DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Sorry OP but that’s hilarious

kimbear87 · 18/01/2026 17:42

I happen to have a packet of penguins at the moment. Coincidentally it’s probably the first in 5 years… 🤷‍♀️

ApocalypseNowt · 18/01/2026 17:43

Team DH. We always have penguins, clubs or kitkats in.

ADayInTheLifeOfMe · 18/01/2026 17:44

I did buy a pack when I saw they where £1 at asda actually 😅

Bubobubo · 18/01/2026 17:44

I don't believe every household has a packet of penguins in.

Have you ever tried biting both the ends off and drinking a hot drink through it. Could that open your mind to enjoying an 8pm penguin once in a while?

TessSaysYes · 18/01/2026 17:45

Sounds more like he's nostalgic for them and likes eating them...you seem like the one going a little crazy, and I think he knows it.

countrygirl99 · 18/01/2026 17:45

Haven't had a penguin in decades.

outerspacepotato · 18/01/2026 17:45

I think it's hilarious and you're the penguin 🐧 party pooper

What does this mean 'all different players'

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 18/01/2026 17:46

I have to admit I often p.p.p.pick up a penguin!

HopSpringsEternal · 18/01/2026 17:46

I mean we never have real penguins that would be really posh.We have Arctic bars a la Aldi.
The 8pm stand up and Penguin? Would drive me insane though so yanbu about that!

WatchingWongFilms · 18/01/2026 17:46

I haven’t seen penguins in anyone’s home since the 90s probably. I had forgot they were even a thing!

Bit weird for his whole family to be obsessed with them, but it’s pretty harmless so 🤷‍♀️

FuzzyWolf · 18/01/2026 17:46

I don’t think every household has Penguins but this has reminded me that I do really like them so much get some with my next shop.

I hope your DGD enjoys her birthday. If I was a guest, I’d eat a Penguin.

I'm guessing "flavours"

Whaleandsnail6 · 18/01/2026 17:46

I think it sounds quite sweet and endearing ...a harmless quirk so leave him and his penguins alone!

LookingThroughGlass · 18/01/2026 17:47

Is your surname Popper?

Myfridgeiscool · 18/01/2026 17:47

There’s not been a packet on penguins in this house for about 5 years.
He's wrong. lol.
It does appear that he’s inherited his weird obsession.

Dolamroth · 18/01/2026 17:47

I'd rather have a breakaway or a kit kat. My mum thought Penguins were common (the biscuits not the birds) so we weren't allowed them.

wheresmymojo · 18/01/2026 17:47

No penguins here and British through and through.

I’d have to take the piss one birthday though and have a giant penguin cake made and all of his presents would just be different sized boxes wrapped up filled with varying numbers of penguin biscuits.

Oh god don’t, I hear this everytime he goes out to shop

I’m quite partial to a Penguin, but I’d be sick of them if I ate them on a daily basis. We definitely don’t have a permanent supply of them!

Inawhylcroc · 18/01/2026 17:48

Hahah I found this hilarious but equally I can see how annoying it could get. While we are all allowed to have our quirks this is a bit much :

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration

Assuming Op has seriously communicated she doesn’t find this amusing and doesn’t want to be offered one, he needs to stop doing it.

Mirabellas · 18/01/2026 17:48

YABU. We bite off opposite corners, put one corner in your tea and suck the tea through them. It was a revelation when I learned this from a flatmate at Uni many years ago 🤣

GalaxyJam · 18/01/2026 17:48

I don’t think I’ve had a Penguin since I was about 8! I’ve just asked my kids (aged between 7 and 13) and they’ve never heard of them!

BleeBlahBlue · 18/01/2026 17:48

Have you bought him a packet of TimTams yet? Same idea as penguins just taste better 🤣
