If so, why and what colour?

I used to do it for fun when younger, but now at 48 have a fair few greys so will do again, does it look natural?

I do, and have done for years.

I'm naturally a mousy blonde-brown, and tend to dye it to a mid-blonde. So now wildly different from my natural shade.
I've never had it done in a salon, so I don't know what I'm missing, but I've never had any issue with at-home dye.

WIth regard to grey hairs, I'm 41 and do have a few (but nowhere near as many as a number of my friends who are my age and have loads!), but am not ready to embrace them quite yet.

The thing is, I feel more myself with lighter hair, as that's the colour it was when I was a child/teenager, and I just feel like it's the colour that suits me best.

FairyGardensx · 24/01/2026 10:39

I did years ago, until i got a reaction from it.
So I stopped it shaved my head and started again.
Never dye it again.
I now have healthy natural hair i do have greys but im ok with it.

My hair has been box dyed for 30 years a very similar colour to that posted by Zov (lighter than mine was pre-grey). Initially I combed the dye through too readily so the ends of my hair with a build up had a greenish cast. This can be remedied with tomato ketchup - yes, really. Go a shade or two lighter to match your eyebrows, only dye the regrowth and ask your other half or a friend to do the back of your head are my tips. L’Oreal Preference works for me every 3 - 4 weeks. Shades ending in 0 have an ash base, those ending in 3 a more reddish base I’ve been told.

Mum2Fergus · 24/01/2026 11:00

Yes, and the most unnatural shade of red you can imagine lol I do because it’s cheaper and hate the thought of the hours wasted sat in a salon chair.

Lostsadandconfused · 24/01/2026 11:05

Yes, I haven’t been to a hairdresser in years.

This is mine with about 6 weeks of regrowth.

I use Clairol Nice n Easy 6RB.

In between colours I use Schwarzkopf Live Colour semi permanent in Aztec Copper mixed with a hair mask, to refresh to colour as red fades so fast. To cover greys in the regrowth I use L’Oréal Magic Retouch spray.

I use esalon which is meant to be professionally mixed and I do like it. It doesn’t go super saturated and dark over time like some box dyes and you can ask them to adjust it if it’s not quite right. I use a golden brown and have mid to dark brown hair with maybe 15 % or so greys. I do my roots about monthly and only mix half the pack but could reduce to 1/3 probably as it’s a fairly generous amount. I’ve added a pic.

your hair does look really pretty!

Sunloungerhogger · 24/01/2026 11:12

Yes, but my hair is red (naturally) and I use henna. My colour had faded and was not as bright copper as when I was younger, plus I have a decent amount of white particularly at my hairline and parting which I hate - I’m not ready to embrace the natural grey yet! I never particularly loved the colour my previous hairdresser made it, wasn’t quite what I felt it was naturally when I was younger, plus it cost a fortune, took ages and I feel like I start noticing my roots from about week 3 - I don’t have the time and money to go to the hairdressers say every 4 weeks. Henna seems to have restored it to what I believe was my natural colour when I was younger, costs v v little to touch up my roots and has the added benefit of actually being quite conditioning for the hair.

Which ones do you use please?

I'm really not loyal to brands , I just get whatever is on offer. Superdug tend to have offers on.

mugglewump · 24/01/2026 11:14

I used to get highlights and lowlights from a salon, but about a decade ago I started finding my roots were so grey, I needed more frequent colour than the every couple of months I was getting it done. I tried a home dye silver shade to embrace the grey but it just made me look older, so now my hair is a dusky, pastel light pink colour. I have never had so many compliments about my hair!

Duveet · 24/01/2026 11:16

I use a Loreal Cadtings mid brown, its great.
I hate the hairdresser and couldn't be sitting for hours for a brown all over cover.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/01/2026 11:18

I cant dye at home I have too much white hair and it doesn't cover it. I have balyage at the salon to avoid obvious roots. My white hair doesn't suit me and makes me feel older than I am.

PGmicstand · 24/01/2026 11:20

Yes, usually red, but I have a nice purple dye in the cupboard I'm itching to use.

