Traitors is a negative influence on society

The TV show Traitors is an example of society breaking down not just a bit of fun entertainment. It glorifies and rewards deceitful behaviour. I can’t actually believe so many people watch it and encourage their kids to watch it as if it is a good thing.

I really believe it, posting because I. Know it isn’t an acceptable view to most people and many will think I’m ridiculous but I honestly think it is a really negative influence.

Think for a moment- as a nation - this is one of the most popular family focused cultural happenings - people choose to watch and glorify a bunch of half famous random people be duplicitous to each other as if they are killing each other. This is what we choose to spend time doing and endorsing. Weird.

I remember a family game we used to play called Masterpiece, where you had to pretend you owned a £1M work of art when the actual value was £200. We loved it, it was all about trying to convince the other players to give you their money and offload your shitty old overpriced painting. My satisfaction at tricking my big brother into giving me a wodge of cash for my counterfeit Mona Lisa has never left me,

since then I haven't turned to a life of crime. In fact my career relies on trust, honesty and I have to be security vetted just in case I've fallen into a life of crime since the last time they checked me 😆

honestly OP it really doesn't work like that! Caveat I have never watched any of the Traitors series but I can just about fathom what it's all about and it's as tame as you get.

cariadlet · 17/01/2026 15:33

Monopoly has been mentioned a few times.

It was originally created by a woman called Elizabeth Magie to show how awful land grabbing was and how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants. She called it The Landlord's Game.

She ended up getting ripped off by Parker Brothers and by a man called Charles Darrow who claimed to have invented Monopoly.

The game that's played now is the antithesis of the original intention.

SheThinksShesAllThat · 17/01/2026 15:36

You mean to say you aren’t texting your mates on a wed/thur/Friday wondering who’ll get murdered . I feel sorry for you….!!!
I think it’s a great social experiment and so interesting on how people think and treat each other. You can not compare this to MAFS or Love island.

I played Monopoly at Christmas. I've now demolished my house and I'm building a hotel.

And you've turned into an iron!

ChainReactionQueen · 17/01/2026 16:07

It’s a game, not a guide for how to live. Everyone taking part knows the rules and understands that deception is part of the gameplay, not something being celebrated in real life. Like poker or a murder-mystery game, it’s about strategy and psychology within a clear framework everybody understands. Most people, including kids, can tell the difference between playing a role and real-world behaviour.

Fingalscave · 17/01/2026 16:24

I am very influenced by any tv show that I watch. I caught an episode of Naked Attraction and I've been getting some very funny looks from the neighbours.

… and then we all watch and empathise, and pay and congratulate the most duplicitous one at the end? That’s right isn’t it?

Well actually, that's only if the traitors win. The point of the game (that's what it is) is to catch the lying, deceitful traitors so that they don't win.
Its fine if you don't like it, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I find it quite a stretch to say that it is negatively effecting society!

igelkott2026 · 17/01/2026 17:06

Well it's not breaking me down as I've never seen it...

ThatCyanCat · 17/01/2026 17:19

Traitors is worth it if only for getting parodied in this week's Beano. The drawing of Claudia is brilliant.

Needlenardlenoo · 17/01/2026 18:15

Private Eye has Claudia looking at a table of dogs (with one cat) wondering who the traitor is 😂.

helplessbanana · 17/01/2026 18:34

I'd much rather children sat in their living rooms watching Traitors with their parent(s) than sitting in their bedrooms playing Roblox or Grand Theft Auto (and watching God knows what on the internet) for hours every day.

SarBe · 17/01/2026 19:06

You don't understand the concept of games then?

Goldwren1923 · 17/01/2026 19:23

It’s based on a well known party game Mafia in some parts of the world. We used to play it 20 years ago, it was such fun. There are some meet-ups in london where people still play it.

yorkshiretoffee · 17/01/2026 19:42

I used to play a card game called Cheat when I was a child.
I guess society has been breaking down for a while.

DontBeADick11 · 17/01/2026 20:23

Would much rather them watch the Traitors than watch the toxic, red flag cesspit that is Love Island

grumpygrape · 17/01/2026 20:53

I refer back to a previous poster who said if Traitors is a negative influence then we must ban Poker.

The problem, in my opinion, is that even after many series (include the US and antipodean ones) is that the poor Faithfuls still don’t seem to be able to spot the deflectors and manipulators. No wonder people are being scammed in such numbers.

I’ve not experienced anyone ‘glorifying’ Traitors winning.

LEWWSH · 17/01/2026 22:01

If you don’t want to glorify people lying, you can always root for the faithfuls and hope they win? Also, I think it’s quite good for showing (for example) how the herd mentality works - people follow others based on a hunch and are then shown to be wrong. If you want to view it as more than just a TV show and use it to promote a discussion, perhaps you could talk about people making up their own minds rather than blindly follow others? Or about the dangers of trusting people who have an agenda (eg Molly and Harry in series 2.) I do have issues with Love Island, but I think the Traitors is pretty harmless.

Did you never play wink murder/ werewolf in school or brownies? We literally used to play the game this is based off in Sunday School .. in the early 90s ..

I mean.. just about any television show can be framed in such a negative way if thats is really the spin you want to take on it ….

MrsMorrisey · 17/01/2026 23:48

I agree with you OP.

MyMiniMetro · 17/01/2026 23:58

I hate it but not for the same reasons. People think they are getting the full picture when all reality TV is manipulated by producers to tell the story they want it to tell.

10 years ago, people might have thought that but these days, almost everyone is very aware that reality tv is edited to tell a story.

Strangeencounter · 17/01/2026 10:43

What. That’s literally the premise of the game. For traitors to try to steal the prize and faithfuls to try to stop them.

You’ve missed the point of the post you’re replying to completely… They’re not trying to “steal” the prize, they’re attempting to win it! It’s a game and they’re playing it alongside everybody else…

Believing that the “faithful” are any more entitled to the prize than the “traitors” simply because Claudia didn’t touch them on the shoulder at the start of the show is ridiculous, and makes me worry that you can’t differentiate reality and fantasy at even a basic child-like level.

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 18/01/2026 08:11

A game. Breaking down society? Let’s ban Monopoly then! 🤣
