Traitors is a negative influence on society

The TV show Traitors is an example of society breaking down not just a bit of fun entertainment. It glorifies and rewards deceitful behaviour. I can’t actually believe so many people watch it and encourage their kids to watch it as if it is a good thing.

I strongly believe that capitalism is only being perpetuated by Monopoly. I can’t believe people let their kids play it!

wfhwfh · 17/01/2026 09:43

I think it shines a light on human psychology - what makes someone likeable and thus trustworthy or dislikeable and thus untrustworthy. Its obviously an artificial setting but a microcosm for society as a whole.

Seeing how often “the faithful” get it wrong should help shine light on our own biases and inaccurate perceptions.

I think it is fascinating!

Did you never watch Golden Balls with Jasper Carrott, with split or steal at the end?

Like all the MN Daily Mail readers who apparently despise it, but have to read it regularly just so they can tell us how awful it is 😁

Sadly the DM is actually a really awful destructive force and spreads fear and hate. The worst thing about the Traitors are the dull missions.

A lot of these reality programmes - however dubious the premise - show people largely cooperating and working through differences. And they’re a fabulous and glamourous distraction for the working masses who need respite from shit lives and what’s going on in the world.

No it's not right actually
Have you ever watched it?

UnhappyHobbit · 17/01/2026 09:46

I kind of see your point, but I actually see more positives in it. In our own lives, we all develop some ability to tell who is loyal to us and who isn’t. For example, people who’ve experienced narcissistic or toxic relationships, it can be especially healing to realise that anyone can be deceived and that people can lie to serve their own agendas. It helps reinforce the idea that manipulation isn’t a personal failure, it’s a human vulnerability. That awareness is a powerful lesson and one I think we should all be learning.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 17/01/2026 09:47

I happen to think it has a positive impact on society. It’s the first programme in a long time which appeals to multiple generations and is being watched by as it airs by family groups.
That’s why it was moved to 8pm (according to the rest is entertainment podcast) so that younger viewers can watch it too.

… and then we all watch and empathise, and pay and congratulate the most duplicitous one at the end? That’s right isn’t it?

So you dont play games where you try to get the better of others? Monopoly glorified high rents etc, cluedo glorified killing, game of life etc etc etc.
How you believe gladiators is wholesome, they beat the crap out of each other, but think Traitors is terrible makes me laugh.
You're way overthinking it. It's entertainment, I can't stand the soaps like Eastenders as it is all affairs and crap like that, but you seem to think thats fine 🤷‍♀️

Not necessarily, the faithful have actually won two out of three series.

Many others have said this and I can’t resist saying it myself…you seem to know an awful lot about a show you don’t watch. Maybe focus on things you do enjoy? Can’t imagine picking a random program that doesn’t interest me and bringing it up as a topic of conversation.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/01/2026 09:56

i think it is eye opening for the younger generation where everything is perfect to see real human nature flourishing, the bad, sly and ugly, they need the awareness.

Bourdic · 17/01/2026 09:56

I’ve been watching it and unreservedly enjoying it after being introduced to the celebrity version. However last nights dinner party revelations left me feeling uncomfortable - too much of a collusion of reality and game. And I found myself wondering how true their stories were - no doubt we’ll eventually find out. Have previous series used this tactic ?

ACIGC · 17/01/2026 09:57

You've missed the point. Traitors is more of a reflection of society than an influence on it. It's essentially a social experiment, just one that makes really good viewing!

grumpygrape · 17/01/2026 09:57

OP's never watched Would I Lie to You ?

Have you actually seen the show? The traitors don't always win. Indeed, on one of the Aussie series, nobody won.

Negroany · 17/01/2026 10:07

I had never seen it til the celeb one. I don't like reality shows - I think they exploit vulnerable people, and I think people who go on them have some sorts of vulnerabilities no matter how they look.

I'm not bothered about celebs doing stuff, they're not taking it seriously in the same way, plus they are paid and already in the public eye.

I do actually think it's pretty unpleasant. Agree also re MAFS (which I've never seen). One I saw a bit of one once where people talked to each other but never met and then chose a partner, then met (Love Is Blind, maybe). Not only did it seem quite vile, it was incredibly boring.

I don't think they show a breakdown in society, and I guess I don't care if other people watch them (though on balance I would prefer they didn't exist!).

Tooobvious · 17/01/2026 09:26

Except, as Joe demonstrated in Celebrity Traitors, it is vital not just to correctly identify the traitor(s) but also to be able to persuade others that you are correct. It’s particularly relevant with the rise of political demagogues, who set out to persuade others that they alone know the correct solution to the country's problems.

I think Joe's experience demonstrates how the most vocal can carry a lot of weight in persuading others, but not necessarily because they are actually correct in their statements.

I think it is wholesome with good values so all good with that!

But they are literally hitting people in the head with sticks and on older versions of the show two gladiators broke their necks

BlanketyBlankBlank · 17/01/2026 10:14

Listenup99 · 17/01/2026 00:28

I really believe it, posting because I. Know it isn’t an acceptable view to most people and many will think I’m ridiculous but I honestly think it is a really negative influence.

Think for a moment- as a nation - this is one of the most popular family focused cultural happenings - people choose to watch and glorify a bunch of half famous random people be duplicitous to each other as if they are killing each other. This is what we choose to spend time doing and endorsing. Weird.

It’s not obligatory to watch, turn over or off?

Strangeencounter · 17/01/2026 10:14

I think it’s quite an interesting philosophical question. I don’t agree with what you are saying tbh OP.

The question I find most interesting is why the faithful feel they deserve it more than the traitors. They didn’t choose their position. So why should they be excluded from the chance of winning the prize just because they are the ‘bad’ side.

Thirdtimeunlucky2025 · 17/01/2026 10:15

It’s just a game. It’s definitely better tv than a lot of the thuggery and violence in a lot of the murder mystery programs which imo give people ideas on how to do wicked deeds.

I watched a load of midsummer murders and didnt kill my neighbours, I watched a load of only fools and horses and didnt buy a 3 wheel van and start a business, I watched judge judy and didnt become an arbitor.

I watched deal or no deal and didnt become a gambling addict, I watched ex on the beach and didnt invite an ex on holiday.

I read alsorts of books and dont behave like the characters.

I play cluedo and havent solved a murder, pop up pirate and didnt stab anyone in a barrel.

It sounds daft, but it isnt dissimilar. Traitors is a game show, its a competition, its media entertainment. People hide intentions in card games and chess too. People are exposed to bad behaviour on tv shows, games and books. No one watches that and thinks best kill someone and hide it as a result. I think its one of the oldest opinions Ive heard

Purplebunnie · 17/01/2026 10:16

Listenup99 · 17/01/2026 01:03

Fine they are stories with rounded perspective not congratulating and glorifying lying and deceit like traitors.

Really! Really!

I stopped watching because most of the characters spent their lives lying to each other, doing dodgy deals ooh and murdering people. What about the character in Hollyoaks who got put a medical collar round her neck and tried to claim "compo" from someone who'd accidentally knocked into her.

The only characters who "get on" in the soaps are those who have the last word or get one over someone. Some of them never get their comeuppance.

There are probably loads of examples but as I say I stopped watching them decades ago.