MightyGoldBear · 24/01/2026 11:23

I tone my hair at home and will use semi permanent fun colours but not box dye. I'd rather see the hair dresser every 3 months than have to re do it every month or more as I'm a good 75% grey on my parting but dark underneath. My hairdresser is really good at grey blending and working with my silver growth so it looks seamless. The idea is that I can go longer and longer between sessions. It's more a helping hand to growing it out than full on highlights or low lights.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 24/01/2026 11:26

Yes, ash blonde. Hairdresser says I do a fabulous job a d can't beleive I do it myself

honeylulu · 24/01/2026 11:33

Yes, Clairol box dye in Ash Brown which is a match to my natural colour. I do it to cover up greys about every 4-5 weeks. It's so easy though I have very straight hair so it's easy to comb through and get even coverage. It makes it looks glossier too, at least in the first couple of weeks (that may be the colour seal conditioner that's included in the box).

I've had it done at the hairdresser in the past but it costs a small fortune and doesn't look any different to when I do it at home, so box dye it is!

Hankunamatata · 24/01/2026 11:37

I have dark hair and have smattering of grey so I dye it.
Usually dye auburn then when grown out I like the effect of the darker roots and use magic retouch to take edge of the greys so don't have to dye as often.

Hiptothisjive · 24/01/2026 11:39

Super easy, looks natural and saves a lot of time. It’s not the money for me it’s the time spent sitting in a chair doing nothing. I hate it so I do it at home. Doesnt look blocky - this isn’t hair dye from 1990. Why wouldn’t you do it - they make it pretty idiot proof (not saying at all that you are just saying it’s hard to go wrong).

WillHeEverStop · 24/01/2026 11:40

Yes. Looks very natural. Matches my hair exactly.
I use eSalon and Nutrint (from Holland & Barrett). I do not need to do my whole hair. Just roots. Always just roots. About 10% - 15% grey.

Mustreadabook · 24/01/2026 11:41

I use the semi permanant one that should wash out but doesn't but it does fade enough that I don't get a line if I don't do it. I use a slightly reddish, warmer colour over my boring brown hair so that it looks like I'm doing it for fun, but not loads different so there are not roots. Only a bit of grey at the edges at the moment though

Squirrelsnut · 24/01/2026 11:45

Yes, always. It looks nice. Modern box dyes have different tones in them. I've been using a semi every 6 weeks or so, no ammonia so my hair's fine, in fact it seems to condition it!

Squirrelsnut · 24/01/2026 11:45

Castings

PluckyChancer · 24/01/2026 11:50

Yes, but I lighten and colour my hair, I don’t dye it. 😂

I’m a Pro and buy pro brand colour products from the hairdressing wholesalers. I have very short hair so it’s not an issue if I overlap the product occasionally.

Remembertobekind · 24/01/2026 11:54

I have long hair and I couldn't face trying to dye it at home. I do dye my eyebrows at home to hide the grey and harmonise with my lighter hair. I caught a glimpse of myself in a photograph with cascading blonde hair and a set of fierce black eyebrows and realised I had to do something.

Howdidlifegetsobusy · 24/01/2026 12:48

I have always coloured at home. I have switched from box dye to using e-salon. You can send them pictures to geo colour match your hair.
first time is all over colour and then I do roots only, with a lengths every 3rd dye.
my roots are showing more grey now so I do it every 6 weeks, but also depends how close to natural colour you use.
my hair is also quite fine, so I find I only actually need to use half the colour and developer each time.
i always use a tinting brush and bowl (did have a teenage sat job in hairdressers, so was used to watching root colour being applied).

Coffeislife · 24/01/2026 12:53

I've always done my own i think ive only ever had highlights at hair dressers once.

Im currently champagne blonde from medium to dark brown. All I need to do is my roots with a none bleach then I use a gloss to blend it out. Roots are coming through more grey each time.

Key important things for it looking natural is your current hair colour and it's undertone, and your skin tone.
