If so, why and what colour?

I used to do it for fun when younger, but now at 48 have a fair few greys so will do again, does it look natural?

I use Surya Brasil Henna Cream. I only have a little grey but it works to cover that for now. I like that henna is a good product for the condition of your hair and it always feels shinier and thicker after I've used it. I do keep it on longer than it says on the pack and the colour seems to last a month or more.

Beebopwasthebest · 24/01/2026 13:30

I am 47, had very dark hair and started dyeing it at home about age 30. I made a mess of it and ruined towels and paint work in bathroom. I then had it dyed at the hair dressers for last 12 years.

It started looking too dark and artificial and didn't suit me any longer so I had grey blending done.

It suits me much more and no more being beholden to hiding the strip. It feels quite freeing.

I think currently, embracing the grey and "styling it out" is sort in on trend..so feel lucky in my timing. I wish I'd done it sooner

Yeah I dye mine dark brown which is my natural colour to cover my greys. You’re lucky if you only have a few at 48! I’m 46 and while it’s not that bad yet, I’m definitely troubled by grey along my parting and at my hairline particular around my temples. It looks natural enough now I think but at some point I’m going to have to think about how I’m going to approach this longer term. I don’t want to be dark brown in my sixties when it will start to look unnatural if not before

Still damp from shower, but no damage. I've home dyed for 30 years, no issues.

No, hairdressers to paint my plentiful mid 40s grey roots every 3 weeks without fail for £40 a time. I would cancel all other beauty appointments before I cancelled my hair colour appt if money became an issue. The colour is better than a box dye and I no longer ruin clothes, towels or bathroom worktops.

That looks lovely! Can't believe it's a box do, its so multi tonal. Which brand do you mind me asking?

Squirrelsnut · 24/01/2026 15:02

Castings. I'm about 10% grey underneath, mainly the temples.

Oldgoatinaboat · 24/01/2026 15:28

Do it yourself at home and you will save yourself a fortune if you just dye a solid colour. Forget off the shelf box dyes. Use koleston perfect which you mix yourself at a 1:1 ratio with the welloxon developer. You will need to have digital scales and invest in a little mixing bowl, mini whisk and a brush. Can also do in comfort of your own home and can just do a hairline touch up so easily by only mixing up 10 or 20g of dye

PeopleTheyAintNoGood · 24/01/2026 00:05

If you've only a few grey hairs, I'd recommend just brushing dye through the ones around your hairline in your colour.

You can just mix a little of the dye up and put it through with a mascara type brush.

This. With box dyes, they usually give equal amounts of colour and developer. I use a proper measuring spoon and mix equal portions of each liquid in a plastic bowl. You can buy a proper plastic brush with a long handle like hairdressers use and just paint it on where needed. Run a comb through it to stop it being blocky. Tighten the cap on the remaining liquids and keep it for the next time.

Yes I dye mine myself now. Not because of money because I can afford it but I hate going to hairdressers, I don’t find it a treat or relaxing, I find it a chore and I dreaded going. Partly because I’m anti social.

I have very dark brown hair so my routine is.
Root touch up every 4-6 weeks.
All over box dye twice a year.
Hair dressers for a wash cut and blow dry whenever I feel like it needs it.

It is a chore and it takes soooo long how come a home box dye can be on and off within 45min or less at the hairdressers you can be sat there hours.

I have dyed my hair myself since I was 16 (now in my 50s). I have always used nice n easy permanent dye. The dye colour I use is very close to my own natural colour (or what it used to be - got some grey now), just a bit redder. Why? Because my natural colour is quite boring but the redder shade is great. I have long hair so when I touch up I only dye the hair around my scalp. I then have about a third to a quarter of the dye leftover, water it down by filling up to the top of the applicator again with plain water then do the rest of my hair (which is still dyed from last time). Looks great I think (and others do too). I dye again once i see roots - maybe 8 weeks or so, or even longer. As it is close to my own colour I can go quite a while before it looks needed. I have less time between dyes now than before I got grey hairs. I have never dyed my hair in a salon. In fact, I think the box dyes have got a lot better over time and look more natural now with some colour variation built in. I would say if you are dying close to your own colour, or a bit darker, it should be fine from a box and way, way, cheaper. If you are making a drastic change or particularly going a lot lighter (from dark hair to blond for example), I would go to a salon. Do the strand test the first time before you go ahead.

Yes, I haven’t been to a hairdresser in years.

This is mine with about 6 weeks of regrowth.

I use Clairol Nice n Easy 6RB.

In between colours I use Schwarzkopf Live Colour semi permanent in Aztec Copper mixed with a hair mask, to refresh to colour as red fades so fast. To cover greys in the regrowth I use L’Oréal Magic Retouch spray.

