In thinking morbidly obese women should not be trying to concieve?

I think it is incredibly selfish and feel that if they cannot (or will not) lose weight they should not have a baby. Much like smokers, alcoholics and drug users - if they cannot make an effort to be healthy for a pregnancy things will not improve once the baby is born.

Sadly, Twelvelegs, I don't have Sky or smoke. I'm a teacher but I am currently at home looking after the tiddler. I do read a lot, though, does that count??!!

Twelvelegs · 13/06/2008 14:50

Sweden had the right idea with their mass sterilisation, lets start with the obviously unsuitable (the fatties that you can see) then the smokers, they're easy to spot gathering outside doorways....... phew then check for needle marks (stuff the diabetics) and alcoholics ( I know a few!!).

southeastastra · 13/06/2008 14:51

what a shitty op, who made you god

wotulookinat · 13/06/2008 14:52

I think skinny people shouldn't be allowed to have kids.

oh shit does this mean I should put my kids up for adoption now or is it only the risk of being pregnant and making the NHS pay for my fat ass I need to worry about??

wotulookinat · 13/06/2008 14:52

Or those women who fit straight back into a size 10 after having a baby. They should have their kids taken away. Bitches, all of them (mutter mutter mutter)

wotulookinat · 13/06/2008 14:53

Or hayfever sufferers. Sneezy feckers breeding everywhere.

bonkerz · 13/06/2008 14:53

Im morbidly obese, have 2 beautiful children and im not selfish at all. i do everything with my DCs that a non morbidly obese mummy does INFACT i go swimming with DD and my size 8 freind refuses to get in a swimming costume to take herr DD!!!!!!!
I had no diabetes, i had no complications except SPD but im sure alot of 'normal sized' pregnant women get that!
I gave up alcohol during my pregnancies and dont smoke or do drugs anyway! I actually LOST 3 stone whilst pregnant!!!!!

Personnaly i think people like the OP who find it their job to judge and preach to everyone else should be the ones to NOT HAVE KIDS!!!!

rebelmum1 · 13/06/2008 14:53

look Hmmm not in the same league as drug addiction other than the byproduct is ill health. Do you agree it's unhealthy?

Twelvelegs · 13/06/2008 14:53

The Hedge witch, I do think that it is more likely your children will be overweight... I don't think you shouldn't have them at all. It may mean however that your children are less judgemental about the scapegoat of British society (overweight people). I think we all have a duty to be the best we can for our children and I can't see that being morbidly obese does that, that goes for many issues not just weight by the way.

wotulookinat · 13/06/2008 14:54

IN fact, no-one should have kids. Selfish sods.

AtheneNoctua · 13/06/2008 14:55

Yeah, and I think they should have to buy two plane tickets because quite franly they are crowding my space. Oh, and increased road tax because it costs a lot more petrol to drag them around. In fact, maybe they ought to walk everywhere anyway...

beansmum · 13/06/2008 14:56

Of course obese women shouldn't stop trying to conceive if they really want a baby. But they should be aware of the risks. And if they ARE aware of the risks (increased risk of pre-eclampsia, stillbirth, caesarean delivery, instrumental delivery, shoulder dystocia, meconium aspiration, fetal distress and early neonatal death for starters) and don't try to lose weight I think they are a bit selfish tbh. Just like mothers who smoke during pregnancy, it is hard to give up, just like it's hard to lose weight, but you should try at least.

wotulookinat · 13/06/2008 14:56

I hope you're joking, Athene.

Sawyer64 · 13/06/2008 14:56

Being "overweight" and being " Morbidly Obese" are "terms" governed by a weight chart at the GP's.You may think you are "overwight" but might actually be "Morbidly obese".

Anyway, apart from the health point of view,How does it stop you being a good and loving Mum?

The skinnest people can still be at high risk of life threatening illness. If we have to think about how long we might be around for,all of us would be scared to ttc!!!

As someone has already mentioned, maybe having a baby makes you more aware of your health, and be more motivated, with a LO,to try and do something about it!

AtheneNoctua · 13/06/2008 14:57

In fact it appears Gordon has actually missed a trick. We could have a fat tax.

MissChief · 13/06/2008 14:57

oh FGS! Title says "morbidly obese" not fat, quite fat or a little bit chubby! Some people seem to have reacted a little sensitively, IMHO.

Morbid obesity is a life-threatening condition for mother and therefore baby so of course not a good idea to get pregnant until a safer weight is reached. Don't see what there is to be debate here if we've got our rational heads on.

AtheneNoctua · 13/06/2008 14:57

Of course I was joking, hence the ""

MissChief · 13/06/2008 14:58

wotulookinat · 13/06/2008 14:58

And a tall tax.
And a tax for people who use the internet all day

wotulookinat · 13/06/2008 14:59

MissChief, when have you encountered a rational person on MN? (apart from me of course, but don't listen to me, I'm fat!)

AtheneNoctua · 13/06/2008 15:01

Can we have an idiot tax, too? I think stupid people should compensate me for having to put up with them in my daily life.
