’s blue-ish green, well.. the bleached bits are so about 30-40% of my hair and my natural colour darkest brown.

I use Bleach London conditioner and found the colour I needed for £2 a bottle at Superdrug so stocked up. I typically only need to refresh a handful of times a year because the colour dulls slowly. The moment it starts to look brassy, I pull out the colour conditioner. I sometimes mix other colours (Adore) into the conditioner of the same family with great results.

Want to try using Directions for hair colour but after I’ve used the others up.