Wow! Your hair is stunning!

Branwells77 · 25/01/2026 08:06

I used to dye my own hair but I ended up with a lot of colour block and my hair just got darker and darker so I now get it done at a hair dressers every 5 weeks but I don’t always get a full head colour as it’s not needed and it causes a colour block so my advice would be if you are going to do it at home do your first full head colour then just do root touch ups my hair is very fine and doesn’t grow very fast so it does depend on your hair but I would definitely avoid doing full head colour regularly as I think you will end up needing a hair dresser to strip your colour and start again after sometime hope this makes sense
(medium brown which lead to very dark brown nearly black)

Zanatdy · 25/01/2026 08:12

No as it doesn’t last long and my greys are coming through thick and fast. I go to a salon every 3 months, expensive but I found the box dyes lasted a few weeks max.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/01/2026 14:04

I tried using a home colour in lockdown when I couldn’t get to a hair salon but I have highlights now which are hard to do yourself at home so I go
to a salon.

Maggee · 25/01/2026 14:12

Yes, I’ve always done my hair myself & I’m confident doing it. I haven’t been to a salon in about 20 years.

I used to balayage my hair and add highlights/lowlights for years. I even went a full coppery colour a few years back. I know a hair salon would do a more professional job obviously, but my hair has always looked pretty decent.

I realised I looked better and more youthful darker and have gone back to my natural brunette colour now, so I just retouch my roots every 6/7 weeks to blend some pesky greys sneaking through.

I think the main thing when you home dye is to religiously do the allergy test you are supposed to do

I do mine at home every five weeks or so and I never do a patch test. (Casting Creme 618 - a sort of cool light brown.)

If every exposure to hair dye increases the likelihood of a reaction (I believe it’s cumulative, so the more you use it, the more likely you are to react), I don’t want to expose myself twice, 48 hours apart, per dye job. And if you can react having never reacted to the same product before, I don’t really see the value of a patch test as reassurance. Surely we all just run the risk that any time could be our time to react, patch test or no?

Muffsies · 25/01/2026 14:26

I'm pretty lucky that I have strawberry blonde hair, so it just gradually fades to white as you get older. No grey salt & pepper stage. I'm 48 now and it still has some of the ginger colour at the back, bit at the front it light blonde. I use a semi-permanent wash in/wash out colour from Wella to keep the ginger tones even.

It's called Wella Colour Fresh - Peach Blush, and you just put it on after shampooing and leave for up to 10mins. There's no smell and it leaves hair conditioned and undamaged. It lasts a week and is the most natural stawberry blonde tone I have found. It's not orange, it's a natual pinky/peach which tones my yellowy-blone hair back to strawberry blonde. Even my mum hasn't noticed that I'm using a dye.

Wella do loads of other colours for keeping dyed or faded hair looking fresh. I can usually find it discounted on Parfumdreams ir LookFantastic. It's so good I keep a stock incase they ever discontinue it.

ednakenneth · 25/01/2026 17:59

I buy my hair dye from esalon and have done for several years. They tailor fit it to your desires and they send it on your chosen frequency. I have mine every six weeks. It's £25 plus pp.
It's great and makes your hair less harsher than box dyes which I have tried and a friend said the esalon was better. Take a look at their website and see what you think.

Wishmeloveawishingwellkissandtell · 23/01/2026 22:55

Do you have full colour all over?

Used to do it myself for years but as you get more grey it gets harder to cover and the home dyes last so long. I did mine all over. Gone back to getting it done by hairdresser as coverage is better now I am 40 percent grey

MammaBear1 · 25/01/2026 18:24

I used to, years ago. Because I have really thick hair, it’s difficult so I started to have it done in the salon.
Now I’m tired of all the rigmarole and I’ve not had it coloured for about 2 years. Greys are coming in nicely and I really don’t care.

UndoRedo · 25/01/2026 18:26

I use professional dye, 9.0 and developer. It covers my greys much more effectively, and cheaper than box dyes. Also can choose developer strength if want to lighten it more

Callipygion · 25/01/2026 18:41

I do mine. I get a Clairol one from B&M, it’s about £4. I used to go to the hairdressers but started doing it myself in lockdown and have carried on as I really hate going to the hairdressers! I don’t think it looks blocky, people are usually surprised when they find out it’s dyed (although they might just be being polite 🤣)

cornflakecrunchie · 25/01/2026 18:52

Clairol Nice n Easy at home, my hair is very long, it's no faff, so easy. Some of my hair is mousy, the top is white, it covers everything. I usually use a goldy blonde shade.
I hate going to the hairdressers too!
