HH income of £250k but we don’t feel rich?

Not a brag in the slightest! And wouldn’t discuss this non-anonymously.

DH earns just over £250k per year. Has fallen into the role really and is based on natural ability/talent as oppose to lots of hard work and training. He works very long hours though. I’m a SAHM to 3 young children.

Take home is approx £12k per month.

School fees: £3,000 per month
Mortgage, car and bills: £3500 per month
Personal savings £2000 per month
Kids savings: £450 per month
DH and I take: £500 personal money each per month
Leaves us with £2,000 per month for general spending, food shopping, days out, holidays, children’s clothes…

We don’t really go without, but we don’t feel “well off” by any means. Where are we going wrong?!

I earn under 20k a year...I would say it's a matter of perspective, plus the fact that you're putting a large amount into savings every month...

I’m sure this is a piss take but the private school is the problem. I would not pay for private school at that income, it is a huge %of your monthly take home and is only going to go up. Plus you end up socializing with the other parents many of who will be actually rich, pulling in 7 figures and that makes you feel poor in comparison even though you are clearly not. Living the lifestyle we used to think of as coming for 250k takes 1mm now
and is out of reach for almost everyone (unless you believe what you see on social media!)
Maybe OP also feels insecure because her H is the one earning it all. That is incredibly risky to me, layoffs etc can happen to anyone and that is a truly scary place to be if the other spouse isn’t bringing in any money at all.

Exactly, 2000 a month left over, with over 3000 put in savings, and 500 quid left to "play with" each isn't doing badly by any stretch of the imagination 😳

Where are you finding private school for 3 DC for £1k each per month? That seems incredibly cheap.
Outside of any special needs, we wouldn't consider private school for our 3. Even though DH taught in one for 25 years and we were offered free places for our DC there as part of his employment package.
We did not want them to have friends from wealthy families only. We wanted them to be equipped for the real world.
We have family and many friends who chose the private route and several of their DC have had issues with drugs and mental health (anorexia/anxiety etc). Far more than the kids we know who went to state school.
When your DC are competing for uni places (or even harder to access degree apprenticeship programmes) their private education may even go against them, as most top unis now offer "contextual places" (lower grades) to those from state schools.

My advice would be to find a good state school and put that £3k a month into a pension or save it towards your DC uni costs/ house deposit.

Also, get yourself some proper financial advice, that really is worth investing in.

Have you thought about setting up a justgiving or a gofundme page? People are really charitable when they see others struggling.

How much per month will it cost when all your DC are in private school?

Try putting your 2k pm in cash into a bath every month and when the notes are a foot deep get in and roll around in it.

Maybe that'll make you feel rich.

His basic salary is £200k. However he’s never taken home less than the equivalent to a £250k salary per month which is why I used this number. Some months there may be an extra couple of grand but this gets put into savings so doesn’t change our monthly spending really.
