Traitors is a negative influence on society

The TV show Traitors is an example of society breaking down not just a bit of fun entertainment. It glorifies and rewards deceitful behaviour. I can’t actually believe so many people watch it and encourage their kids to watch it as if it is a good thing.

But Russell Crowe is apparently a bit of a bastard in real life.

Lol.

Enjoying the replies so far 😆 knew this would go down well. As I say I do believe it irl but know many don’t agree! I also find rhat show where people marry each other randomly and love island are also truly negative societal trends.

if you met me irl you’d have no idea im this radical btw 😎

Where do you rate East Ender's, Corrie, Emmerdale etc?

Fine they are stories with rounded perspective not congratulating and glorifying lying and deceit like traitors.

Are you on glue?

I was exposed to Allo Allo growing up. Poor DH has been subjected to an entire marriage of ribald humour. He's made peace with that but he finds being part of the Belgian Resistance tough to fit in round a full time job. But where I go, mon petit chou fleur goes too.

I really believe it, posting because I. Know it isn’t an acceptable view to most people and many will think I’m ridiculous but I honestly think it is a really negative influence.

Think for a moment- as a nation - this is one of the most popular family focused cultural happenings - people choose to watch and glorify a bunch of half famous random people be duplicitous to each other as if they are killing each other. This is what we choose to spend time doing and endorsing. Weird.

Well it’s obvious you’re not a proper fan, and you don’t really understand it.

The contestants aren’t “half famous”, they’re regular people with regular jobs.

Tonight’s episode was quite an emotional watch with each contestant telling the others a bit more about their personal lives and how they would spend their winnings if they won. They were all very respectful and admiring of each other. A great bunch of people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

But I suppose you didn’t really pick up on that. Did you?

… and then we all watch and empathise, and pay and congratulate the most duplicitous one at the end? That’s right isn’t it?

A lot of these reality programmes - however dubious the premise - show people largely cooperating and working through differences. And they’re a fabulous and glamourous distraction for the working masses who need respite from shit lives and what’s going on in the world.

Do you not play any games OP?

Probably for the best.

You may be shooketh!

Silverbirchleaf · 17/01/2026 01:43

I grew up with ‘Tom and Jerry’, and not grown up to be a failed murderer.

Also, young adult dc and I don’t watch it together, but chat about it, so it’s actually having posittive results.

It is a game, played by adults and watched by adults. If your children are too young to understand the concept, them be the adult and don't let them watch it.

CalmShaker · 17/01/2026 04:44

Not sure about The Traitors as I've never watched it but there WAS a show that I'm so glad is now off-air and hopefully will never come back as it showed humanity at its worst:
Goldenballs

letstrythatagain · 17/01/2026 04:48

I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say it's a negative influence on society but I can see what you mean. Everyone kept telling me to watch it so I did at the start of this series. I must admit to being gripped when I was watching but it's an uneasy feeling that you're just watching a group of adults lie and manipulate each other to win money. There are some clever people in there though.

We've been away this past week so I've missed it and not sure I'm too bothered about catching up.

Rounded perspective? I blame these shows specifically for teaching people how to (badly) act out emotions such as grief (as evidenced as far back as the artificial ad OTT public reaction to the death of Princess - we were not, prior to that, a nation of “sackcloth & ashes” style grieving), anger and intolerance (as in OTT arguments picked up on by most people in their formative years and leading to a decline in reasoned argument and creeping “cancellation” and denigration of what people say in an effort to be right, instead of balanced logical argument, as well as a general acceptance that in most communities, there must be at least three murders that have taken place annually, as if that is normal!
That it has taken a well-known game (Werewolf), which is based on role play designed for the players to act against type, for you to find your outrage, is astonishing!

No, I think you are completely wrong (or do I?).

I have absolutely no direct knowledge of Traitors as I have never watched it (or have I?) and all I know is from a child at a Christmas party trying to organise a game of it after winking murder but I couldn't understand what was going on. And recently in year 6 DC apparently had a Traitors session of Maths. They have autism and were being truthful about something apparently but weren't believed for some reason and also got very confused about one of their friends saying something dramatic but untrue. It all sounded as if it made more sense than their maths lessons sometimes do. I say that as a mathematician (or do I?).

Anyway the reason I say you are categorically wrong is because of AI (which I also don't use) the internet (which I do) and an extremely painful separation and divorce.

It is a good thing for everyone to realise that they can be deceived by apparently good, nice, convincing people. Even people who make serious promises might deliberate lie and intend you harm. But most people are trustworthy. People will be judged by skin colour, its a fact (wasn't there sone news story about non white contestants being voted out first? - apologies if I have this mixed up with Strictly Baking).

So that is my uninformed and strong opinion. Many thanks for an enjoyable opportunity to procrastinate before piling into an extremely busy day (or am I?).

Edited for typo (or not?)

TheSuperbOwl · 17/01/2026 06:30

Don't be so bloody daft.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 17/01/2026 06:52

It is just a long game of wink murder. The extent of the lying is someone saying 'it wasn't me'. Murdering is like saying 'you're out!'. The object of the game is to find the traitors, so if you do, you have won. We applaud the faithful ones, who are not lying. Most people are rubbish at working out who is lying though, so sometimes we congratulate the traitors instead. They are all pretty respectful, and know they are playing a game. It isn't like politics, where some people have power but insist all along they are only doing good and won't keep all the money. Everyone in this game knows it is a game. Not morally worse than Cluedo as a game. Not morally worse than Eastenders or Gladiators as TV, not morally worse than a typical workplace for power games and deceit.
They are not semi famous either. Just people.

Zanatdy · 17/01/2026 06:53

Oh come on, it’s a game. We all love it and watch together which is nice.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 17/01/2026 06:57

What about the duplicitous Masked Singer? Surely if the Traitors goes, we can't have mysterious people singing behind masks.
