Traitors is a negative influence on society

The TV show Traitors is an example of society breaking down not just a bit of fun entertainment. It glorifies and rewards deceitful behaviour. I can’t actually believe so many people watch it and encourage their kids to watch it as if it is a good thing.

I played Monopoly at Christmas. I've now demolished my house and I'm building a hotel.

@blackcat and @HighLadyofTheNightCourt

I understand how the show works. I have watched every season.

You are not understanding what I am saying. Which is that many do not believe traitors deserve to win because they are knowingly dishonest.

You can literally see the comment below yours.

My point is the traitor behaviour is not much different in final effect to the faithful. The traitors do it knowingly because they can see the whole game. The faithful do it blindly and naively with the best of intentions but the results the same - the evict ‘innocent’ people. See even I am doing it. It is fascinating and I am not sure you get what I am saying.

You worded your original post in a way that suggested you thought the traitors were excluded from winning the money.

As for all other stuff, well yeah. That’s the game. It’s two teams competing against each other and they’ve been purposely pitched as a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ team. That’s where the entertainment value lies. But they’re all competing for the same thing.

starryeyess · 17/01/2026 11:17

We all absolutely love it in our house.

Maybe we're bad people.

I have reread and I think it’s quite clear to anyone who understands the game. Glad you understand what I was trying to say now 😊

ChubbyPuffling · 17/01/2026 11:19

We watch it to see how people who want to be on TV can be made to do batshit crazy crap for the chance of a bit of cash and 15 min fame.

Here... sit in a box... then answer a question... back in the box...

I understand the game but your post was poorly worded. But hey, that happens 🤷🏼‍♀️

Golden Balls has been mentioned a few times. I didn't watch the actual programme when it was on but I have seen clips of one particular final a few times and it's brilliant.

Terrible parents!! 😂😂

There 32 and 31, should I surrender them to SS?

Most definitely. It’s the only option.
Mine is only 11 and does have particular interest in military history and world politics but maybe there’s time to turn it around?

On the app and didn't realise how many unread post were left on the thread. Didn't see that this had already been posted. Sorry!

If anything, The Traitors is problematic because it celebrates idiocy, hunches, acting without evidence and groupthink. The murder stuff is merely cartoony and silly.

I find it hard to watch it because the legit answer to the question "Who do you think is a Traitor?" is almost always "It's impossible to say because there is nothing they have been asked to do that will reveal who they are."

Until the last rounds, if you're a Traitor, you just have to lie well when you talk about whether you're a Traitor or not. There are really no other "strategies" and it is idiotic to pretend there are.

@MasterBeth

But does 'The Traitors' actively celebrate those things or simply publically highlight them?

There's a difference between celebrating something and simply showing it. I would argue that The Traitors does the latter.

AwfullyGood · 17/01/2026 11:35

OMG...you are so right!

It's just like how the board game operayion has led to so much illegal organ removal!

You might want to strap on a crash helmet if you ever stray onto Love Island, OP. 💐

I’ve been watching it and unreservedly enjoying it after being introduced to the celebrity version. However last nights dinner party revelations left me feeling uncomfortable - too much of a collusion of reality and game. And I found myself wondering how true their stories were - no doubt we’ll eventually find out. Have previous series used this tactic ?

I don't think the first one did, but S3 definitely had the same set-up.

I'm assuming everything they spoke about their real lives was true. Faraaz, for example, repeated what the audience had already heard from him.

The Celebrity series had a dinner party, which I thought was when they'd all talk about their chosen charities instead, but they didn't (which I'd have been quite miffed about if I'd been one of the charities 🙃). Instead the Hapless Traitor spent the entire time attempting to mark someone for murder...

WasThatACorner · 17/01/2026 12:31

@Listenup99 shall we ban chess as well? That can be a bloodbath with (at times) actual treason!

silverwrath · 17/01/2026 12:38

I've never watched Traitors.

But couldn't you say something similar about Would I Lie To You?

NeedATreat · 17/01/2026 12:47

I’d say it’s far more problematic to be unable to differentiate between a game and real life. If adults and children are watching. TV and unable to discern where deceitful behaviour capitalising on misplaced trust (Monopoly, anyone?!) is harmless and appropriate, and where integrity, honesty, and the collective good are more important, then Claudia Winkleman and her crew are the least of their worries.

And if you think Traitors is bad, allow me to introduce you to 90% of the literary canon…

dottieautie · 17/01/2026 13:25

As an autistic person who is also a people watcher rather than social participant I find it fascinating. Watching the two faced behaviours has been really validating for me because it confirms what I’ve felt all my life about people when I have tried to interact socially with groups. Obviously the tv show is highly concentrated but it reveals human behaviour and clamour for popularity and power to manipulate others.

As a social experiment it’s fascinating. These behaviours have always existed among groups of people and for so long by everyone denied it. To someone like me who is a pattern spotter it was like gaslighting being told so and so is lovely you’re wrong when you’re fairly sure you’re not. This just gamifies the whole
scenario and lays it bare for us all to consume.

Will it glorify the behaviour? no! It’s already human nature.

Enjoying the replies so far 😆 knew this would go down well. As I say I do believe it irl but know many don’t agree! I also find rhat show where people marry each other randomly and love island are also truly negative societal trends.

if you met me irl you’d have no idea im this radical btw 😎

Absolutely agree about the love island etc shite. I don't understand the draw of watching people eat the face off someone they don't know in front of the world. Never watched it but seen the adverts.
Don't have any interest in The Traitors and never seen it.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 17/01/2026 14:07

Totally right op, I learnt this the hard way, I've got 1 child who was a cluedo fan slaughtering friends with lead piping in our conservatory and another leaving the house every night dressed in black lycra pretending he is a bat..... oh wait, no, because those are pretend, and people know the difference between games, stories and reality.

Listenup99 · 17/01/2026 01:16

… and then we all watch and empathise, and pay and congratulate the most duplicitous one at the end? That’s right isn’t it?

We don't 'congratulate' the most duplicitous one - we admire the winner, who hasn't necessarily been deceitful at all. They are playing a game and it's fun. You are taking it far too seriously.

Emmz1510 · 17/01/2026 14:40

If you don’t like this sort of TV or just aren’t a fan of this show that’s perfectly fine. It’s not my bag either. But it’s a bit of a stretch to say it’s damaging to society. Most of the people watching it are responsible adults who aren’t likely to have their view of the truth swayed by a TV show! And by the time kids are old enough to even understand and be entertained by this show their understanding of truth vs lies should be pretty much set.

talktalk66 · 17/01/2026 15:05

It's a game though and people usually can tell the difference between a game and and reality. Take Monopoly for example, it's one the of nation's favourite board games and has been for decades. It's also a game of deceit, taking people's property and money and leaving them with nothing. doesn't mean we will do this to people in real life. Lots of games have similar themes. What about Who Dares Wins? that's savage!
