Terms used by "influencers".. Arrrghhh!

Browsing at my Instagram this evening and feel a need to have a rant lol.
Influencers talking about Sunday night "reset" in videos about simply planning for the week ahead. I mean mundane things like ironing school uniforms, tidying up the kitchen.. Just normal tasks that are familiar to most of us. Why call it a "reset"?

Similar is when an influencer is posting videos of themselves in new clothing items.. Lets say new shirt or jacket etc. They call it a "piece". As in I got this piece in x shop..
Why not just call the item whatever it actually is?

Superficially being an influencer looks great but I bet for most of them it’s awful.

So vapid, it must be soul destroying.

And the stress of having to constantly come up with new engaging content constantly, along with the fact that everyone seems to be having a crack.

There are very few influencers who have genuinely engaging content.

I hate the nail tapping, the exaggerated loud noises, the videos where they just pull a face and have a caption over the top... Everything really!
And it isn't just a new thing but the singular trouser, boot, red lip etc drives me bonkers too.

I suppose it’s a comfort thing for Gen Z and below who only really see the world through social media, they’ve grown up watching influencers doing hauls and living lifestyles that are unrealistically unattainable for a huge cohort of their generation. They’re now living a reality drastically different to what they saw through screens so they need to insta-fy the mundane and add their little spin on the drudgery of everyday.

I feel like you all need to delete TikTok… I promise life is better without it.

Ah, so the moment a word comes from social media, it’s suddenly ‘ignorance’? Got it. By that logic, every dictionary is just a conspiracy.

I work in design and ‘colourways’ has always been a phrase. It’s been around since the 1940s.

I scroll on TikTok and the algorithm sends some my way. I scroll up on most of them but sometimes they grab my attention and I watch a bit. That said I haven’t said influencer videos per se annoy me - some of the common phrases do though.

It’s like when there’s a thread about phrases on MN you can’t stand - doesn’t mean we can’t stand MN just that certain phrases are a bit irritating!

The fake shock - wide open mouth, eyes etc.

We're supposed to believe that this video is the first time you put on those fake eyelashes or whatever and saw the result 🙄

Oh and the miming along to a song while they put their makeup on or something - drives me bonkers!

Hacks, ie normal ways of doing things, or sometimes stupid ways, purely filler content. There's a forehead always making that sort of nonsense on SM. Child exploitation usually goes hand in hand with this nonsense. The algorithm thankfully stopped showing me this stuff and now shows me good news channels and cute animals.

When it first started they consistently got more clicks and views if the thumbnail was an open mouth shocked face. Some for nefarious reasons. Nearly a decade on it's embarrassing they still do it.

I’m seeing a lot of “truly” lately. “Gatekeeping” (as in not doing it) seems at least in my YT feed to be ebbing.

This! It drives me mad, so annoying.

Also when they have their sleeves / cuffs pulled right up over their hands. I don’t know why but that really irritates me and they all do it.

The way everything is now ‘paired.’ It never used to be. You’d just put things together.
But no, now everything is paired : clothes, drink mixtures, food. It’s very annoying. 😠
