Is her child intelligent?

My mum friend who has a child who's two months shy of 3 years has stated he's really intelligent.

Nothing out of the ordinary to warrenty mensa, just seems like a normal child. If she misses a page of a book he will notice and in "the higher group" at nursery. Not sure what that is as they have two rooms.

Aibu in thinking she's bat shit crazy?

And no I don't like her

YABU to even care. Just go “oh that’s nice” and then ignore.

Overthebow · 23/01/2026 18:54

Maybe he is and maybe he isn’t. Annoying though.

It doesn't work like that....

NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/01/2026 18:55

She's a twat.

Why not? I’d you ignore it she might stop.

CantThinkofaNam · 23/01/2026 18:56

Do you really want to start a thread picking apart a 3yo? Off course you would know that she is just insecure and doing this, so what’s the point?

Overthebow · 23/01/2026 18:57

And what is a higher room at nursery? Don’t they go by age rather than intelligence?

I don't know what she means by it.... Surely they just group

Why doesn't it work like that...

She might be right he may well be very switched on, perceptive and intelligent. Either way every parent likes to think their child is amazing so that response is accurate for any interaction you will have regarding children as they grow up.

Because I'm not being told what I should bother about. And the irony that the poster should do the same

Poor her, it’s a hard way to live. I guess she doesn’t know that most 3 year olds notice if you skip a page of a story they know.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 23/01/2026 18:59

Everyone thinks their kid is special. No big deal

Every kid is special.... But intelligent?

YABU to describe her as a “mum friend” then state you don’t like her.

Don’t be two faced. If you don’t like her, don’t talk to her etc.

Yes I’d say most mums overestimate their child’s intelligence too tbh.

Ponoka7 · 23/01/2026 19:02

But why does it matter to you? Intelligence can show early, but that's different than being academic. Children develop at different ages, have different skills etc. Perhaps the Nursery is pushing early school work, based on ability. The child could level off and another child take off, by eight. It's nice for her if her child is meeting targets, as said, just say something non committal.

Why does my question bother you?

I remember announcing to my husband that I thought our 20 month old was gifted 🙈. 2 minutes later she walked into a wall with a bucket on her head! Definitely a case of pfb, but I was ever so proud of my baby.
Maybe she is the same.

I'm not being too faced. She's someone I meet only as we have children. She messages constantly and I'm on the verge of blocking
